The cowbell is headed back to Ellendale.
Ellendale edged Oakes 54-51 on Friday in the 67th annual Cowbell Game between the two North Dakota teams. The winner of the annual game gets the coveted traveling cowbell for the upcoming year. Oakes won last year's meeting 52-51 in overtime.
Ellendale turned a 22-20 halftime lead into a 44-32 lead entering the third quarter. Oakes mounted a furious comeback, but didn't quite make it, losing by three points. Ellendale leads the all-time series 35-32.
Adam White powered Ellendale with 28 points. Shawn Hofer and James Johnston had 12 and 10 points respectively. Bryce Mehl scored a team-high 23 points for Oakes.
