SIOUX FALLS -- The Aberdeen Central girls' track and field team picked up three more first-place medals on the second day of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays and the Sully Buttes girls won a relay before the evening session of the meet was canceled because of cold and wet weather.

The morning and afternoon sessions of the meet were held on Saturday at the renovated Howard Wood Field.

Aberdeen Central's Alexis Clark picked up her second gold medal of the meet with a win in the pole vault when she cleared 11-feet. She also won the high jump on Friday. Larissa Swanson topped 10-feet and finished fifth in the vault.

"Alexis came in and was comfortable and relaxed and took charge," said Central girls' coach Jim Appl. "Larissa could have jumped better but we put her on new poles this week so she didn't jump as well as she could have. We expected that. She'll be just fine next week for conference. I'm proud of their effort."

Golden Eagles distance ace Hannah Kastigar won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 11 minutes 6.28 seconds. That time marks a personal best, a school record and the 10th-best mark all-time in South Dakota history.

"Hannah ran a smart race. She led the first half. A Brookings girl (Emily Berzonsky) spurted and tried to run Hannah's legs down, but that just made Hannah run faster. She kicked it in and ran a great race," said Appl.

Kastigar won by almost 5-1/2 seconds. Kastigar had a chance to win another medal, but the 1,600-meter run was weathered out in the evening.

Aberdeen's 1,600-meter medley relay team crossed the finish line in first. Madison Russman, Samantha Knecht, Lexi Weisbeck and Brynn Flakus ran a 4:21.51.

"Madison and Samantha put us in the right spot at about third. Lexi took the baton and went out and reeled in two of those girls and put us in a position to win it," said Appl. "Brynn got the baton and it was her against a Brandon Valley seventh-grader. Give Brandon credit. They ran a strong race and we were fortunate to come out on top. Our 4x1 relay team ended up fourth. All in all, we had a strong weekend. I can't remember the last time we got five first places at Howard Wood."

The 400-meter relay squad was fourth in Class AA.

The Sully Buttes 400-meter relay team of Remi Wientjes, Carly Jost, Karlea Stahl and Bailey Bradford won in Class B in a time of  :52.74, followed by Potter County in third.  The Chargers 800-meter relay team finished second in the Class B race and Potter County was third.

In the field events, Shekota Myer of Ipswich tossed the discus 127-9 for second place.

In the boys' competition, Aberdeen Central hurdler Josh Hilgemann finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of :41.11. He also qualified for the 110-meter hurdles, but that event was weathered out in the evening.

Hilgemann's day wasn't complete, however, as he joined with Anthony Buechler, Greyson Phillips and Layne Tieszen for a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter relay.

"Josh had a good day," said Central boys' coach Greg Murley. "He was disappointed he didn't get to run the 110s. He's a competitor. In the 800 relay, we're getting better and more crisp with our handoffs. It would have been nice to run the 4x1, too. We ran a lot better and we're getting there."

The Sully Buttes boys took fourth in the 1,600-meter medley relay and Potter County's Tate Nafziger was sixth in the shot put. An Ipswich team was eighth in the medley relay.

Aberdeen Central's next action is Saturday as the Golden Eagles host the Eastern South Dakota Conference championships at Swisher Field.
