High school track and field: Athletes make giant leaps, great strides

The Aberdeen Central girls' track and field team and the Watertown boys displayed their depth in one of the early meets of the weather-ravaged season.

The Golden Eagle girls and Arrow boys took multiple places in several events at the Al Sahli Invitational track and field meet on Saturday in warm but windy conditions at Swisher Field. No team points were kept in the five-team meet: Aberdeen Central, Huron, Mitchell, Pierre and Watertown.

On the boys' side, new meet records were set in the 800-meter relay, Watertown, 1 minute 33.1 seconds; pole vault, Trent Francom, Huron, 14-feet, 6-inches; and 100-meter dash, Shay Bratland, Watertown, :10.9.

Girls' meet record setters were Alexis Clark, Aberdeen, long jump, 17-3/4; shot put, Abby Sudbeck, Mitchell, 37-5-1/2; 100-meter dash, Macy Denzer, Watertown, :12.5; Watertown, 400-meter relay, :51.20; and Clark, high jump, 5-7.

"The key for us this week was getting a chance to compete outside," said Central girls' coach Jim Appl. "For us, it was a chance to hit some qualifying marks and get a little bit better and I think we did that."

The Golden Eagle girls took three of the top four places in the 200-meter dash, led by Madison Russman with a time of :28.6. It was a clean sweep of the top three spots in the 800-meter run. Brynn Flakus edged Hannah Kastigar, and Lexi Weisbeck was a close third.

"It was really nice today that it is so warm," said Flakus. "We've been practicing in sleet and rain. The wind didn't help much, but it was bearable. Lexi started out fast and I knew that normally my first minute is a little slower. So I figured if I stayed right there with her, I would do good with the 200 in the wind and finish strong."

Kastigar is a strong closer, whose best events are longer distances. "Hannah has run the half a few times this year. Her races are pretty much the mile and two mile. It was nice having to run against her for a change and having to do things differently," said Flakus.

Central also went one-two-three in the 3,200-meter run, led by Kaitlyn Volk. In the 1,600-meter run, Kastigar and Kaylee Kappes took first and third.

The Golden Eagles were also well represented in the field events. Alexis Clark set meet records on the way to wins in the high and long jumps. She also added a second place in the pole vault, which was won by Larissa Swanson. Central swept the first three spots in the high and long jumps. Bridget White was second in both hurdle races. Lauren McCafferty won the 400-meter dash by almost three seconds.

"Our relay teams did a nice job and improved. Our pole vaulters are coming around and the high jumpers had a nice day. (Kelsey) Hannigan went 5-1. Both Kaitlyn and Madison (Waage) ran hard in the wind. Sam Scepaniak and Erica Shields led us in the shot. We're coming around and need to keep working and getting a little better. We got better in some events today and some where the times didn't get better because of wind issues," said Appl.

Three Central boys were the only entrants in the 3,200-meter run and finished in order: Tanner Peltier, Patrick Woods and Seth Moore. The same group finished in the same order in the 1,600-meter run in second, third and seventh places. Alex Tiede took fifth in the run.

"Those distance kids and I have essentially been together all year as I am also the cross-country coach," said Central boys' coach Greg Murley. "They've been working really hard. We ran those kids pretty hard and the meet went pretty fast. In a meet like the conference meet, there'll be more time between events. Sometimes you have to compete against yourself. They had pretty good times and there were 29 mile-per-hour gusts during the two-mile."

Surrounded by only Central runners, Peltier wanted to maintain his focus.

"I wanted to try to keep it strong and not lose sight of hitting a good time," the sophomore runner said. "I don't think I was on my usual pace. It was a pretty windy day. I have to keep trying. There's no more snow and it's finally warming up. My time was all right. There wasn't too much competition to try and push myself. Altogether, I think I did all right."

In the discus, the Golden Eagles finished third through seventh. Sam Schaunaman topped Central with third at 121-1 followed by Brock DeGroot, Sam Fettig, Lincoln Flakus and Jordan Albee.

"The discus facility was the one we didn't know if we were going to be able to do because of the field conditions," said Murley. "It was nice to see those guys go out and compete. We're young. We've got quite a few sophomores and juniors. Josh Hilgemann is the only senior scoring for us right now. We're doing the best we can to develop. We have a core of sprinters that are juniors and a core of distance guys that are sophomores. We need to keep working hard and learning from our experience on the track."

Mitchell Guthmiller placed fourth in the triple jump and second in the long jump. Brenden Miller took home a second in the shot put.

"Our jumps looked good. Mitchell went over 20 in the long jump and Jacob (Goehring) went over 19. They all jumped better today. That was a nice throw for Brenden," said Murley.

The Aberdeen Central track and field teams return to action on Tuesday at the Watertown Quadrangular, along with Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Washington. After that, it's the Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls Friday and Saturday and the Sioux Falls O'Gorman Invitational on Friday. The Howard Wood Relays return after taking last year off during construction.
