Roncalli track cleans up at conference meet

Depth continued to dominate on Saturday.

The Aberdeen Roncalli track and field squads once again conquered their Northeast Conference foes to add to their growing list of league titles.

The Roncalli boys won their sixth NEC title in a row and eighth of the past 12 championships by scoring 197 points. The Roncalli girls added their fifth league crown in the past six years and eighth in the past dozen as well, by scoring 157 points. No other team in the meet was within striking range of either.

"To win a Northeast Conference track championship you have to have a lot of successes along the way," said Roncalli girls' coach Mark Stone. "You have to have contributions from a lot of people."

And that is where the depth comes in. The Roncalli boys scored nearly 200 points despite winning just four events.

"That is really a key for us. We have good depth," said Roncalli boys' coach Terry Dosch. "We maybe don't necessarily have the big star power. On the other hand, the athletes that we have epitomize what a team is all about."

Roncalli's girls won just three events, yet captured the team title by more than 40 points.

"We take a lot of pride in our numbers," Stone noted. "We work hard to get kids to consider participating in track and field. You win track meets because of your depth. You don't win because of one or two outstanding individuals."

Roncalli had three individual champs on the day.

Dalton Cox won the shot put, Layne Holzer won the 100-meter dash and Christy Renner took first in the pole vault.

However, the Cavaliers racked up major points by often placing more than one athlete in an event.

"I knew it was going to be a pretty good day when we went 1-2-3 in the 100," Dosch commented. "We scored a lot of points in the second through sixth place positions. There were a number of events where we scored three kids."

Roncalli also received first place finishes in the girls' 800-meter and 1,600-meter relays and the boys' 400-meter and 800-meter relays.

Dosch also pointed out the state qualifying performance of Anthony Andera in the pole vault. His second-place mark of 11 feet was a personal best by a foot.

"We knew he had the potential to do that," Dosch said.

Both Dosch and Stone said winning conference titles never gets old and is something the athletes make a high priority each season.

"Our kids take this pretty seriously," Stone said. "That's modeled for them by those that have graduated before them."

Dosch said it is satisfying watching athletes reach their potential.

"Watching kids improve and watching kids perform up to their expectations, that never gets old," Dosch said. "That's really why you coach, to help kids achieve their potential."

Multiple individual winners included Angela Young of Clark-Willow Lake in both hurdles races and the long jump, Tiara Gibson of Deuel in the 400 and 800, Nicolette Schmidt of Redfield-Doland in the 1,600 and 3,200, Janelle Paulson of Clark-Willow Lake in the 100 and triple jump, John Noyes of Redfield-Doland in the 1,600 and 3,200, Ephram Albrecht of Redfield-Doland in the 200 and triple jump and Dallas Goedert of Britton-Hecla in the high jump and long jump.

Roncalli now heads off to the Region 1A meet at noon Thursday in Britton. (The pole vault will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Swisher Field). Because of poor weather this spring the Cavaliers, like many other teams, are a bit short on state qualifiers making the meet crucial.

"Thursday is going to be a really big day for us," Dosch said. "We have five events qualified right now for the state track meet."

With precious spots at stake, the competition promises to be fierce.

"I can't remember the last time we had this few of qualifiers going into the region meet," Stone said. "It's going to be a fun day for track enthusiasts. I think it's just got great potential to be an exciting region meet."
