Two Baseball Hall of Famers lost; one was former Aberdeen Pheasants manager

Saturday began with news of Earl Weaver's death at age 82. By the end of the night, 92-year-old Stan Musial had died, too, leaving baseball to reflect on two distinguished careers rich in contrasts.

One was born in St. Louis, the other became a star there. Aside from that, Weaver and Musial were about as different as two Hall of Famers could be.

A three-time MVP and seven-time National League batting champion, Musial helped the Cardinals win three World Series championships in the 1940s. His popularity in St. Louis can be measured by the not one, but two statues that stand in his honor outside Busch Stadium. Weaver was born in St. Louis, but his greatest success came as a manager in Baltimore. He took the Orioles to the World Series four times, winning one title in 1970.

Weaver, who won 1,480 Major League games, was the Aberdeen Pheasants manager in 1959.

NHL: Wild blank Stars 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn.-- Zach Parise scored his first goal with Minnesota.

But Josh Harding's seventh career shutout was even bigger news in the Wild's 1-0 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday.

It was his first start since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Harding became one of Minnesota's feel-good stories last year when the team announced his intention to manage his illness and continue playing.

Earlier in the summer, he passed on the chance to leave and instead re-signed with the Wild to play behind Niklas Backstrom again.

''I can't say enough and I can't thank them enough for how good the team has been from the top down,'' Harding said. ''I'm not just talking about the players, I'm talking about management, I'm talking about everybody. It's one of the reasons I signed back here. This is a family and I can't say enough about each and every guy in here.''

Harding stopped all 24 shots he faced in his first start since being diagnosed last summer.

''I can't say I'm surprised with how well he played,'' said Parise, who skated with Harding frequently at the University of Minnesota during the NHL lockout. ''He's been looking good for a while.''

Parise got his third point with the Wild a night after getting two assists in Minnesota's season-opening win against Colorado.

His first goal of the season came at 8:11 of the first period just as a 4-on-3 advantage for the Wild expired.

Parise one-timed a pass from Pierre-Marc Bouchard past Cristopher Nilstorp from the slot.

''It felt good to get one and get one early in the season,'' he said. ''We did a good job. It was a tough game both offensively and defensively for us.''

Both teams looked sluggish on the second night of back-to-back games. Each team was coming off a four-goal performance the night before, but struggled to find any sort of an offensive flow.

The Stars were 0 for 4 on the power play and never found a rhythm against the Wild's defense and Harding.

''We knew it's going to be like that, with the short season, with such a short season and we get to make up a lot of games in a short time,'' Stars right wing Jaromir Jagr said.

Despite their tired legs, the Stars had chances throughout thanks to the impressive play of Nilstorp, who signed with Dallas in June after playing the previous four seasons in the Swedish Elite League. He stopped 31 shots in his first career NHL start for Dallas.

''He played great,'' Alex Goligoski said. ''He was awesome. I don't know, they get the one on the power play, broke a couple of sticks, and other than that, he made some unbelievable saves.''

COLUMN: Wrestling Eagles golden this weekend

Just in time for the Lee Wolf Invitational this weekend in Aberdeen, coach Rocky Burkett and his Central wrestlers shined in Hartford Saturday.

The Golden Eagles won the West Central Tournament, piling up 211 points.

Central's Griffin Hieb was named the tournament's most valuable wrestler after recording three pins to win the 138-pound title. Another impressive thing about the tourney was Aberdeen's total team effort.

Thirteen Aberdeen Central wrestlers placed fifth or higher in their weight class to boost the Golden Eagles to the win.

 Wow.

More to come on the Golden Eagles and the Lee Wolf later this week.

Ex-NSIC QB takes control of Bears

The new coach of the Chicago Bears has ties to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Marc Trestman was Minnesota State University Moorhead's starting quarterback for five games in 1978. He helped the Dragons to a 6-5 mark, including a 5-3 record in the NSIC.

Trestman took over as the Moorhead quarterback from Ed Schultz. Now a successful national talk show host for MSNBC, Schultz was the starting quarterback for the Dragons in 1976 and 1977.

Northern State did not play Moorhead in 1978, but went 1-1 (won 20-18 at Moorhead in 1976 and lost to the Dragons 35-14 in Aberdeen in 1977) when Schultz was the starting quarterback.

On the road

Presentation College as an NCAA Division III men's basketball team without a conference has played 20 games this season, with 13 on the road. So far, the Saints have traveled 9,192 miles. PC has five games left, with only one at home. The Saints will travel another 1,846 miles for a total of 11,038 miles in the regular season.

Terrorizing opponents

Before Sunday's 62-46 loss to Iowa, Purdue senior forward Sam Ostarello had helped the Boilermakers win four Big Ten Conference games in a row, including three in overtime. The graduate of Stanley County in Fort Pierre has 67 points, 70 rebounds, 12 blocked shots, eight steals and six assists in the five games. The Boilermakers (15-3, 4-1 Big Ten) will continue conference play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Northwestern in West Lafayette, Ind.

Terror II

South Dakota State senior guard Nate Wolters passed the 2,000-point mark for his career last week. he all-time leading scorer in Jackrabbit history for men now has 2,022 points in 114 career games. He reached double figures for the 100th time in his career and for the 57th straight game. The Jackrabbits (15-6, 6-2 Summit League) will put their four-game winning streak on the line against North Dakota State at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at Frost Arena in Brookings.

Thriving on ice

Massive new video display systems by Daktronics in Brookings made their debut in the NHL arena in Tampa Bay Saturday. Another one makes its debut in Columbus tonight.

Thriving on wood

In Mitchell this weekend, the White River boys' basketball team defeated Canistota 62-50 in the Hanson Classic. Was that a preview to the State B championship March 16 at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen? Many feel White River will be there, since the Tigers have won three of the last five titles, but the vote on a possible opponent would be split among a variety of teams.

Double take

Sometimes when you are typing up a lot of results (agate, the small type), you type stuff that makes you stop and look again. So it was with me Saturday in typing the results of the Northern State Track Open in the women's 800 meters. In first was Mikayla Barondeau of NSU and in second was Makayla Perryman of NSU.

T he Aberdeen Cougars surrendered six goals in the third period en route to an 8-2 loss against the Sioux Falls Flyers on Sunday at the Odde Ice Center in high school girls' hockey action.

The Flyers were clinging to a 2-1 lead after the second period. Aberdeen knotted up the score at 2-2 just 57 seconds into the third period on a goal by Hailey Gould. Mikayla Santjer assisted on the goal. However, the Flyers netted six unanswered goals on their way to the win.

"Sioux Falls is a good team," Aberdeen coach Rob Weinmeister said. "We made a couple of mistakes and when we made those mistakes, they capitalized on them."

Hanna Mutschelknaus accounted for five of the eight goals for Sioux Falls. Kayla Nack, Robin Hatcher and Jessica Sandahl each had a goal apiece for the Flyers.

Gould scored the lone goal of the first period on an assist from Santjer. The Cougars outshot the Flyers 16-9 in the first period.

"I was very proud of the girls with the way they played that first period, because that is probably the best hockey they have played all year," Weinmeister said. "That is the hockey they are capable of playing. Now it is just getting them to do that for three consecutive periods."

Sioux Falls took the lead 2-1 on a pair of goals by Mutschelknaus and Nack in the second period.

"We didn't play bad in the second," Weinmeister said. "We came out a little a flat. They got back in it right away. We didn't play bad the rest of the second, but in the third, we made a few mistakes. We will continue to work and improve on those."

Aberdeen goalie Hailey Huff finished with 24 saves. Aberdeen was out-shot 32-30 in the loss. The Cougars will play at a tournament in Bismarck, N.D., this Friday through Sunday.

"It is kind of nice to see some other competition," Weinmeister said.

INDIANAPOLIS - Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning will get a chance to be teammates after all - at Sunday's Pro Bowl.

Luck earned his way to the game when New England's Tom Brady pulled out with an undisclosed injury.

He'll be joined by teammates Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis in Hawaii and Manning, the quarterback who preceded Luck in Indy.

Luck was the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft and set NFL rookie records for attempts, yards passing and 300-yard games. He fell just short of the league's rookie marks for completions and touchdowns.

Luck also won 11 games, the most by an No. 1 pick in the modern draft and tied an NFL mark by leading seven game-winning drives in the fourth quarter.

FOOTBALL: 49ers favored by oddsmakers

Sports books in Las Vegas made the San Francisco 49ers a favorite in the Super Bowl over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night based on the team's solid record and popularity with sports fans.

Oddsmakers gave the 49ers an early 4-1/2-point handicap and put the total score at 49 points for the Feb. 3 game in New Orleans. This means gamblers who bet on the Niners will collect only if they win by a margin of victory surpassing 4 points.

In addition to betting on the victor, fans can put money on whether the total points scored during the game will fall short of or exceed oddsmakers' predictions.

Jay Kornegay, race and sports book director at The LVH casino, said his book made the 49ers a 4-1/2-point favorite and quickly moved the line to 4 points as bettors gambled on the Ravens.

The 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC title game Sunday afternoon, rallying in the second half after falling behind by 17 points. The Ravens defeated the New England Patriots for the AFC championship later that night, with Joe Flacco throwing three touchdown passes in just over 10 minutes.

Oddsmaker Benjamin Eckstein of America's Line said he made the 49ers a 4-1/2--point favorite to encourage action on both teams.

''San Francisco is what we call a very public team because they've been very good over the past couple years, and people just like to bet on them,'' said Eckstein, who provides betting lines to more than 100 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada.

Baltimore will play San Francisco at 5 p.m. Feb. 3 on CBS in New Orleans for the NFL's biggest prize.

Two former Northern State football players are on the 49ers' staff. Mark Uyeyama is the head strength and conditioning coach, while Nate Breske of Webster is an assistant athletic trainer. Also, a former South Dakota State assistant and opponent of NSU as a Bemidji State football standout, Trent Baalke, is the general manager of the 49ers.

Plus, former SDSU assistant Brad Seely of Baltic is the special teams and assistant head coach for the 49ers.

Spotlight crashes down onto Madison wrestler during match

A South Dakota high school wrestler enjoying his moment in the spotlight had the match abruptly cut short when the light crashed down on top of him.

Michael McComish took stitches after the Friday night incident during the Madison High School senior's match against an opponent from Chamberlain.

The tournament features an overhead light fixture about the size of a large truck tire that casts a spotlight on the mat.

As seen in a YouTube video, the wrestlers sparred for about 50 seconds when McComish got into the referee's position with his hands and knees on the middle of the mat. Just before his opponent took the top position, the fixture crashed down on top of McComish.

Athletic director Bud Postma said McComish is recovering and was back in school Monday.

College Plus: Trinity Bible guard shooting to top of all-time scoring list

A guard from down south is shooting up the all-time scoring list at Trinity Bible College.

Mikey Rosario recently surpassed the 2,000 career-point plateau for the Lions. He has 2,020 career points and is fourth on the all-time scoring list at TBC.

"I think it just shows how much hard work I put in the gym everyday," the senior said about reaching 2,000 career points. "It means a lot."

The all-time scoring record is well within striking distance for Rosario. Bill Jackson is the all-time leading scorer with 2,184 points. Second on the Lions' all-time list is Bill Schofield with 2,134 points and Vaughn Jordan is third with 2,056 points.

"That will be a great honor," Rosario said about possibly being the all-time leading scorer.

Rosario hails from Fort Worth, Texas. He visited Trinity Bible College after his senior season at Calvary Christian Academy. Rosario didn't know what to expect when he made the trip Fort Worth to Ellendale, N.D., especially considering the differences in the two areas.

"I just really fell in love with the atmosphere," he said, "because it was really peaceful."

He said he wasn't homesick when he first moved to North Dakota. He said the people were friendly and he fit in right away. Rosario fit in right away on the basketball court as well. He started his freshman season and averaged 12 points per game.

He has been a consistent performer for the Lions ever since. His scoring load has increased every year. Last season, he scored 850 points.

"He is always in the gym shooting around," Trinity Bible College Jordan Nowell said. "He knows how to get his shot off and he has put in so much time. Every time he shoots, it has a very good chance of going in. That is just through his hard work."

The 5-foot-11 Rosario anticipates he spends three hours a day in the gym working on his game. He shoots 100 free throws, 100 jump shots and 100 three-pointers a day.

"He is really hard to guard him because he will take you to the hoop," Nowell said. "He can take you off the dribble. He is really tough. What makes him tough is how much time he spends in the gym."

The Lions are 7-10 this season. Trinity Bible has 11 games left on the regular season schedule. The goal this season is to make it to the national tournament again, said Rosario. Trinity Bible advanced to the national tournament last season in Springfield, Mo.

There are a few regular-season games on the schedule that Rosario has got his eye on. The first is this Friday against rival Presentation College in Ellendale. The Lions defeated the Saints earlier in the season in Aberdeen. It was Rosario's first time beating Presentation in his four seasons at TBC.

"I always seem to play well against them," Rosario said. "To go down there and to win in their place, it was pretty cool."

The other two games he is looking to forward to are on Feb. 1-2 against Oak Hills Christian College in Ellendale. The opponent is not what excites him. He is excited because his mother, Debbie, will be there to watch him play. It will be the first time anybody from his family will see him play a college basketball game.

"It will be emotional," he said, "because she hasn't seen me play since high school."

 SDSU, Wyoming in Spearfish

The Division I wrestling teams South Dakota State and 15th-ranked Wyoming took their show on the road this past weekend.

A large and enthusiastic crowd watched Wyoming defeated SDSU 21-13 in a Western Wrestling Conference dual at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. At 141 pounds, Kyle Komata of Wyoming nipped freshman Ben Gillette of Redfield 14-8.

"It's a great environment and we enjoyed coming out here," SDSU coach Chris Bono told the Rapid City Journal. "And we need to be out here. We have a lot of fans here and they have great wrestling out here, so it is well worth our time to come out and showcase our program."

High school girls' basketball: Summit defeats Warner

WARNER -- When it comes to South Dakota's best in high school girls' basketball or volleyball these days, Summit and Warner are in the conversation.

The problem for both schools, however, is that the roads to those state tournaments lead through Region 1B, composed of Summit's District 1B and Warner's District 2B. Summit, with a high school of 43 students in a town of 275, has won three of the last four State B basketball titles with a runner-up finish in the other one, along with fielding some great volleyball teams. Warner, 93 students and 462 residents, has won three of the last six State B volleyball titles with one runner-up finish, along with having some great basketball teams.

Tuesday night before a packed gymnasium in Warner, No. 1 Summit defeated No. 2 Warner 52-41 in girls' basketball. Summit is 12-0 and Warner 12-1.

"What a great atmosphere for these kids, and I hope the fans enjoyed it," Summit coach Mark Amdahl said. "It was two good teams battling. You can't get too high about winning these games, and we leave here knowing we have some things to work on."

Now that they have met in the regular season, the two teams will work toward a Region 1B clash later this season when the postseason rolls around. However, there are a lot of teams in the Class B districts of 1 and 2 that will have a say in whether that happens.

Summit used long-range shots to beat back the Monarchs, who would fall behind and then charge back throughout the game. Six of Summit's nine second-half field goals were three-pointers.

Things looked bright for Warner early in the third quarter. The hosts were down by 10 in the final minute of the second quarter, but would score five (Carly Rozell and an Emily Larson three-pointer) before the half ended. Then Warner came out and scored the first three points (a Rachel Rogers free throw and Ashley Rozell basket) of the second half to trail 25-23. Plus, Summit senior standout Logan O'Farrell picked up her fourth foul right after halftime and sat out the rest of the third quarter.

That is when Summit kicked it into high gear.

O'Farrell's twin sister Presley generated an 8-0 Summit run by scoring five and getting a steal. The other three points came from Kalissa Pereboom, who hit the first of her three three-pointers of the half.

Warner would rally to within five 80 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Summit answered with another 8-0 run. This one was fueled by three-pointers from Karissa Chamley and Pereboom and a Presley O'Farrell basket.

"Pereboom was lights out for us tonight," Amdahl said. "And Chamley hit a big three for us as well. We just have a lot of kids playing with confidence."

Pereboom ended with 14 points. So did Presley O'Farrell, who did most of her damage in the second half while her sister Logan scored 12 of her 13 points in the first half. Presley scored 10 of her 14 points, had four of her five steals and got most of her seven rebounds in the second half.

"This is a true team effort every night," Presley said. "The success of this team is built around teamwork and our coach, who is great. I know I can always count on all my teammates. We just work hard and have a lot of fun."

The Eagles also got nine rebounds from Logan O'Farrell and six assists from Shenia Steinocker.

Warner got 11 points and eight rebounds from Miranda Ristau and 13 points from Ashley Rozell.

"We made some defensive mistakes, but give all the credit to Summit," Warner coach Stewart Bohl said. "They are No. 1 for a reason. That is one very good basketball team and they are well-coached. They came out and hit shots. We went toe to toe with them, kept battling back and played hard, but it didn't go our way tonight. But again, give the credit to Summit."

This is a busy week on the road for Summit. The Eagles play at Wilmot Friday and then play Fulda, Minn., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the fieldhouse on the Dakota State campus in Madison with a college basketball doubleheader to follow between DSU and Trinity Bible (women at 4 and men at 6).

It also is a big week for Warner. The Monarchs will play Aberdeen Roncalli (8-2) - honorable mention in Class A - at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena followed by the boys' varsity game at 8. The Warner boys are 8-1 and Roncalli 8-3.

 SUMMIT: Logan O'Farrell 3 5-6 13, Presley O'Farrell 5 2-3 14, Christine Pearson 0 2-4 2, Shenia Steinocker 0 0-1 0, Kalissa Pereboom 4 3-4 14, Karissa Chamley 1 0-0 3, Nicolette Kneeland 3 0-0 6. Totals 16-43 12-18 52.

Three Minnesota natives will represent the Aberdeen Wings at the North American Hockey League Top Prospects Tournament Feb. 18-20 in Troy, Mich.:

Justin Parizek: 6-foot-1, 195-pound, 20-year-old forward from Lakeville.

Peter Krieger : 5-foot-11, 180-pound, 19-year-old forward from Oakdale.

Jake Horton: 5-foot-11, 190-pound, 18-year-old defenseman from Plymouth.

Last season, more than 160 scouts attended the event. Every NHL team and NCAA Division I school had scouts there.

More than one-third of the players who competed in last year's event ended up with an NCAA Division I opportunity.

This year, 120 NAHL players will be spread among six teams. The six teams - Dakota, Frontier, Great Lakes, Midwest, Texas and the NAHL 18U Selects - will each play three games.

The three Wings will play for Dakota, which will be coached by Austin coach Chris Tok (head) and Bismarck coach Layne Sedevie (assistant). Players from those three teams plus Brookings and Minot make up the Dakota group.

Each of the six teams will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. The number of players represented by each NAHL team was based on each team's winning percentage within their division as of Jan. 14.

Here is the schedule for the Dakota team at the tourney:

  •  Vs. Great Lakes at 2 p.m. Feb. 18.
  •  Vs. NAHL 18U Selects at 2 p.m. Feb. 19.
  •  Vs. Texas at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 20.

The Wings will host Bismarck in Aberdeen this weekend. Both games start at 7:15 p.m. at the Odde Ice Center.

South Dakota coaching legend dies

South Dakota basketball coaching legend Jim Marking knew how to turn each of his basketball teams into a family.

As a result, Marking-coached high school and college teams won almost 74 percent of their games. Marking, 85, died Saturday at the Brookings Hospital.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 7 this afternoon (Wednesday) at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with a wake service at 7 tonight.

Marking graduated from Parkston High School and South Dakota State.

He was the SDSU men's basketball coach from 1965-74. His Jackrabbits won the conference title four times and reached the postseason five times. He retired as the winningest coach in SDSU men's basketball history (148-80).

He was the first high school coach in South Dakota history to win state titles in Class A and B.

In four years at Hayti, he was 117-13, guiding the Redbirds to four state tourney appearances. Hayti was the State B champion in 1954 and runner-up twice.

In five years at Watertown, his teams were 78-35 and played in four State A tourneys, winning one (1959) and finishing second twice.

Marking's wife of 59 years, Carola (Koehn), died March 18, 2012. She also attended Parkston and SDSU and was the 1952 Jackrabbit Queen.

Survivors include his sister, Theresa (Don) Maxwell of Mountain View, Calif.; five children, Nancy Johnson of Sioux Falls, Tom (Cindy) Marking of Porterfield, Wis., Dan (Susan) Marking of Grand Rapids, Minn., Robert Marking of Brookings, Pam (Marvin) Rathlisberger of Crystal, Minn.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
