The Aberdeen Public Board of Education voted Monday to move forward with a cooperative agreement for wrestling between Aberdeen Central High School and Aberdeen Roncalli High School.

The board approved a first reading of a cooperative agreement and will likely revisit the topic and vote on approval at its next regular meeting on May 28.

In athletics, the two schools co-op in gymnastics, boys' and girls' soccer, competitive dance and competitive cheer.

"The co-ops have worked extremely well," said Gene Brownell, Central Athletic Director during his report to the board.

It is important to have a viable wrestling program in the community, Brownell said. The move would combine wrestling programs at all levels.

Pursuing the co-op was first approved by the school board of the Aberdeen Catholic School System.

All home events would be at Central, with the team competing as the Golden Eagles. The only exception would be a dual with Sioux Falls O'Gorman High School in which Roncalli wrestlers and Central junior varsity wrestlers would wrestle at Roncalli.

Brownell said formal paperwork will be drawn up. The South Dakota High School Activities Association has final approval of the co-op.
