Central bends record to new heights

The Golden Eagles closed out the home portion of the season by setting a new school scoring record for the fourth time this season and crowning an individual champion in the vault.

The Aberdeen Central gymnastics team finished second at its own home quadrangular meet on Thursday in the auxiliary gym and gymnastics center at the high school. Watertown won the team title with 144.75 points and Aberdeen was second with 136.80. The all-around winner was Krisia Bramer of Watertown with a 37.85. The Arrows had four of the top six performers in the all-around. Huron and Pierre rounded out the competition.

Aberdeen's previous school record high was 136.75 and this score raised the record even higher.

The order of competition worked in favor of the Golden Eagles, with uneven bars followed by balance beam, floor exercise and vault.

"That order has seemed to work well for us in the past," said Aberdeen coach Jennifer Deutsch. "In bars, you either have it or you don't. We're getting stronger on bars, so that was nice to start with."

Tessa Kimbler was Aberdeen's top competitor with an 8.80 score for fourth place on the bars.

On the beam, Taylor Schweitzer turned in a no-fall routine and scored an 8.45 for sixth place.

"It's always nice to get the beam out of the way and not have it last. I was hoping we would stick more beam routines than we did. They fought hard and that's all that you can ask of them. Taylor nailed it for us. She may not be throwing the big tumbling skills, but she has no wobbles. She nails everything. She's been consistent on beam. Alexis (Clark) had one fall and didn't have as many wobbles. We just wanted Larissa (Swanson) to have a great meet," said Deutsch.

Swanson, who is the team's lone senior this season, came through with an 8.90 score on the floor for fourth place.

"Floor and vault are the ones that are fun to wrap up on. On floor, the scores weren't where we wanted them to be. The judge really got us on execution. We need to focus on cleaning up the routines. Larissa had an awesome routine on floor," said Deutsch.

The Golden Eagles soared in the vault winning the top two places. Schweitzer flew long on her first vault but nailed a 9.30 on her second vault for the win. Clark scored 9.20 for second place.

"Taylor sometimes has a fumble on the first one, but immediately knows what to do to correct it," said Deutsch. "She clearly did that by hitting her next vault."

Clark finished third in the all-around with a mark of 34.55 and Swanson was ninth.

The Aberdeen gymnasts do not return to the mats until Feb. 2 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Championships at Huron. The scores from the ESD meet will be used to qualify teams and individuals for the State AA Meet on Feb. 15-16 in Rapid City.

"It was a good meet. We still have issues in each event," said Deutsch. "We'll be working next week on the skills and the mental aspect of the sport. The ESD is an important meet."

Warner gymnast Erin Punt, who works out with the Aberdeen team, placed among the top eight in three events. Punt finished fourth on the beam, fifth on the vault and eighth on the floor. She has already qualified for the State A Meet on Feb. 15-16 in Rapid City.

Ipswich extended its winning streak to four games with an 80-12 victory over Aberdeen Christian Thursday at the Civic Arena.

Ipswich broke out to a 27-5 lead after one period, holding Christian to two points in both the second and fourth quarters. The Tigers improved to 9-4 on the season and are 4-1 in the Lake Region Conference with the victory.

The visitors had 13 players score in the contest, led by a trio with double figures. Shekota Myer topped the Tigers with 18 points, followed by Tara Heinz with 13 and Maci Gauer with a dozen.

Aberdeen Christian assistant coach Hannah Wickard said the Knights had a difficult time scoring against Ipswich.

"We played very good offensively, but just didn't find the basket," Wickard said. "Their defensive pressure was pretty aggressive, so that was a challenge."

The Ipswich pressure forced Christian into 24 turnovers on the night. Wickard said Ipswich was able to convert many of those into points. Tabitha Schrenk led the Christian scoring with six points.

"We didn't play as well today as we did Tuesday," Wickard said, but added the Knights were able to take away a lot of things from the Ipswich game to work on. "We had improvement on offensive patience."

The Tigers will host Britton-Hecla in a non-conference contest on Saturday. Christian returns to action today, in a doubleheader in Miller against Sunshine Bible Academy. Game times are 6:30 p.m. for the girls and 8 p.m. for the boys.

Pins help Cavaliers win against Sioux Falls O¿Gorman

Aberdeen Roncalli's wrestlers recorded five pins against Sioux Falls O'Gorman Friday and it turned out the Cavaliers needed every one of them.

The hosts snuck past the Knights by a score of 43-42, winning on criteria. The match was tied at 42-all, and the first tie-breaker was number of pins, of which Roncalli had more.

Roncalli coach Justin Briese said the 170-pound match, where Riley Johnsen recorded a pin over his opponent, was a key point in the contest.

"I think we realized we had the opportunity to win the dual in the middle of the Riley Johnsen match," Briese said. "I told him we needed to get a pin. He worked really hard and got the pin we needed."

Briese noted the Cavaliers got off to a good start with Austin Cihak's pin at 106 pounds. Brayden Hilton and Tyson Mitzel also pinned their opponents at 152 and 160, respectively, before Johnsen took the mat for his match.

"We got to rolling along with the big guys and got aggressive," Briese said. "They did what they needed to do."

Johnsen's victory added to a good stretch of the season for the sophomore, Briese said.

"Riley has improved and wants to improve each week," Briese said. "He has been wrestling better the last few weeks."

Briese noted that it was fun to wrestle against Roncalli's "sister school" as Catholic Schools Week gets underway.

"It's good to have that kind of camaraderie," he said.

In the other dual, O'Gorman defeated Warner/Northwestern 39-36. Roncalli did not wrestle Warner/Northwestern as the two squads meet on Feb. 5.

The Cavaliers will compete in the Lee Wolf Invitational today at Golden Eagles Arena, which begins at 10 a.m.

BISMARCK, N.D. - A second-period surge from the hosts spelled doom for Aberdeen as the Cougars dropped a 4-1 girls' hockey decision Friday at the Bismarck Tournament.

Bismarck broke open a scoreless game with three second-period goals, two of them coming on power plays. The Cougars cut into the lead with a goal from Hailey Gould early in the third period but could not catch Bismarck.

"We got ourselves short-handed and they capitalized on it," said Aberdeen coach Rob Weinmeister of the second period.

The Cougars did play well for stretches of the game, he said, but Bismarck was aggressive enough to keep the Cougars at bay.

"In the first and second periods, they were out-hustling us and beating us to the puck and (winning) face-offs," Weinmeister said.

The Cougars face a Canadian team today at 1:30 p.m. and will have two more games on Sunday. The event has a round-robin format with five teams participating.

Aberdeen Cougars 0 0 1-1

Including a 19-8 advantage in the third period, the Wings had a 41-32 edge in shots for the game.

Bismarck received goals from Travis Underwood, Cory Chapman and Patrick Moore. The Bobcats and Wings take the ice again tonight at Odde at 7:15 p.m.

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Northern State men's basketball team got defensive to earn a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road win in Minnesota Friday.

The Wolves defeated Minnesota-Crookston 72-53. Collin Pryor led the way for the Wolves with 20 points and six rebounds. Mitch White added eight points, six rebounds and three steals and Skye Warwick chipped in 11 points.

"We talked a lot about our pressure defense this week and making teams earn their points," said NSU coach Paul Sather. "When we did that tonight, we started to put together some nice runs. For us, it starts with rebounding and defense, and when we do those things well, we can be really good. I also loved our execution and ball movement tonight. Plus, our bench (28 points) was really good."

The bad news for NSU was that key reserve Seth Bachand went down with a leg/foot injury. The extent was unknown. "I hate to see Seth go down; we'll just have to wait and see what happens," Sather said.

Northern State will travel to Bemidji to play the Beavers at 6 tonight in another NSIC game.

Golden Eagles 'come out with a W'

Two scoring runs keyed a non-conference win for Aberdeen Central.

A spurt to start the first quarter and another one to begin the third quarter boosted Aberdeen Central to a 55-44 non-conference win over Sturgis on Friday in high school boys' basketball at Golden Eagles Arena. Central never trailed in the game.

The Golden Eagles opened the game with a 10-0 run as Aaron Lorenz and Brady Mohr each drained a three-point field. The Central lead ballooned to 18 points early in the second quarter and the Golden Eagles still led 31-20 at halftime.

"We had two guys with foul trouble (Mohr and Jacob Goehring) and had to sit them right before the half," said Central boys' coach Brent Norberg. "We had a couple guys playing long stretches and weren't quite ready to do that in the last couple of minutes. I told the guys at halftime, 'We have to come out and put a little 5-0 or 7-0 run on them and not let them do the same to us. We want them to look up and be 18 back instead of only down four.' Our guys did that."

Aberdeen outscored Sturgis 13-5 in the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Scoopers would manage just eight points in that stanza.

"Coach told us to keep doing what we're doing and we'd come out with a 'W,' said Aberdeen senior Aaron Lorenz. "He said, 'Make another big run and we'll be fine.' We came out and made a big run and it worked out fine."

Central's biggest lead of the game was 19 points late in the third quarter. The Scoopers outscored the Golden Eagles 16-11 in the fourth quarter but ran out of time.

Norberg had two concerns heading into the game.

"The big kid (Kellen Barden) concerned us. He's left-handed and can put it on the floor," he said. "That's a tough defensive assignment when a kid can face the basket and post up. I thought for the most part the three bigs we ran at him (Carter Paulson, Tyler Block and Brock DeGroot) did a pretty good job overall. I was also worried about other guys being wide open and making shots because of their big guy."

Barden scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds but the Scoopers shot just 8 percent from the three-point area (1 of 13).

Carter Paulson topped Aberdeen with 15 points and nine rebounds. Lorenz chipped in with 13 points as the Golden Eagles shot 42 percent from the field.

"We knew that Sturgis beat a team we lost to (Rapid City Stevens) so we knew it would be a tough fight," said Lorenz. "The defense was doing good for us and shots were going in right away. We got the lead and kept it."

Senior Braden LeGrand missed the game with an elbow injury for Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Central returns to Eastern South Dakota Conference action on Tuesday at Huron.

Roncalli nips Sisseton

It was typical Aberdeen Roncalli vs. Sisseton.

The Cavaliers edged the Redmen 53-50 at Roncalli Gym in a Northeast Conference boys' basketball game Friday. The two NEC rivals have had some memorable games in recent memory and they added another chapter to the rivalry on Friday.

"It was really like a tournament atmosphere here tonight," Roncalli coach Todd Neuendorf said. "It was a fun game and the crowd was excited. Our kids played hard and their kids played hard. It was a lot of fun."

Roncalli had the most fun when it mattered most - in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers outscored the Redmen 22-14 in the final eight minutes to pull out the win.

"We just picked up the pace," Roncalli senior Kory Schwan said about the fourth. "We put more pressure on them. We sat back a little more (earlier in the game). We just picked it up."

Roncalli trailed 36-31 after the third quarter. The Cavaliers opened the final quarter on a 7-0 run in only 54 seconds to take just their second lead of the game at 38-36.

"We let it slip away to start the fourth," Sisseton coach Adam Nelson said. "I thought we controlled the game until that point."

Sisseton tied the game at 38 with 6½ minutes left. The score was tied again at 41 with four minutes left. Zach Andera broke the tie with a three-pointer with under four minutes to play. The Cavaliers then pulled ahead 50-43 with under two minutes remaining.

However, the Redmen did not go away that easy. Wyatt Youngblom scored with a minute left and Bruce Gunderson stole ensuing in-bounds pass. He scored with 50 seconds left to slice the lead to 50-47. Roncalli broke the full court press after the Gunderson basket and Schwan was fouled after making a basket with 38 seconds left, but he missed the free throw. Garret Brooks nailed a contested three-pointer to get Sisseton within 52-50 with 26 seconds left.

Roncalli threw the ball away on its next possession. Sisseton's Jordan Cornelius missed a three-pointer from the top of the key that could have been the go-ahead field goal in the waning moments.

"I really thought Cornelius' shot at the top of the key was good," Neuendorf said, "from straight away and it rimmed out and we got it."

Roncalli's Lucas Lorenz grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 3.6 seconds left. He made 1-of-2 from foul line. Sisseton, which was out of timeouts, got the ball to Cornelius after Lorenz's missed free throw. However, his halfcourt desperation heave fell short as Roncalli hung on for the win.

"Coming in here we knew that if we played well it was just going to be a battle," Nelson said. "It is fun for the kids to really enjoy that atmosphere."

Cornelius powered Sisseton with a game-high 21 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. Youngblom added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Redmen, who will play at Groton next Friday.

Schwan finished with a team-high 15 points and Andera added 12 points. Zach Schaefbauer scored 10 points off the bench, including seven points in the first half.

Aberdeen Roncalli (9-3) will host Warner at 8 tonight at the Civic Arena. It figures to be another tough test for the Cavaliers.

"We just need to bring energy," Schwan said about tonight's game, "not only the fourth quarter, but every quarter."

Hurdler wins for Northern

MANKATO, Minn. - Luke Hauert won an event for the Northern State indoor track and field team in Mankato Saturday.

He won the 60-meter hurdles in a national provisional time of 8.14 seconds in the final day of the Mankato Open. His coach was very happy with his effort.

"Luke has been very consistent," NSU coach Kevin Bjerke said. "He has hit a provisional every time he has run that event this season."

Bjerke said Hauert is working hard to shave just a bit of time off to qualify for nationals.

The NSU men finished third in the 4x400-meter relay. Bjerke said Andy Johnson and Nick Lindwurm both had good legs on the relay and individual events as well (Johnson in the 200 and Lindwurm in the 800).

The Wolves also got third- (Brandon Krein in 2:36.97) and fourth-place (Jacob Arechigo in 2:37.96) finishes in the 1,000 meters. Devin Allbaugh of Mankato won the event in 2:33.85.

NSU had several throwers do well in the meet and register personal bests. Freshman Tyler Robel of Watertown made the finals of the shot put and placed nine. "He required a significant personal best to make the finals," Bjerke said. "It was a good effort by Tyler."

The NSU coach also pointed out the PRs by the NSU duo of weight throwers Fergus Gavin (fifth) and Gerardo Magana (sixth) on Friday. On the women's side, freshman Breann Jackson had PRs in both the weight throw and shot put.

The NSU women's 4x400-meter relay team (Nicolia Edwards, Hannah Treinen, MaKayla Perryman, Jill Schaefer) placed second in 4:01.84 behind Winona State's 3:56.7. "That was a major highlight of the weekend," Bjerke said. "They crushed the school record and they all ran really well."

Bjerke also said the NSU women's pole vaulting trio of Katie Burton, Theresa Knapp and Calley Worth did well. They all went out at 10 feet, 6.75 inches.

Another highlight from Friday was Treinen of NSU who finished sixth in the women's pentathlon with 3,033 points. "That was the benchmark we were shooting for," Bjerke said. "It was her first time competing in the event, and it usually takes about 3,000 points to score at the conference meet. It was great to see her hit that mark."

NSU next will compete in a dual with Moorhead (field events at 5, running events at 6:30 p.m.) Feb. 6 at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen and then at North Dakota State in Fargo on Feb. 9.

Women Wolves win streak snapped

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State women's basketball team snapped a five-game winning streak by visiting Northern State Saturday.

The Beavers won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game 64-57. The game featured eight ties and eight lead changes, but NSU made only two of its last 13 field goal attempts.

"We had some shots in the end, but we just couldn't hit anything," NSU coach Curt Fredrickson said. "It was a disappointing loss. We had our chances, but we just couldn't finish it."

Morgan Lee led Bemidji with 22 points. The hosts made 44 percent (7 of 16) of their three-pointers. NSU made just 25 percent (3 of 12) its threes.

"We didn't play great defense in the second half," Fredrickson said. "We also shot ourselves in the foot when we missed all those easy shots in the first half. We must have missed 10 shots within two feet of the basket."

Rachel Krogman led the Wolves with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Alison Kusler added 16 points.

NSU freshman starter Devon Brecke missed the game due to back problems.

The Wolves remain on the road in NSIC play next weekend, playing at Winona at 6 p.m. Friday and Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.

NSU men sweep weekend on road

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Northern State men's basketball team hung on to a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road win in Minnesota Saturday.

NSU beat Bemidji State 58-55. It was a sloppy finish as the teams could manage only one field goal - a 70 foot Bemidj bank shot at the buzzer - in the the final 4½ minutes and both made turnovers and missed a free throw. NSU made three of its final 10 field goal attempts and BSU went three of 13.

However, NSU teammates Collin Pryor and Jared Hannigan each made a pair of free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the win. Five of BSU's last seven games have been decided by five points or less.

"Offensively, it was ugly to watch, but defensively is where we won the game," NSU coach Paul Sather said. "There are going to be nights where it isn't going to be pretty, but we got the stops when we needed them."

NSU seniors Pryor and Dustin Tetzlaff led the Wolves as they combined for 36 points, 17 rebounds and four steals. They made 16 field goals in 31 attempts.

"It wasn't perfect, but I was proud of how our guys competed," said Sather, whose team won at Crookston Friday. "Our bench again gave us good minutes. We are leaving here this weekend with a ton of things to improve on, but we are also leaving with a sweep and I am proud of our guys for that. We can build on that next week in practice."

NSU freshman Skye Warwick went six of 10 from three-point range in his team's two weekend wins. Against Bemidji, he and Pryor sparked the Wolves to a 32-26 halftime lead. Warwick hit a three, and then made a nice assist to Pryor to end the half.

The Wolves fell behind 14-4 to start the game. NSU's Seth Bachand was on crutches Saturday with a foot injury he suffered late in Friday's game against Crookston. He expected to be out for at a couple of weeks, if not more.

The Wolves remain on the road in NSIC play next weekend, playing at Winona at 8 p.m. Friday and Upper Iowa at 8 p.m. Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.

The Aberdeen Wings lost 2-1 in overtime to Bismarck Saturday night.

Nate Repensky of Bismarck scored the winning goal on a power play on an assist from Adam Knochenmus to disappoint a mostly Wings crowd of 1,156 fans in the 1,500-seat Odde Ice Center in Aberdeen. Aberdeen hasn't won a game since Nov. 30 and has lost 18 in a row.

However, the Wings have been extremely competitive under new coach Travis Winter. This was Winter's fourth game, and the Wings dropped two 4-3 decisions (one in a shootout) at Minot last weekend and lost 3-2 to Bismarck Friday.

Both teams scored in the second period Saturday. Aberdeen got its goal from Zach Kraft. Wings goalie Chad Catt faced 46 shots and made 44 saves.

The Wings have 20 games left in the regular season. They will start February at home in the Odde Ice Center with a pair of weekend games against Coulee Region at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Wings then will finish out the month at Coulee in Onalaska, Wis., Feb. 8-9; at Bismarck Feb. 15; vs. Bismarck in Aberdeen at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 16; at Brookings Feb. 22; and home vs. Brookings at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 23.

Warner holds up to Roncalli pressure

Size overcame speed Saturday night at the Aberdeen Civic Arena.

Warner's 6-foot-2 twin towers of Rachel Rogers and Miranda Ristau combined for 37 points to lead the Monarchs to a 44-31 non-conference girls' basketball win over Aberdeen Roncalli.

"Rachel and Miranda did a great job of finishing at the hoop," said Warner coach Stew Bohle. "Credit our perimeter players, too. They did a great job of getting the ball up the floor and getting good looks on the inside."

The taller Monarchs dominated life on the inside the entire night. Warner grabbed 20 more rebounds than the Cavaliers and took advantage of 18 second-chance points in the contest.

Still, Roncalli had its chances thanks to its non-stop pressure defense, which forced 27 Warner turnovers in the contest. That defense allowed the Cavaliers to wipe out a first-half deficit and grab a 23-18 lead early in the third quarter.

"We made a run in the third quarter. I thought we were kind of in good shape," said Roncalli coach Derek Larson. "We kind of hit a wall. We didn't get a lot of stuff done offensively after that."

Warner regrouped and held a five-point lead before completing back-to-back game-defining plays midway through the fourth quarter.

Ristau scored and was fouled and made a free throw on two straight possessions to push Warner's lead to 40-29 with 3:46 remaining.

"Those were big momentum swings there," Bohle noted.

Ristau said she was just concentrating on making the basket.

"I was just focused on getting them in and trying to finish, because that's what coach has been talking to us all year is finishing at the rim," Ristau said. "I came through and I was just so happy afterwards."

Rogers and Ristau scored all of Warner's points in the final quarter, combining to shoot 6 for 7 from the field.

Rogers finished with 20 points and Ristau contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Warner's height was also a factor on defense. The Monarchs got out in the passing lanes and then used their dominating size to block any path to the basket once the Cavaliers drove to the hoop.

"We're not used to that," Larson said of the six-foot-plus girls. "We can't even simulate that in practice with our coaches."

Mollee Karst topped Roncalli with 11 points and six rebounds before fouling out on the last Ristau three-point play.

Roncalli, 9-3, travels to Miller at 8 p.m. Tuesday for another non-conference game.

Warner, 13-1, hosts Faulkton on Tuesday.

Following the game, Bohle knew that his team had just passed a pressure-cooker test that will only make his squad better down the stretch.

"They kept bringing pressure" Bohle said of the Cavaliers. "When you have 27 turnovers and still win the game, you know we did something right."

 ABERDEEN RONCALLI: Morgan Gunderson 2 1-2 5, Mollee Karst 5 1-1 11, Abby Dockter 2 2-2 6, Tage Hanson 0 0-2 0, Taylor Hanson 2 1-2 5, Paige Sommers 1 2-4 4. Totals 12-45 7-13 31.
