It was a roller coaster kind of day for Paige Sommers Friday.
Sommers broke two different bones in her collarbone playing for the Aberdeen Central girls' soccer team. The Aberdeen Roncalli multi-sport standout will miss the remainder of her senior soccer season.
"I was bummed because my high school season came to an end so shortly," Sommers said, "but then my mom was like 'Well at least you know you are not done because you have college next year.' Everybody kept saying that everything happens for a reason, which I believe, completely."
Later that day, Sommers committed to the Northern State women's soccer team after the Golden Eagles' 2-2 tie with Sioux Falls O'Gorman.
"I committed because I wanted to play soccer in college and I guess now is a good time since that would have been my last game ever," Sommers said. "I definitely didn't want that."
What were her emotions like on Friday?
"I didn't know what to think," Sommers said. "Excitement or to be sad; kind of both."
Sommers' recovery time from the injury is expected to be six weeks, she said.
Sommers, 18, went on a visit to the Northern State campus last Wednesday. She knew she was going to commit to coach Steve Kehm and the Wolves after her game on Friday.
"The players are really cool and of course coach Kehm has been there for me since I was like 10, I think," Sommers said. "I just knew it was the right thing to do when I toured it."
Sommers and Kehm have established a relationship over the years, as Kehm has spent some time coaching youth soccer in Aberdeen. The speedy Sommers played outside midfielder for the Golden Eagles, which was a position that was recommended by Kehm when she was younger.
"He was pumped," said Sommers, who plans on majoring in biology. "He went and told the team and they all texted me saying congrats. They all seemed pretty excited and I'm excited."
And as for the rest of her senior season, Sommers said she will not miss the basketball season for the Cavaliers.
"Oh yeah," she said, "I will be out on the floor, for sure."
Sommers can begin playing for the Wolves next fall. Verbal commitments are not binding until prospects sign their national letters of intent.
