High School Tennis: Central splits tennis duals

Aberdeen Central suffered its first tennis loss of the season on Thursday, but quickly started another winning streak at the Northern State Courts.

The Golden Eagles fell to defending state champion Sioux Falls O'Gorman 9-0 before bouncing back to knock off Watertown 8-1. SFO defeated Watertown in the other dual.

"Overall, the team score certainly was not an accurate picture of the long rallies and the well-played points we had today against O'Gorman," said Central coach Lisa Link. "There were a lot of deuce games played."

The closest match came at number two singles where Ashley Thone lost to Jenna Czarnecki, 6-1, 7-5.

While Central did not win a single set against the Knights, Link said that her players did not back down from the challenge, noting that Kristen Hanson, Erica Hanson and Paige Prissel "were going point-for-point with some of the strongest players in the state."

Link was proud of the way her team finished off its singles play against O'Gorman.

The Eagles were able to carry that momentum over to the Watertown match and improved to 9-1 on the season.

"We do continue to improve in our ability to move the ball around the court and dictate points," Link noted. "I think it really showed up in our Watertown match."

Link pointed out that Central was able to avenge a pair of losses to the Arrows from earlier this season.

One of those came at number two singles where Ashley Thone defeated Rachel Kjetland.

"Ashley played scrappy singles not only against Czarnecki," Link said, "but she avenged an earlier 5-8 loss by beating Kjetland."

The doubles tandem of Lindsey Simon and Emily Magera also reversed their fortunes against Watertown's number three doubles squad.

"After losing to them last week 8-6, they earned a 10-4 win today as they continue to develop aggressiveness on the court," Link said.

Central heads to Huron on Saturday where the Eagles will face Huron, Brandon Valley and Mitchell.
