Redfield-Doland and Great Plains Lutheran captured team titles Monday at the Deuel Invitational cross country meet.
The Redfield-Doland girls, led by Nicolette Schmidt, scored 28 points with Sioux Valley in second place. On the boys' side, Great Plains Lutheran had 24 points, finishing 11 points ahead of Milbank. John Noyes of Redfield-Doland was the individual champion for the boys.
Aberdeen Roncalli placed third in the girls' division and fifth in the boys' division. Roncalli had three girls place in the top 20, which made Roncalli coach Mark Stone happy.
"We're pleased with how the girls are starting to bunch up a little bit," Stone said. Mary (Gutenkauf) and Jianna (Gellhaus) had a slow start, but picked it up during the course of the race."
Isabel Litzen placed 11th to lead the Roncalli runners while Gellhaus and Gutenkauf were 14th and 19th, respectively. Along with running together, the Cavaliers are receiving contributions from younger runners as well.
"They are bunching up better and that's really important," Stone said. "Coach (Lisa) Peterson and I really noticed that the younger girls are coming on and giving us a good lift."
The Roncalli boys were led by a 16th-place finish from Daniel Holmstrom. Just missing a top 20 finish was Justin Rosebrock, who was 21st.
"Justin ran one of his best races of the year," said Stone. "It was a good day for him. He has been a little discouraged, but he has been working hard. This will help him alot."
Stone noted that the boys "have some work to do yet" and are working hard in practice. Roncalli has two meets left (Miller and Sisseton), and Stone hopes to see even more improvement from those.
"We still have some unanswered questions as we head to October," Stone said. "We need to get some of those questions answered, and Coach Peterson and I will decide how to handle that."
The Cavaliers will compete in the Miller Invitational next Monday, which starts at 4:30 p.m.
