YANKTON - The Aberdeen Central boys' golf team was in the hunt in a meet with the largest number of teams so far this season.

The Golden Eagles carded a 315 on Friday at the Yankton Invitational at Fox Run Golf Course. The meet, which featured 21 teams, was won by the home team with a score of 308. Medalist honors went to Cole Peterson of Sioux Falls Lincoln with a 72.

"Right now, we're starting to find out who the really solid teams are in the state," said Central coach Kurt Drube. "We've had a chance to play against everybody and there aren't too many surprises. Four of the top teams are Yankton, Sioux Falls Lincoln, O'Gorman and Brandon Valley. For us to compete with those four teams, we have to have four guys shoot in the 70s."

The Eagles came very close with three golfers in the 70s. Dustin Santjer and Trevor Hieb carded identical 75s to finish in a tie for third. Thomas Hogg was right behind with a 79.

"I'm really proud of our guys. We had three really good scores on a course that played difficult because of the wind. We just needed one more low score to get closer to Yankton," said Drube.

Cameron Huff, Tyler Foster and Logan Ramsey shot in the 80s.

The Aberdeen Central golfers are back on the links today at the Brookings Invitational, another big meet with about 15 teams.

"We're right there," said Drube. "We know where we're at. We have to go out and have four scores in the 70s for us to be able to compete."
