In between the two runs was a balanced Golden Eagles offensive attack that kept the visiting Bobcats off balance and out of system.
"We were just solid tonight," said Central head coach Dennis Northrup. "Our defense was good. Our passing was good. We just didn't make a lot of errors."
Central recorded 29 kills on 86 swings with just eight attacking errors on the night
After trailing from the start in the opening set, Brookings (0-3) began the final two sets with competitive runs, but was unable to sustain either start. Central gained 27 total points in the final two sets on Bobcat miscues and combined them with an offensive attack that controlled net play through much of the night.
"We were pretty smart for the most part," said Northrup. "That was our game plan. They have two 6-foot-1 middle (blockers), so we were going to hit the ball on the outside and take some roll shots in the middle, and that's what we got accomplished."
Sophomore Brianna Kusler finished the match with eight kills and recorded four of those in the opening run. She also served the final 11 points of the night, racking up five service aces.
"It starts with our serving," said Northrup. "When we're serving well, we're able to run a lot of stuff because the other teams are giving free balls off of those. We're going to continue to keep the pressure on serving every match. That's something that's working for us."
Central (3-0) next heads west to face Sturgis Brown on Saturday. The Scoopers picked up their first win of the season Thursday with a straight sets sweep of Douglas in Sturgis.
