NSU part of new building
The Northern State men's basketball team will play in the inaugural Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase this fall in Sioux Falls.
The Wolves will be joined by Augustana College the University of Central Missouri and Missouri Western State University for games Nov. 9 (4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) and Nov. 10 (2 p.m. and 4 p.m.). Pairings have yet to be announced.
Wisconsin will play St. John's of New York at the new 3,200-seat Pentagon Nov. 8. The Pentagon is part of the 162-acre Sanford Sports Complex located along Westport Avenue between Benson Road and West 54th Street.
New DWU coach
Miller native, Dell Rapids graduate and former Augustana College player Matt Wilber is the new men's basketball coach at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell.
He replaces Shane Murphy. Murphy resigned after leading DWU to a 53-41 record in three seasons to go into private business.
Nearly 150 applicants applied. The other three finalists were former Aberdeen coach Derek Robey of Sioux Falls O'Gorman, Northern State assistant Matt Sevareid and former DWU assistant Josh Mueller.
NSIC honors Redfield woman
Former Northern State basketball standout Julie (Jensen) Rozell of Redfield will be inducted into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference July 10 in St. Cloud.
A social hour will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Kelly Inn. Tickets with a deadline of July 1: NorthernSun.org.
Rozell and her 1993-94 NSU teammates - the NAIA national champions - were inducted as a team into the NSIC hall in 2008. She scored 2,058 career points and had 1,007 rebounds, first and second on the NSU all-time records. The Langford graduate was an All-American for two years in a row.
She and her husband of 17 years, Mark Rozell, have four children: Sarah (15), Drew (13), Addie (10) and Katie (7). For the past 17 years, Rozell has been teaching in Redfield.
Warner man earns award
Chuck Welke of Warner and 19 other individuals from across the state of South Dakota have been selected to receive the South Dakota High School Activities Association Distinguished Service Award for the 2013-14 school year.
It is the highest recognition bestowed by the SDHSAA. It is designed to honor individuals who have made significant long-term contributions to the high school athletic and fine arts activities in our state.
