DES MOINES, Iowa -- Luke Hauert capped off a solid weekend by competing in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles at the prestigious Drake Relays on Saturday.

The Northern State senior hurdler placed eighth in the race with a time of :14.47 seconds. He was the only Division II athlete to make the finals. Vanier Joseph of Illinois won the race with a time of :13.59. Pierre graduate and North Dakota State hurdler Matt Tetzlaff finished sixth in :14.38 seconds.

NSU track coach, Kevin Bjerke, said that Hauert was in about fifth or sixth place halfway through the race, but said Hauert just ran out of gas toward the end.

"One of the reasons why he might have ran out of gas is he was on our sprint medley relay earlier this morning," Bjerke said. "He was the 400 leg."

Hauert ran his 400-meter leg of that relay in a very impressive 46 seconds. He helped his team earn second place in their heat and ninth out of 21 total teams in the relay. The team finished the relay just four seconds shy of the school record.

Hauert also won the 110-meter hurdles at the Kip Janvrin Open on Friday with a time of :14.17 seconds, which is unofficially the 10th best time in Division II.

"Making the final (at the Drake Relays) was just kind of icing on the cake for a really good weekend for Luke," Bjerke said.

The Wolves had a women's team compete in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay on Saturday as well. That team of Lindsey Fluharty, Maria Franker, Jill Schaefer and Sami Smith finished 15th, with a time of 4 minutes and :17.51 seconds.

"Overall it was a really good weekend for us," Bjerke said. "It was really fun to watch a ton of Olympians today competing at the Drake Relays. It was really fun for our kids to watch that. It was just a great track and field weekend."
