Waubay coasts into win

Waubay jumped out to a big lead and coasted to a 73-23 non-conference win over Aberdeen Christian Tuesday at the Civic Arena.

Aberdeen Christian assistant coach Hannah Wickard said Waubay's post play was a role in the victory for the Dragons.

"Their post play was really effective," Wickard said. "We haven't seen a team that played great 'back-to-the-basket'; they were very traditional with good post play."

The Dragons had a balanced scoring attack, led by Kayla Breske, Monica Larson and Jenna Larson with 14 points each. Breske also grabbed seven rebounds.

Wickard said Christian ran its offense well in the first half, had trouble finding the basket.

"Our offense worked well, but we didn't put the ball in the basket," she said. "We were able to work the ball inside and got some our post players involved. They worked really hard for us."

Tabitha Schrenk led the Knights with nine points and Ellie Becker hauled down 10 rebounds.

Waubay will travel to Revillo to face Grant-Deuel on Friday while the Knights are back in action again Thursday against Ipswich at the Civic Arena. Game times are 6:30 p.m. for the girls and 8 p.m. for the boys. Wickard said lessons learned from the Waubay game will hopefully carry over to Thursday, such as playing against a pressure defense and playing better on the offensive end.

"We haven't played against a press for a couple of weeks, so we will be able to do better," Wickard said. "We will take the feeling of what effective offense feels like and be able to do it (Thursday)."

Pierre Governors continue winning streak

PIERRE - Zach Hanson's dominance was the theme of the night Tuesday in Pierre as the Governors collected their fourth consecutive victory by beating Aberdeen Central.

Hanson, whose mother Jane (Konz) Hanson played basketball at Northern State, was unstoppable in Tuesday's contest, as the soon-to-be Creighton Bluejay led the Governors to a 72-59 victory against their Eastern South Dakota Conference rival.

After committing a loose-ball foul in the game's first possession, Hanson more than made up for it with 26 points and nine rebounds as the Governors went to their big man early and often.

"Establishing Zach inside was our main focus. It was a little scary early because Zach picked up an early foul. We stayed focused on feeding him the ball and he played within himself," Governors coach Terry Becker said.

Hanson scored the Governors first six points in the contest, sparking an 11-2 run to begin the game.

"Zach Hanson was just a beast in the first half," said Aberdeen boys' coach Brent Norberg. "He just ate us up. We said going in, 'We're going to double him and make somebody else beat us.' They're a very good team. We just were up against it tonight."

The paint wasn't the only setting where Hanson thrived.

Aberdeen Central sent multiple defenders who weren't afraid to foul Hanson who made the unplanned hack-a-Zach strategy work in Pierre's favor, going a perfect 12 of 12 from the charity stripe in the win.

"Zach's free-throw shooting was good. He made his first four free throws before he got his first field goal. That got him into a rhythm and he was able to continue making them," Becker said.

The Golden Eagles remained within striking distance after a quarter thanks to a three-pointer by Jacob Goehring in the closing seconds of the first quarter to keep the Golden Eagles within seven.

Unfortunately, for Aberdeen Central, the momentum from the final shot of the first quarter didn't carry over. Erin Severyn began the second stanza with a three-pointer of his own, part of a night in which some of Pierre's lesser-known players gave good contributions.

Erin Severyn, Carson Eisenbeisz, Garrett Pochop, Cooper Walton and others gave Pierre quality minutes as the Governors' preseason weakness of depth is now developing into strength.

Aberdeen's Brady Mohr drained a three-pointer in the second quarter but Pierre featured dunks from Lane Severyn and Hanson to close out the half and give the Governors a 42-20 lead with Hanson scoring 21 points in the half.

"They're really tough to guard," said Norberg about Pierre. "It was just tough to slow them down. They had 42 points at halftime. We just aren't able to score at that rate."

To the Golden Eagles' credit, they didn't surrender in the second half.

Mohr hit a pair of triples and Aaron Lorenz hit two more three-pointers in the third quarter to cut the lead to 15 but the Governors had an answer for every Aberdeen Central run.

"We were able to stave off those runs. We had people step up a little bit when we needed to stop a run," Becker said. "We were able to get timely baskets to keep that cushion for us and that's important if you want to be a good team."

The Governors put the kibosh to a comeback in the fourth quarter as Hanson scored the first five points of the quarter, including an old-fashioned three-point play. The Governors went on to win and push their record to 6-4. Aberdeen Central fell to 3-9 in the loss.

Lorenz led the way for the Golden Eagles with 16 points while Mohr added 10. The Golden Eagles will host Sturgis on Friday at Golden Eagles Arena.

"I thought we physically tried to step up our game to deal with what was going on out there," said Norberg. "Defensively, we have to get a whole lot better."

Knights slay Dragons with early lead

Aberdeen Christian started off a busy week on the positive note Tuesday night.

The Knights, who play four games in a seven-day stretch, jumped out to an early lead and rolled past Waubay 78-49 in a non-conference boys' basketball game at the Aberdeen Civic Arena.

"This is going to be a hard week for us," said Christian coach Dave Palmer. "We had been talking about that coming into this game, we want to set the tone for the week."

The Knights bolted out to an early double-digit lead and were in control after that.

A big factor in the contest was that Christian grabbed 18 more rebounds than the Dragons, led by Tanner Droog with 11.

"We saw zone most of the game," Palmer noted. "We tried to change our style a little bit, getting a better shot and getting reversals. We did get a lot of offensive rebounds. A lot of that had to do with Tanner's play on the backside."

Droog also contributed 18 points, five steals and four assists.

"Tanner does that, but you don't always see it in the points end of it," Palmer said. "He plays a really solid floor game."

Job Niewenhuis added 17 points, Sam Palmer 16 and Matt Rohrbach 14 for Christian.

"Real balanced scoring for us," Coach Palmer pointed out. "That's what we're looking for."

Shay Swanson topped Waubay with 13 points and seven rebounds. Preston Barse followed with 10, Mason Berger contributed eight and Grant Kurkowski finished with seven.

Christian improved to 7-3 with the victory. The Knights have three more games between now and Monday, the first of which takes place Thursday when Christian hosts Ipswich at 8 p.m. at the Civic Arena as part of a boys-girls doubleheader.

"That should be a fun night," Palmer said. "They're a team that matches up really well with us."

Eagles play to their strengths

This game boiled down to Pierre's outside shooting against Aberdeen Central's inside strength.

The visiting Governors shot 63 percent from the three-point area in the first half to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room. In the second half, that percentage dwindled to 17 percent and the home Golden Eagles rallied for a 56-41 win on Tuesday in girls' high school basketball. The Governors connected on just 2 of 12 three-pointers in the second half of an Eastern South Dakota Conference game played at Golden Eagles Arena. Aberdeen Central, ranked number two in Class AA this week, remained undefeated at 12-0 overall and 9-0 in the ESD. Pierre dropped to 5-5 and 4-3 ESD.

"Pierre played really well offensively," said Aberdeen girls' coach Dawn Seiler. "They moved the ball and they have a lot of kids who can score. It stretches the defense and you end up chasing and you're always a little bit behind. Give Pierre a lot of credit because they knocked down big shots. They cooled off a little bit by the end of the third quarter."

Pierre's last lead of the game came at 36-35 in the closing minutes of the third quarter on a field goal and two free throws by Kristi Livermont.

A field goal by Aberdeen's Sara Niederbaumer and a driving basket by Brynn Flakus put the Golden Eagles in the lead at 39-36 to end the third quarter.

"They swung the ball and we seemed out of place and we weren't always where we needed to be defensively," said Aberdeen senior point guard Kelsey Hannigan. "We started adjusting and moving our feet more and keeping up with the ball."

Two free throws by Hannigan kept Aberdeen in the lead at 45-39 with six minutes left in the game. Pierre responded with a field goal by Stevi Claussen to pull within four points at 45-41 with 5 minutes remaining.

The shots stopped falling completely for Pierre, which would not score again in the game. The Governors connected on just 14 points in the second half.

"I thought we got great shots the first half," said Pierre coach Lisa Bahe. "The shots were dropping. The second half, those shots just didn't fall for us. We started to press a little bit and do things to make something happen. We got a little rattled because the shots weren't falling, but our kids played extremely hard."

An old fashioned three-point play (field goal and free throw) and a regular field goal by Flakus boosted the Aberdeen lead to 50-41 at the four minute mark. Both teams had flurries of missed shots and turnovers in the closing minutes.

"Aberdeen is a great team. They play an inside-outside game. They can attack from the inside and shoot from the perimeter. They have a lot of tools. Our kids played with great intensity. We battled hard. It was a fun game to coach and hopefully to watch," said Bahe.

Pierre was led by Livermont with 16 points, and Taylor Hyde and Claussen with seven each.

Four Aberdeen Central player reached double figures including Samantha Knecht and Flakus with 13 points each, Sara Niederbaumer with 12 and Hannigan with 10. Knecht added eight rebounds.

"I'm not much of a scorer, but if it's there, I'll take it," said Hannigan who finished with five assists. "It was just going in for me tonight (Tuesday). I love the feeling of being the player that gets the good pass. I don't need to score."

On the defensive end, Seiler pointed to the play of Leah Beringer.

"Leah had the best defensive game she's played all year and I'm happy for her," said Seiler. "This was a good game for us. You have to figure out how to win games. You have to make adjustments and these are the kind of games you have to grow from. Nothing came easy tonight."

Aberdeen Central and Pierre share a common opponent for their next games. Aberdeen will play at Sturgis on Friday and Pierre will follow at Sturgis on Saturday.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Haley Froelich, Lemmon, Basketball

It has been happy trails so far this season for Haley Froelich and the Lemmon Cowgirls basketball squad.

The 5-9 senior forward helped Lemmon capture the Little Moreau Conference Tournament title last week. Froelich tossed in 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in the opening-round win over Bison, and followed that with an 18-point, 11-rebound effort against Faith. Lemmon then defeated Timber Lake in the championship game, behind 23 points from Froelich. For her efforts, she is the American News Athlete of the Week.

The championship game with the Panthers was close, and a solid second half helped the Cowgirls to a win and a 13-0 record this year.

"We came out in the third quarter and had a bunch of transition points, so we could tell the momentum was in our favor and they were going slowly downhill," Froelich said.

Froelich has played in four LMC tournaments, with this being her third championship. Lemmon also won it during her freshman and sophomore seasons. A young, talented team is working hard to attain its goals this season, Froelich said.

"We have a really young team with a lot of talent," Froelich said. "If (someone) gets down, someone else will step up right away. We always have more weapons ready to step up."

An ACL injury last season caused Froelich to miss much of last season and she has worked on her skills plus many intangibles this season. Froelich averages 20 points per game for Lemmon, while shooting 55 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free throw line. She also averages five rebounds, four assists and four steals per contest.

Lemmon coach Sara Gebhart said coming back strong both mentally and physically from her injury is part of what makes Froelich a great player.

"She is a great leader. She is positive with the rest of the team from the eighth-graders on up," Gebhart said. "If she is missing a few more shots than normal, she does not get down and let the rest of her game suffer nor her leadership of the team."

Along with leadership, Froelich also possesses good court vision, shooting and defensive abilities as well.

"Haley gets down the court well to take on any fast-break opportunities that may come and she also sees the court well, too," Gebhart said. "She can shoot from anywhere on the court, from the three-point line to a post move on the inside. Haley usually guards the best players from the other team because of her defensive abilities."

Froelich has started on varsity since her sophomore year and saw significant minutes as a freshman, as well. She credits former coaches with shaping her game, including her AAU coach, Donovan DeBoer, who gave her some advice to follow.

"He told me it doesn't matter how good you played one game, you still have to get better," Froelich said. "Every time I feel lazy, that motivates me to get better and go to the gym."

Northwestern team treated to Target Center trip

Saturday will be a day that the Northwestern girls' basketball team won't soon forget.

The squad found itself center stage during the Minnesota Timberwolves-Houston Rockets professional basketball game at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Northwestern coach Jason Sparling used to coach in Wisconsin and took his squads to play games at the Target Center during the season. He used his contacts to arrange for a special trip for his Northwestern team.

"We're trying to create some excitement," Sparling said.

The girls boarded a charter bus on Saturday morning and went straight to the Target Center, where they watched a high school girls' game. They then had lunch and watched a high school boys' game before the real excitement started.

The Wildcats were allowed to practice for 25 minutes on the Target Center floor.

"Everybody made a basket," Sparling said.

The members of the team then watched the Timberwolves shoot around and were able to get autographs and pictures with some of the Wolves.

While the practice, photos and signatures were a bit of a surprise, what happened next was not.

Sparling had arranged for the team to be on the floor for the National Anthem standing next to the Wolves. However, a group of small children wanted to stand next to the home team, so Northwestern's girls obliged and exchanged their spots for the opposite end in front of the Rockets.

"Our girls were happy to be there and honored to be on the court," Sparling said.

He said some of his players are fans of Houston star James Harden.

"After the National Anthem, Harden came by and was fist-bumping the girls," Sparling said.

Once the game ended, the girls hopped on the bus and headed home. Sparling said his players were so pumped they sang for three hours straight on the way home.

The exciting part for Northwestern fans is that Sparling is hoping that last weekend's trip is just the tip of the iceberg.

"We're working on some fun stuff with the Minnesota Lynx to get involved with our girls to build excitement in our program," Sparling said.

He said Lynx players such as Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore are the type of individuals worth emulating.

"They are role models. They seem to be pretty clean cut," Sparling said. "That's the positive influence that we want with our program."

Sparling, who is in his first year of coaching the Wildcats, said his assistant coach Denise Clemens is also a role model for the girls.

"She is so smart with the game," he said. "I'm very lucky to have her. She is so positive for the girls."

Sparling said plans are in the works to possibly have Northwestern play a game at the Target Center, perhaps as early as next season.

Stay tuned, the fun might just be getting started.

Games of the week: Aberdeen Roncalli, Warner teams to face off Saturday

$

There will not be a conference championship at stake or a postseason berth on the line, but the atmosphere still promises to be special when Aberdeen Roncalli and Warner square off in a girls' and boys' basketball doubleheader Saturday night.

The twinbill at the Aberdeen Civic Arena will be this week's American News Games of the Week. The girls will play at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys around 8 p.m.

"There's a lot of factors involved," said Roncalli boys' coach Todd Neuendorf of why the games have a bit of added meaning.

One reason is that Neuendorf's two assistants have strong ties to Warner. Kendall Hoellein is a Warner alum, and Derek Hoellein's brother currently attends school there. Plus, many of the players know each other well.

"A lot of Warner kids come and play with us in the summer in our Summer League," Neuendorf said.

The proximity of the two sides certainly lends itself to many story lines as well.

"Anytime you have two schools that are 9 miles apart, there's going to be common ties," said Warner boys' coach Matt Mackner. "I think that's why it draws so much interest."

There are also interesting ties in the girls' game. Warner coach Stew Bohle was once part of the Roncalli coaching staff and his daughter, Emily, currently plays for the Cavaliers.

Of course, the drama on the court should be entertaining as well.

"Last year was a great ball game," Bohle recalled.

The girls' game will match Warner's size against Roncalli's quickness.

"We play completely different styles," said Roncalli girls' coach Derek Larson. "Who does the better job in their own game is who is going to win."

Warner has four girls at least 6-feet tall, but will have to contend with Roncalli's non-stop pressure defense.

"Sometimes you look around and you think, 'Are there seven out there?' They just wear you down," Bohle said. "They keep coming at you and coming at you."

Larson is well aware that the Monarchs blitzed the competition on their way to the State B volleyball championship last falls and have lost just one game so far this basketball season.

"With the athletes that they have and them running the table in volleyball and having a successful basketball season so far, it even makes it more intense than it normally is," Larson said.

The boys' game will also be an intriguing matchup.

Much like the girls' contest, Roncalli will try to force problems with a full-court pressure defense, while Warner will try to take advantage of its size, namely 6-foot-4 brothers Jarrod and Derrek Tuszka.

"I think we're going to have our hands completely full," Neuendorf said. "They have two big athletic kids that are going to be a handful to guard."

Mackner understands that his team will be in the pressure cooker against the Cavaliers, but also knows that it will benefit his squad in the long run.

"That's one thing that they're known for. They're going to start guarding you when you get off the bus," Mackner said. "It's a great growing opportunity for our team."

COLUMN : Wolves shine in fine arts as well as sports

OK, this is not a complete list.

But here is my memories of great moments in Northern State music history:

Oct. 31, 2002: The NSU band played for President George W. Bush at the Barnett Center. Bush was in Aberdeen for a campaign stop for U.S. Senate Republican candidate John Thune.

Jan. 20, 2005: The Northern State University Marching Wolves marched in the presidential inaugural parade for President George W. Bush in Washington, D.C.

Nov. 24, 2006: The Northern State University Marching Wolves is the only college band to perform in the Waikiki Holiday Parade in Hawaii. The parade commemorated the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

June 2, 2008: The Dominant 7, a popular Northern State University instrumental group, entertained the Aberdeen crowd before former President Bill Clinton spoke on campus. Then-NSU President Patrick Schloss even took a turn at playing the maracas. Clinton was in Aberdeen (and Webster) during a campaign stop for his wife, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The Dominant 7 ended its performance with the NSU fight song.

April 29, 2012: The Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony performed with the rock band Kansas at the Johnson Fine Arts Center in Aberdeen. One of the highlights of the night was when NSU track and field star and member of the NSU string section Lindsey Fluharty stepped forward to do a violin solo with Kansas violinist David Ragsdale on "Dust in the Wind." It was awesome.

Jan. 21, 2013: The Northern State University Marching Wolves marched in the presidential inaugural parade for President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

Whenever: NSU senior basketball player Yvonne Freese sings the national anthem.

Like I said, an incomplete list to be sure. But nonetheless, impressive.

Wrestlers and wrestling mats will cover Golden Eagles Arena this weekend as Aberdeen Central hosts a big high school meet on Saturday and a youth wrestling tournament on Sunday.

The annual Lee Wolf Invitational will showcase several of the top high school teams in South Dakota and North Dakota beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Action in the youth wrestling tourney on Sunday begins at noon. In addition, Aberdeen Roncalli will also wrestle Sioux Falls O'Gorman and Warner/Northwestern on Friday in the cafetorium at Roncalli.

West Fargo (N.D.), a rated team in North Dakota, will return to the Lee Wolf Invite as the two-time defending champions. The Packers won last year's tournament by 76 points over Huron in second. Webster and Watertown filled out the top four. Aberdeen Central was sixth last season and Aberdeen Roncalli finished 12th.

Participating teams are expected to be Central, Roncalli, Canton, Chamberlain, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree, Huron, Potter County, Ipswich, Milbank, Mobridge-Pollock, Redfield-Doland, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, Watertown, Webster, West Fargo and Winner. In this week's South Dakota wrestling poll, Huron is ranked third and Central holds down sixth in Class A. Ranked Class B teams include Webster at number two.

Wrestlers to watch are: Logan Richie of Webster (No. 3 at 106 pounds, Class B), Brady Burghardt of Watertown (No. 1 at 113 pounds, Class A), Chet Glanzer of Huron (No. 1 at 126, Class A) and Nolan Richie of Webster (No. 2 at 126, Class B), Sean Bice of Winner (No. 2 at 132, Class B), Griffin Hieb of Aberdeen Central (No. 1 at 138, Class A) and Spencer Rausch of Webster (No. 2 at 138, Class B), Alex Davies of Canton (No. 1 at 145), John Frisco of Aberdeen Central (No. 2 at 152), Regan Francom of Huron (No. 1 at 160, Class A) and Tyson Mitzel of Aberdeen Roncalli (No. 1 at 160, Class B), Kase Jacobs of Canton (No. 1 at 182. Class B), Chad Sjurson of Webster (No. 3 at 195, Class B), and Tanner Broughton of Canton (No. 3 at 220, Class B).

The Aberdeen Central wrestling team is fresh from a team win at the West Central Tournament last Saturday. The Golden Eagles edged Huron for the title.

"We're pretty excited," said Central coach Rocky Burkett. "Practices have been pretty positive. We're getting more confidence with what we can do. We want to go out there and keep improving each week. Hopefully, we'll improve on our performance last week and we can finish pretty high at the Lee Wolf."

Burkett pointed to West Fargo, Webster, Canton and Huron as some of the better teams.

"Last week, we had some kids that hadn't had a lot of success do really well," said Burkett. "We want those guys to keep improving, and as a team, we want to get better by state tournament time."

 Cunningham to be honored

Longtime Faulkton coach, athletic director and teacher Garry Cunningham will be honored on Feb. 1 during a basketball doubleheader between Faulkton and Aberdeen Christian. Faulkton is officially naming its renovated sports facility the Garry Cunningham Sports Complex.

Craig Cassens, who took over the athletic director position when Cunningham stepped down eight years ago, said when Cunningham's name came up, it was unanimous choice.

"There was nobody on that committee of eight people that even blinked, that thought, 'No, we shouldn't do that'," Cassens said.

Cunningham, who retired from teaching six years ago, will be honored between the varsity games next week and then the field will have a sign with his name on it stretched the entire length of the press box when the weather allows.

Cassens said Cunningham, who has been fighting cancer, has a grandson who now plays on the Faulkton team and is a regular at sporting events. Cassens is hoping to see a large turnout to help honor a man who has meant so much to Faulkton athletics.

"We'd like people to come," Cassens said. "We're hoping to have a pretty good crowd."

State basketball tournaments have new start times

Fans will notice a big change when the state basketball tournaments take place next month.

For the first time, both the boys' and girls' state tourneys will start sessions at noon and 6 p.m. all three days. In the past, only Saturday's sessions had those start times with the first two days beginning at 1 and 7 p.m.

"We kept seeing families with little kids getting up in the middle of ball games and leaving because it was too late for them," explained Jo Auch, assistant executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

Auch said that while the change may take a bit of getting used to, she believes that all involved - from the fans to the players to the media - will appreciate the games ending an hour earlier than in the past.

"I don't think there will be much backlash," Auch said. "I think people will really enjoy the change."

 Wrestling with atmosphere

While the location may be foreign for some, Aberdeen Roncalli figures to be in its element when the Cavaliers host two duals in the school Cafetorium on Friday night.

Because of a basketball game in Roncalli Gym, the wrestling duals between Warner-Northwestern and Sioux Falls O'Gorman, and Roncalli and SFO will take place right next door.

"For us it's normal, because that's where we practice," said Roncalli coach Justin Briese. "For us, it's not too awkward of an environment."

While the area is used as a cafeteria, it also includes a stage so it is known as the Cafetorium, but the wrestlers have a different name for it.

"We call it the Wrestletorium," Briese said. "That's our home; our home away from home."

 Basketball player tops 1,000

It was a tournament to remember for a Rosholt girls' basketball player.

Rosholt not only won the third-place game in the Eastern Coteau Conference Tournament game on Saturday, but senior Mackenzie Eggers scored the 1,000th point of her career. Rosholt beat Florence-Henry 62-56 in the third-place game hosted by Great Plains Lutheran in Watertown. Eggers scored 11 points in the game.

On Monday, Eggers added 19 points to her career totals in a 73-59 Rosholt win over Langford Area. Rosholt improved to 9-3 overall.

The Raiders return to action on Friday playing Florence-Henry at Florence.

 Girls' basketball matchups

The recent girls' basketball game between Warner and Summit, both undefeated at the time, was just the beginning of several interesting contests on the horizon in the area.

Summit, ranked first in Class B, beat Warner, ranked second, 52-41 on Monday. Summit remained undefeated at 12-0 and Warner lost for the first time this season in either volleyball or basketball for a 12-1 basketball mark.

Warner will play Aberdeen Roncalli, which is 8-2 before game tonight against Sisseton, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. Roncalli has been receiving votes in the Class A poll. The Aberdeen Roncalli and Warner boys' basketball teams will follow at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Summit girls continue to put their undefeated record on the line by playing Fulda (Minn.) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dakota State Fieldhouse in Madison.

On Monday, the Sully Buttes girls will host Timber Lake in Onida. Sully Buttes is coached by Mark Senftner who previously coached at Timber Lake. Senftner led the Timber Lake girls to three state tournament appearances. Sully Buttes has played in seven state tournaments since 2004.

The Aberdeen Civic Arena will serve as the site for the Summit girls versus Herreid-Selby Area, which is ranked third in Class B. The contest will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be followed by the Summit and Herreid-Selby Area boys game at 8 p.m.

FOOTBALL: West Central player says yes to NSU

Mitchell Brockhaus has verbally committed to the Northern State football team.

Brockhaus is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound all-state defensive end from West Central. He racked up 36 tackles -- 13 for loss -- and seven sacks this past season for the Trojans. Brockhaus also batted down four passes. He was a three-year starter, a two-time all-conference selection and a two-time all-stater for West Central. In his three years as a starter, he had 36 tackles for loss, 17 sacks and four blocked punts for the Trojans. He also started at tight end the past two seasons.

"He is built like the guys that play on Sundays with his height and his reach," West Central coach Kent Mueller said. "He has got good feet and really good speed for a big kid."

Brockhaus, who is also an outstanding basketball player, did all the punting and kicking the last three years for the Trojans, said Mueller. Verbal commitments are not binding until prospects sign their national letters of intent on Feb. 6.

High school wrestling: Roncalli squad defeated by numbers

BRITTON -- While Aberdeen Roncalli dropped a pair of Northeast Conference wrestling duals, the Cavaliers held their own Thursday night.

Milbank won all three of its duals and Britton-Hecla/Langford won twice on the night.

Roncalli lost to Milbank 54-22 and to Britton-Hecla/Langford 39-30, but those numbers were a bit deceiving.

"We had seven contested matches (against Milbank) and we won five of the seven," said Roncalli coach Justin Briese. "We may lose the team score, but as we look at it, we can only control what we can control."

The Cavaliers got a big boost from Brayden Hilton who scored a pin at 152 pounds. Zach Sumner also added a pin and Tyson Mitzel, Riley Johnsen and Matt Schlosser won by decision.

Mitzel, who is undefeated, scored a 9-1 win over Spencer Folk at 160 in a marquee match. Mitzel is rated number one in Class B while Folk is rated third in Class A.

Roncalli also wrestled solid against Britton-Hecla/Langford, winning two of five contested matches. One of the losses was a double overtime setback.

Including in the wins was the first-ever varsity victory for Roncalli seventh-grader Austin Cihak at 106.

"He came out and wrestled hard," Briese noted. "It was good for him to get a good start."

The two duals kicked off a wild weekend for the Cavaliers, who will wrestle three days in a row. Roncalli hosts Sioux Falls O'Gorman tonight. That match will follow the SFO vs. Warner-Northwestern match at 6 p.m. at the Roncalli Cafetorium. The Cavaliers then participate in the Lee Wolf Invitational on Saturday at Golden Eagles Arena.

"We're getting ready to roll," Briese said.

High School Basketball: Roncalli girls shut down Sisseton

SISSETON -- Aberdeen Roncalli put the defensive clamps on Sisseton and Mollee Karst provided more than enough offense Thursday night.

Karst exploded for 13 points in a 16-7 third-quarter surge as the Cavaliers pulled away for a 42-29 Northeast Conference girls' basketball victory. The win keeps Roncalli unbeaten in NEC play.

"Defensively, we played really well tonight," said Roncalli coach Derek Larson.

He said his team's ball pressure made it tough for the hosts to make entry passes into the lane.

"With the guards that we have, it makes it difficult to get passes into the post," Larson said. "Defensively is kind of where we got it done."

Meanwhile, Karst was dominant force on the other end of the floor. Her third-quarter outburst allowed Roncalli to extend an eight-point halftime lead to a 17-point third-quarter cushion. She finished with a game-high 25 points.

"The second half she really played well," Larson said. "She got a lot of stuff going to the rim. She really came up huge for us."

Morgan Gunderson added 10 points for the Cavaliers.

Larson said his team did not shoot the ball particularly well, but gave credit to the Sisseton defense.

"Their help-side defense is really good," Larson said. "We'd drive to the rim and it seemed like they always had somebody there to get a stop."

Morgan Pageler powered Sisseton with nine points and eight rebounds.

Roncalli, 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the NEC, faces Warner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena in a girls-boys doubleheader.

"Warner is one of the tallest teams in the state probably," said Larson, noting the Monarchs have four players at least 6-feet or taller. "We'll have to prepare for their size."
