The Central boys' high school cross country team finished fifth and the Golden Eagle girls were second on Saturday at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet at the Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings.
Addison DeHaven of Brookings won the boys' individual race in a time of 15 minutes 40.06 seconds and he helped pull his team to a championship with 48 points. Pierre was second with 60 points. The top 15 runners in each division received All-ESD honors.
Aberdeen Central senior Hannah Kastigar won her second straight ESD crown in a time of 14:14.22. Brandon Valley took home team honors with 58 points followed by Aberdeen with 61.
"We ran very well, but give Brandon Valley credit," said Aberdeen Central girls' cross country coach Bill Martens. "We came up a little short. It's the best overall time we've had. We're a little disappointed to come that close. We're proud of our team and we keep getting better and that's all we can do."
After winning the ESD individual title in 2011, Kastigar put together back-to-back crowns.
"It was a big time race by Hannah and probably one of her very best. It's special to see her run her senior year at the conference meet and to win it back-to-back is very impressive. There are a lot of good runners in the conference," said Martens.
Kastigar is well known for her all-out sprint to the finish in races, but on Saturday she had built a little bit of a lead.
"At the start of the race, I was in the top four or five," Kastigar recalled. "After the first half, one of the girls (Annie Kruse of Yankton) started going faster, so I went with her and was in second. We went around a turn and I was right next to her. I kept going and went ahead of her and I was in the lead toward the finish line."
Which championship was better?
"They are both good and about the same," said Kastigar. "It was good that I could win by a lot more this year."
Kastigar finished first by 16.47 seconds.
The margin in the boys' race was 18.63 seconds by DeHaven over Brant Gilbertson of Watertown.
Aberdeen Central's top finisher was senior Griffin Hieb in 10th with a time of 16:55.31. He was followed by Tanner Peltier in 27th.
"We ran our fastest times this fall. We are way down from a couple of weeks ago," said Central boys' coach Greg Murley. "The team was fifth which is about where we thought. We had a good day. We're going to lose Griffin. He's the only senior. We ran a couple of freshmen, quite a few sophomores and one junior. We ran a young squad and we're happy that we got race experience today (Saturday)."
Murley noted that Brookings ran a good meet on a fast course along with Brandon Valley and Pierre.
"This is the most important meet of the year for us and where we're at. We can't compete for state titles yet," said Murley, whose hometown is Mitchell. "This conference has a long tradition and with myself having run in the conference meet, it makes it bigger for me. It's my favorite meet of the year."
The times were key for the Central boys.
"A lot of kids ran well today and PRed (personal best times)," said Murley. "The ones that didn't, came close to their best times. A lot of seniors ran in this race today (Saturday). We don't want to use our being young for an excuse for very long."
Just one regular season meet remains on the schedule. The Golden Eagles will run in the 5-Star Invitational at Huron on Thursday. The invitational will be held on the same course as the the state meet on Oct. 20.
