Eureka graduate and University of South Dakota runner Jeff Mettler won the university 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school record time to wrap up the weekend for South Dakota track and field at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, this past weekend.
Mettler won the race in 8 minutes and :51.99 seconds, which broke the previous record of 8:54.50 he set at the Texas Relays on March 28. Mettler leads the Summit League in that event by 19 seconds and now ranks 11th in the West Region and 17th in the nation in the event.
