MILLER - Aberdeen Roncalli took advantage of some better weather to pad its state meet entries during the Miller Invitational track and field meet on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers had state qualifying performances in both the boys' and girls' divisions during a meet that went from light rain in the morning to bright sunshine in the afternoon.

"You could just kind of see the spirits lift," said Roncalli boys' coach Terry Dosch when the weather improved, "and when that happened (times) started to slide down. Without a doubt, we're better this week than we were last week."

Dalton Cox threw a personal best 53-feet 4-inches in the shot put to punch his ticket to the state meet.

On the girls' side, Roncalli's 1,600-meter relay squad clocked a time of 4:14 to qualify for state. That group includes Mikayla Malsam, Erica Carrels, Paige Sommers and Kendra Woytassek.

"The girls are feeling pretty good about that," said Roncalli girls' coach Mark Stone, "as well they should."

Stone also pointed that both Carrels and Sommers each ran a 100, a 200, a 400 and an 800 on the day.

"In all the years that I've coached, that doesn't happen too often," Stone said of having just one athlete accomplish that feat, let alone two in one meet. "That's a unique combination."

Abby Dockter threw a personal best 36-8 in the shot, which moves her up on the school's all-time list and is just two inches away from state qualifying.

Zach Schaefbauer won both hurdles races and just missed qualifying for state in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, according to Dosch.

Austin Hanisch won the 1,600-meter run and Dan Albl captured the 3,200-meter, both in personal best times this season.

"We ran a little light," Dosch noted, "but we also tried to run with a little bit of purpose."

The Cavaliers are gearing up for the Northeast Conference meet on Saturday in Sisseton.

Both Dosch and Stone have a few less questions now than they did when the week began because of what they saw in Miller.

"We do have more answers," Stone said, "and that's the result of having a good day today."

Meet results were unavailable at press time.
