MILBANK -- It was definitely not golfing weather, but 10 girls' golf teams braved the elements on Saturday at the Milbank Poet Invitational at Pine Hills Golf Club.
"It rained all afternoon. The temperature never got over 39 degrees and the wind was blowing. It was cold and miserable," said Aberdeen Roncalli girls' golf coach Kerry Brandenburger. "We felt we needed to go because the state tournament will be held there. We wanted to play that course before state."
The state golf meets are May 20-21.
Parkston won the Milbank meet with a score of 348 followed by Harrisburg in second at 392. Aberdeen Roncalli was seventh at 445 followed by Sisseton, Redfield-Doland, and Groton fielded an incomplete team.
Sydney Bormann of Parkston won medalist honors with an 80. Second place went to her teammate Logan Wagner with an 85. The Cavaliers top golfer was Sam Bot with a 93.
"Sam played very well for the conditions. I was impressed with eighth-grader Christian Berbos, who shot a 125 in terrible conditions. I'm so proud of my girls. I didn't hear them complain about the weather," said Brandenburger.
The Cavaliers head to Madison on Monday, Groton on Tuesday, and Redfield on Friday for the Northeast Conference Meet at Fisher Grove Country Club.
