Two Warner High School football players, junior Traiton Peck and sophomore Bryce Fisher, attended the University of Oklahoma Football Camp June 1-3 in Norman, Okla.
Among the Sooners they mingled with was former Aberdeen Central standout quarterback Josh Heupel, the co-offensive coordinator and play caller for the Sooners. Heupel, who finished second in the voting for the 2000 Heisman Trophy, quarterbacked the Sooners to a national championship during his senior campaign. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, but his career was cut short by injury.
"We were on campus a day before the start of camp and ran into one of the Sooners coaches inside the stadium," said Peck. "When we told him we were from Aberdeen, he whipped out his cell phone, and called Coach Heupel. The next thing we knew, Coach Heupel was coming down the stairs to meet us. We spent the next 15 minutes or so visiting with him about growing up in Aberdeen and answering his questions about the upcoming Warner football season."
