After a wet and cold track and field season, it only seemed natural that the conditions persisted on Saturday during the final day of the USATF Dakotas Association Junior Olympic Championships at Swisher Field.
"It's pretty expected," said Ipswich pole vaulter Autumn Pitz of a day that featured strong wind, chilly temps and rain showers that got worse as the day wore on.
"It's difficult, but yet it's a mind game," said Pitz, who recently won the State B championship in pole vault. "You kind of just have to come and do it. That's the whole gist of track and field. You have to deal with the conditions and do your best in anything you do."
Like many of this past weekend's participants, Pitz plans on returning to Swisher Field in July for the Region 8 Meet featuring the top athletes from a six-state area. All will be hoping for much warmer and drier conditions than what they experienced on Saturday.
"Well, the Fourth of July hopefully is bringing some good weather," Pitz said. "Hotter is easier for pole vault. It's smoother, because you're not hitting a brick wall when you're going up."
Major meet ahead
The next stop for many of Saturday's competitors will be the USATF Region 8 Meet July 4-7 at Swisher Field. Last year's region was in Wisconsin and was something to remember, according to Bryce Malsom.
The Edmunds Central standout hurdler competed in that event and brought home many memories.
"Last year, the stands were packed there," Malsom recalled. "You can feel the crowd behind you and the times get faster as you go."
Malsom is hoping that hosting the region this year will work out to his advantage in more ways than one.
For starters, Malsom said Swisher Field is almost like a home track to him.
"I ran here last year and I've also done camps here," he said. "It feels like home."
Not only that, but Malsom thinks the field might be a little smaller compared to a year ago.
"I don't think as many of the Wisconsin people will come over here, just the fact that it's a long distance," he reasoned. "I think it will be more hometown people."
Malsom qualified for the national meet a year ago, but was unable to go because of obligations on the farm. However, all of that will change should he qualify this summer.
"This year we said that we were determined if I make it, we're going," Malsom said.
Stellar talent
Saturday's meet featured standout athletes everywhere, but few were more decorated than Amanda Levin of West Fargo, N.D. The upcoming senior recently won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash at the State A meet.
"It's always been a goal of mine since I was little," Levin said of the feat.
Levin went to the USATF region meet in Wisconsin last summer, where she won the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash and was second in the 200-meter dash, but she did not participate in the national meet.
Naturally, Levin will be back in the Hub City next month gearing up for another big regional showing.
"I'm using today kind of as a training day," Levin noted, "just pushing myself and getting ready for regionals."
When asked what her best event was, Levin responded, "I guess it depends on the day. I like the 400."
Paying tribute
Nicholas Bad Warrior of Timber Lake competed with a special sense of purpose on Saturday.
Bad Warrior was honoring the late Doug Kraft, who was killed in a plane crash Thursday night.
"He has always been my idol, because he almost made the (Miami) Dolphins and I'm real good friends with his son, Tanner," Bad Warrior said.
Kraft's loss will be felt throughout the entire Timber Lake area, according to Bad Warrior.
"He's one of the main community members. He's helped out with everything," Bad Warrior noted.
He said that all of the athletes in the school are already dedicating next year's sporting events to Kraft's memory.
"It's going to be a good year for Timber Lake athletics," Bad Warrior said.
As for Saturday, Bad Warrior won the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run and the 2,000-meter steeplechase and finished third in the long jump.
"I ran for Tanner and for Doug," Bad Warrior said. "My goal at the start of the meet was to bring home four goal medals for Doug, but I'll settle for three goal medals and a bronze."
Busy schedule
It would be hard to keep up by Preston Barr these days.
The upcoming eighth-grader from Aberdeen is busy with track and field, baseball and basketball.
On Saturday, Barr competed in multiple events. On Tuesday, he will be back at Swisher Field for the Hershey Meet.
"It's really fun," Barr said. "This is probably one of my favorite sports. It's really fun to compete against other people from other states like that."
Like the other athletes, Barr found himself not only dealing with the competition, but also with the elements.
When he came down the home stretch of the 400-meter dash, Barr was pelted with driving rain.
"I was dying," he said. "That last corner, I just couldn't do anything. It was tough."
Familiar face, new role
This past weekend's meet was nothing new for Lynne Nacke, but her job description was a bit different.
The former Northern State standout has helped out at the USATF meet in past years, but this time found herself as the meet director.
"I suppose probably the biggest challenge was finding volunteers," Nacke said. "That's probably the hardest thing is getting people to come out here and help out."
Nacke will also be in charge of the Region 8 Meet in July. While she will get assistance from workers in other states, she knows that meet will be an even bigger challenge.
"Just getting people out the day of the event to help is huge, especially for the July meet," she said. "We're going to need about 150 people."
The young and the old
One of the unique things about the USATF Junior Olympics is that competitors range from one age of the spectrum to the other.
For instance, 6-year-old Truitt Brannan of Bismarck, N.D., was showing off his prime form in the long jump.
The youngster knew a key to the event was keeping all his momentum going forward, "because if you fall backwards, they'll count it."
He said his favorite event was a relay race, "Because you pass (the baton) to people."
When asked if he was the smallest participant in the meet, Brannan responded, "No. There's a kid that's 5."
Meanwhile, a slightly older contestant was returning to his glory days during the javelin.
Garrick Larson, the 44-year-old head men's track and field coach at Concordia-Moorhead, was making good on a promise he made earlier this season.
"I cut a deal with my son that if he came to compete that I would do the javelin with him," Larson said. "That was part of the bargain."
Larson, who used to throw the javelin back in his prime, estimated it has been about a dozen years since he picked up the spear-like object.
"I'm going to be a little sore," he promised.
Interestingly enough, when the throwers were first introduced, all were called by their first name except Larson, who was referred to as Mr. Larson.
"It's just shy of grandpa when they called me that," Larson said. "Garrick was much better when they switched to that. I don't know what the oldest person is here, but it's just nice to come out and play a little bit."
