A pair of late runs in the nightcap gave Northern State a split of a college softball doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul Sunday.
The Wolves rallied for a 6-4 win in the second game after dropping an 11-3 decision to start the day.
A one-out single for Kelsey Gale started NSU's comeback in the second game. Gale stole second base, followed by a single for Kelsey Robling. A CSP error on the play allowed Gale to score the first run of the inning, and a double by Eryn Yancy drove in Robling with the final run.
Northern pitcher Kami Smesmo retired the Golden Bears in order in both the sixth and seventh innings. Smesmo allowed one earned run over seven innings on five hits with six strikeouts. Robling led a 15-hit attack by going 4-for-4 at the plate with Yancy adding three hits. Macey Engel and Yancy drove in two runs each.
Concordia-St. Paul struck early in the opening game, tagging Smesmo for six runs over the first two innings. Northern got to within four with a pair of fourth inning runs when Kelsey Gale was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Caitlin Moran singled to drive in the second run. The Golden Bears pulled away for good with four runs in their half of the inning.
The Wolves were held to four hits, including a solo home run in the fifth inning for Yancy, who had two of NSU's hits. The Wolves (13-17, 5-7 NSIC) are back in action Wednesday hosting Minot State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Moccasin Creek Softball Complex if field conditions permit.
