While the winter winds howled outdoors, the women Wolves howled indoors Saturday in Aberdeen.
The Northern State indoor women's track and field team won eight of 15 events in the NSU Open at the Barnett Center. Several NSU seniors put on dominating performances:
Seniors Nicolia Edwards (200 meters) and Jill Schaefer (55-meter hurdles) each won an individual event, and ran on NSU's winning 4x400-meter relay team with juniors Hannah Treinen and Makayla Perryman.
Senior Lindsey Fluharty also won two events, the 55 meters and the long jump.
Three other NSU seniors won events: Brittney Olfert in the 3,000 meters, Mikayla Barondeau in the 800 meters (edging out teammate Perryman by less than five seconds) and Calley Worth, who tied with sophomore teammate Katie Burton in the pole vault.
Edwards was especially happy. She spent a little extra time during the holiday in her homeland of Kingston, Jamaica, and this was her first meet of the new year.
"I was pretty excited about how the day went," Edwards said with a big smile. "The relay was amazing. After running the 200, I asked my coach to put me in a different leg than the first one for the relay. I had never been the starter, and I was a little scared. But she just said, 'Oh, you seem a little mad, so maybe that will push you.' And it did, so I guess she knows me better than I know myself sometimes."
"Nicola was gone for at least three weeks, but she obviously got some good work done in Jamaica while she was home," NSU coach Kevin Bjerke said. "She took advantage of the sunshine."
"Lindsey Fluharty and Jill Schaefer had great back-to-back weekends for us," Bjerke added. "It is nice to see all those seniors do well. That is what you look for in your seniors, to step up and provide that leadership."
Bjerke said his men also competed well. The NSU men won four events, including freshman Taylor Rolf's eyebrow-raising 13-foot, six-inch winning pole vault.
"That is a foot higher than Taylor has ever gone before in his life," Bjerke said. "I was really excited to see that out of him."
NSU sophomore Mark Gilkerson also had a big day, winning the 800 meters and running the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay. Gilkerson's teammates on that relay were Eric Peterson, Andy Johnson and Nick Lindwurm.
"It was Mark's second week in a row of winning the 800 in a similar time," Bjerke said. "And that came after a very hard week of training."
Gilkerson said he was happy with the day. "Especially with the win in the relay because that gave our whole team a boost of confidence," he said. "It is nice to have a home meet because we are able to get all of our friends in here and show them what we do."
NSU senior Luke Hauert continued his successful track career as well with a win in the 55-meter hurdles.
