Two area wrestlers qualify for national tournament

Sean Blumhardt of Jamestown College and Cameron Schrempp of Dickinson State qualified for the NAIA National wrestling tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 1-2.

 Blumhardt, a senior from Oakes, N.D., finished third in the 125-pound weight class at the NAIA Northern Qualifier. The top four individual place winners at the region qualifier advance to nationals. Blumhardt is ranked sixth nationally at 125. Blumhardt has battled injuries during the season, but has won 10 of his 15 matches in his final campaign. He also has postseason experience, earning All-American honors in 2011.

 Schrempp, a senior from Eagle Butte, finished third in the 174-pound weight class. Schrempp will take a 21-3 record into nationals. Schrempp is ranked 11th in the nation. Schrempp helped the Bluehawks win the team title at the region qualifier.

 The official list of national championships participants will be announced on Thursday.

PC to bring back golf

 Suspended following the 2012 season, Presentation College will bring back golf this upcoming fall.

 "Presentation College is excited to announce that we are adding men's and women's golf to our athletics department offerings for the fall of 2013." PC athletic director Brian Spielbauer said. "Bryant Kucera, our current assistant men's basketball coach, will be taking on the challenge of building this program as we move forward. Bryant has done a remarkable job for us and is a tremendous recruiter and avid golfer. He will do a tremendous job for us in this area."

 As mentioned above, Bryant Kucera will assume the head coaching duties. Splitting responsibility between basketball and golf.

 "I'm happy to bring another competitive sport to Presentation and I'm excited to make more opportunities for student athletes to compete in another athletic program," Kucera said. "I look forward to taking over the men's and women's golf program and will do whatever I got to do to make sure our student/athletes compete as hard as they can on and off the course."

PC women's soccer adds assistant coach

 Ashley Elbers has been named an assistant coach for the Presentation College women's soccer team.

 A Sioux Falls native, Elbers comes to Presentation College having enjoyed a successful collegiate soccer career. She was a three-year starter at Southwest Minnesota State, having been named team captain during her senior season. As a sophomore, she earned Academic All-NISC honors, while helping the SMSU defense to its second-lowest single season goals against average in school history.

 A 2005 graduate of Washington High, Coach Elbers was a four-year letter winner and two-time team offensive MVP. She was also named second-team All-State as a senior and honorable mention All-State as a junior.

 James Valley Christian all-state point guard Adam Hofer recently signed to play basketball for the Dakota State men's basketball team. Hofer, the all-time leading scorer at James Valley Christian, is averaging 23 points per game this season for James Valley Christian. The 6-foot-1 Hofer is a two-time all-state selection.

 South Dakota State commit Anders Broman of Lakeview Christian in Duluth, Minn., scored 70 points in a 117-99 win over Cass Lake-Bena this past weekend. The 6-foot-2 guard also scored 71 points in a game last season. Broman is already the leading scorer in Minnesota boys' basketball history.

 Southwest Minnesota State will add women's and men's indoor and outdoor track and field as a varsity program and begin competition during the 2013-14 season. Southwest last sponsored men's track and field from 1969 to 1986 and again from 1990 to 1993, and sponsored women's track and field from 1972 to 1986 and again from 1990 to 1993.

 For the sixth time this season, and for the second straight week, The Summit League has named South Dakota State's Nate Wolters as its Player of the Week.
