Saints' men down Providence

For the third straight night, the Saints defended their home court.

The Presentation College men's basketball team put the defensive clamps on Providence College en route to a 75-34 win on Sunday at the Strode Center. It was the Saints third straight home game in as many nights. PC defeated Crossroads College the previous two nights.

Presentation did not allow Providence to score 20 points in either half. The Freemen went through long stretches without scoring a basket.

"It was our defense that picked us up and we had to cut the turnovers down," PC forward Darrell Farr said. "Too many turnovers in the first half. We had to play smarter. That is all we had to do and we did that in the second half and we came out with a win."

After a back and forth opening minutes, the Saints took a double digit lead and took a comfortable 38-19 lead at halftime. Providence only scored six points through the first 13 minutes of the second half.

"We didn't execute like we needed to offensively," PC coach Jeremy Reigle said. "We had too many turnovers. We would make a good play and then we make three dumb plays. We have to eliminate that. I thought the first 15 minutes of the second half, we played really solid defensively."

Farr finished with a double-double with 22 points and 13 boards, including 10 defensive rebounds. Katonka Friar and Damian Salais scored 11 and 10 points respectively off the bench in the win. Sixteen players played for Presentation and 12 cracked the scoring column.

"Nice to see a lot of guys playing," Reigle said. "Nice to see a lot of guys getting a lot of contributions. All these guys work so hard. They all deserve an opportunity to play. It's nice to give them a chance out there and to do some nice things for us."

Added Farr: "It is always nice to get everybody in the game. It doesn't always happen every game. It is nice to see everyone play. That is what it is all about, is getting everyone in. It is nice to get a win like that."

Presentation College (8-8) will play Providence again at 2 p.m. today at the Strode Center.

Eagles maintain perfect record

HURON - A 9-0 run to end the third quarter fueled a win and kept Aberdeen Central's record perfect.

The Golden Eagles spurted at the end of the third quarter and maintained through the fourth quarter for a 56-45 win over Huron in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game on Tuesday. Aberdeen (9-0, 5-0 ESD), which is ranked second in Class AA basketball this week, remained undefeated in high school girls' basketball and Huron (1-6, 1-4 ESD) is still looking for its second win of the season.

After a long road trip to Brandon Valley on Friday and a tough, emotional win over Mitchell at home on Saturday, the Golden Eagles showed fatigue on Tuesday.

"We looked emotionally and physically drained," said Central head coach Dawn Seiler. "In that run to end the third quarter we switched our defense a little bit and got some stops and got some scores."

As they have all season, the Golden Eagles dominated on the inside. Central outrebounded the Tigers 36-30 as Brynn Flakus pulled down 10 boards to go along with her 10 points. Plus, Sara Niederbaumer made 9 of 15 field goal attempts and topped all scorers with 19 points. Samantha Knecht added 13 points and nine rebounds.

"We had an advantage inside. The kids did a good job on the inside but we didn't have enough legs on the outside. The shots kept hitting the front of the rim. The fourth quarter we played steady. We did enough to win the game," said Seiler.

One of Aberdeen's top bench players, Maddie Goetz, did not play after injuring an ankle in a sub-varsity game.

"We needed her energy," said Seiler. "She makes things happen. She has good quickness and is a good defender."

The Golden Eagles turned to a pair of freshmen, Brianna Kusler and Ally Steckler, for some playing time.

Huron was led by MaKayla Goergen with 11 points and Brittany Steffen with nine points. Seven Huron players scored and 12 Tigers played.

"We (coaches) walked into the locker room after the game and the kids were not happy with the win," said Seiler. "They knew they hadn't played well. They want to continue to get better every night. It's a good  thing knowing our kids are hungry like that."

Aberdeen Central stays on the road for an ESD game at Brookings on Friday.

A player for all seasons

An Aberdeen Roncalli athlete has a different sport for every season and sometimes two sports.

Senior Mollee Karst has played soccer and cross-country in the fall, basketball in the winter, and track and field in the spring. During the summer, she played on traveling teams for soccer and basketball.

Karst found success early in her high school career. She spent five seasons with the Aberdeen soccer team, which has a cooperative with Central and Roncalli high schools. Karst played some varsity soccer as a sophomore and spent the last two seasons as a starter. Her running career also started early in junior high and high school. In basketball, she has been a starter for the last 3 1/2 years and has distinguished herself as a scorer, rebounder and defender.

"We have relied on Mollee to guard the other team's best player, and on offense, we rely on her to score points," said Roncalli girls' basketball coach Derek Larson. "Rebounding is the same thing. She leads us in rebounds. She is very versatile and can go inside or go outside."

Karst is within reach of an important individual basketball milestone. She can surpass the Roncalli girls' basketball school record for career scoring, which is held by Tracy Stone. This week the Cavaliers play play two games.

Even without the defense, the points and the rebounds, Karst has made an impact on the Cavaliers basketball team.

"Probably the most important thing we get from her is that she leads by example on and off the floor. She's the person that gets us going. She's almost like having another coach on the floor," said Larson.

Karst switched things up this past summer. She usually played for traveling soccer teams, but elected to play for the South Dakota Stars AAU basketball team.

"We had practice Friday nights and Saturday mornings in Mitchell," said Karst. "It was a very big commitment, but was really helpful and helped me with my ball handling and shooting. Since I was 10 or younger, I had been playing soccer during the summer. I had to give that up and it was a hard decision."

She also changed up her fall season by choosing to compete in two sports: soccer and cross-country.

"My eighth grade and freshman year, I did both. My sophomore and junior years, I knew schoolwork was more important than athletics. This year, I had an easier school load and went out for cross country again," said Karst.

Roncalli finished 14th at the State A Cross Country Meet with Karst in the mix.

"She showed her willingness to work hard as a dual athlete this fall and that's tough for anybody to do," said Mark Stone, Roncalli girls' cross country and track and field coach. "I'm proud of her for all she's accomplished in every sport; those that I coach and those that I don't. She will leave a legacy with her teammates for working hard and giving her best effort."

Karst also played for the Golden Eagles soccer team that won the first ever state title sponsored by the South Dakota High School Activities Association and won it in Aberdeen in the fall of 2012.

"Mollee is an aggressive player, but has a good read on the game," said Aberdeen girls' soccer coach Merle Aske. "She does a good job of being in the right place at the right time, and is a good distributor of the ball."

Now, the basketball season is approaching its mid-point with the Cavaliers ranked fifth in the latest Class A poll with a 6-2 record. Roncalli is in a three-way tie for the top spot in the Northeast Conference and plays Redfield-Doland on Friday and Wagner on Saturday in the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Cavaliers are led by five seniors, Karst, Tage and Taylor Hanson, Morgan Gunderson and Abby Dockter.

"I enjoy how close we are," said Karst about her basketball teammates. "We're more like a family. It's the relationships that you develop over the years. It's going to be tough not playing with them next year. I hope to make the best of the time I have left."

Larson has watched this Roncalli team grow and develop.

"I was an assistant Mollee's freshman year and a head coach her sophomore year," he said. "It's been nice having a player like her and the rest of the seniors who lead by example and make sure we are doing things right in and out of practice. Mollee would be the first person to say that without her teammates, she wouldn't be the player she is today."

And that is a player for all seasons.

The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team is off to a 11-6 start, but two of its key players have now run out of eligibility.

After a two-year hiatus, A.J. Trennepohl (Lubbock, Texas) returned to finish out his college basketball career, but had only one semester left. Trennepohl was in the Hardrocker program for four years, prior to getting married and moving to Brookings. He and wife Ashley moved back to Rapid City for his senior season.

North Dakota State transfer Caleb Shockman (LaMoure, N.D.) came into this season with three semesters of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-7-inch junior will return to the court for the entire 2013-14 Hardrocker campaign.

Treenepohl passed the 1,000-point milestone and broke the school record for career three-pointers with 254. He will help coach for the rest of the season. Mines is averaging 67.8 points per game this season, and Trennepohl and Shockman were combining to provide an average of 23.9 ppg.

Another interesting note about Mines basketball is that both the Hardrockers and their opponents have each scored 1,153 points 17 games into the season.

The first-team and second-team selections advance to a national ballot from which the Hansen Division II All-America team will be named later this month. Luecke led Augustana in tackles, finishing the 2012 season with a career-high 108, including 50 solo stops. He intercepted a career-high three passes and finished the season with one sack and 4.5 tackles for loss. Luecke recorded 10 or more tackles in a game seven times on the season.

The 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division preseason player of the year, Luecke was named to the All-NSIC South Division first team defense both his junior and senior seasons. He also was selected to the 2012 USA Football News Division II Preseason All-America third team.

Prep Plus: Two Aberdeen wrestling teams debut at home

Although this is the seventh week of competition in the 2012-13 season, two Aberdeen wrestling teams will compete at home for the first time this season.

Both Aberdeen Central and Aberdeen Roncalli have been on the road. Central will host Brookings tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Golden Eagles Arena in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual and Roncalli will entertain Groton and Sisseton in a triangular tonight beginning at 6 p.m. at the Roncalli Gym.

"It's nice to finally be home. It's been a long season on the road," said Central wrestling coach Rocky Burkett. "It seems we travel to a lot of tough tournaments. It's nice to not get on a bus and travel three or four hours."

The Golden Eagles will host another ESD dual on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Brandon Valley. Central is 0-1 in ESD dual competition, with a loss to the defending State A champions from Pierre in December.

Aberdeen Central finished tied for 10th at the Rapid City Invitational in December and had five place winners, including a championship at 138 pounds for Griffin Hieb. The Eagles turned in a fifth place at the Rotary Invitational in North Dakota last weekend and once again had five place winners.

"We haven't even gone to a tournament with our full varsity lineup. We've been short handed with some injuries and last week some flu going through the team," said Burkett.

In this week's state wrestling poll, Roncalli has one wrestler among the top 12 and Central has 11 ranked wrestlers. Tyson Mitzel for the Cavaliers is ranked first in Class B at 160 pounds. Griffin Hieb holds down the top spot at 138 pounds for Central in Class A.

Other ranked Golden Eagle wrestlers are Seth Moore (113), Trevor Hieb (120), Trevor Larson (126), Mitchell Johnson (145), John Frisco (152), Zach Melcher (160), Grayson Neuharth (170), Cole Carlson (182), Aaron Henley (195) and Sam Schaunaman (220).

"The kids are pretty excited about being home," said Burkett. "Brookings has tough kids and it will be an exciting one. It's a short turn around with Brandon Valley on Saturday."

The Lee Wolf Invitational on Jan. 26 at Golden Eagles Arena is a big in-town meet for both Central and Roncalli. The Cavaliers finish the season with three contests in town: Sioux Falls O'Gorman on Jan. 25, Lee Wolf Invitational and a triangular on Feb. 5.

McLaughlin ventures into wrestling

Something new is brewing in McLaughlin.

The Midgets, thanks to Kyle Henderson, are on the verge of starting a high school wrestling program.

Henderson, who wrestled at Douglas High School and Dakota Wesleyan University, saw a need for the sport when he became a social studies teacher at the school two years ago.

"I wrestled basically my whole life and they've never, ever had wrestling," Henderson said. "I started a little kids program last year and we had pretty good numbers."

Henderson decided to take it a step further this year and has three eighth-grader members on the squad: Joseph Ybarra, Charles Little Bear and Chance Schott. While the Midgets still do not offer wrestling as a sanctioned sport, Ybarra picked up the school's first every varsity victory during the Lakota National Invitational last month.

Henderson believes there is enough support in McLaughlin to expand the program in the future.

"We have such a wide variety of student-athletes here and not all of them are basketball players," Henderson said.

Henderson, who is assisted by Sonny Sandquist, said the squad uses makeshift mats and equipment that has been donated to the school. However, the team still doesn't have a permanent practice area.

"It's kind of wherever we can unroll a mat," Henderson said. "We make do with what we have."

Regardless of the humble beginnings, Henderson has the proper perspective on the situation.

"It's all about having fun," Henderson said. "It doesn't matter what we have or where we're at, as long as we're having fun and learning wrestling and learning the life lessons that come with wrestling."

Miller donates to Conrad's Clan

Before the Pierre boys' basketball game against Our Savior (N.Y.) on Dec. 29 at the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, a donation was given to Conrad's Clan.

The Mike Miller Foundation, headed by Miami Heat forward and Mitchell native Mike Miller, joined with First Premier Bank to donate $10,000 and a Miller autographed jersey to Conrad's Clan, which raises money in support of Pierre basketball player Conrad Adam who is undergoing cancer treatment.

Conrad's Clan was originally started by classmates of Conrad Adam, but it has now taken on a state-wide presence as various basketball groups and teams have been added their support to the cause. Conrad's Clan has been embraced by opposing schools as the Governors play on the road this season. Opponents are wearing Conrad T-shirts and making donations to the organization.

The group not only wants to support Adam and his family but to also spread the word about the many people who are battling cancer.

Lending a hand and a voice

Aberdeen Christian senior basketball player Job Niewenhuis had to pull a little unexpected double duty at a game earlier this week.

After the starting lineups were announced, it was discovered that the person who has scheduled to sing the National Anthem was not in the building. With the fans already standing on their feet, Niewenhuis saved an awkward moment by coming over to the scorer's table and performing a flawless rendition of the song.

"I wasn't really prepared to do that at all," Niewenhuis said.

The former All-State Chorus member has sung the National Anthem many times before, so he wasn't worried about forgetting the words. His teammates encouraged him to come to the rescue once they saw what was happening.

"No one else was there and all the team has heard me sing at the volleyball games before," Niewenhuis said. "They were just like, 'Job. Job do it.' So I just told Coach (Dave) Palmer and we walked up there."

While Niewenhuis was rock solid throughout the song, he said felt a bit different inside than what he normally does.

"It was a little more difficult spur of the moment," Niewenhuis said. "Usually I don't get nervous before games, but while I was singing it, I was getting a little shaky. So I was on an adrenaline rush right at the beginning of the game."

Niewenhuis then went out and scored 19 points and hauled down 10 rebounds in the contest.

Coaching trio once again on same sidelines

A trio of coaches will once again be on the same sidelines, albeit in much different roles this time around.

The last time Derek Robey, Todd Neuendorf and Kendall Hoellein were all on the bench of a basketball game, it was as a coaching unit for Aberdeen Central.

All three men will be on the sidelines of a game once again on Saturday night; however, this time Robey will be opposing Neuendorf and Hoellein.

Robey is the head coach for Sioux Falls O'Gorman, which meets Aberdeen Roncalli, led by Neuendorf and assisted by Hoellein, at 6 p.m. at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls during the Dakota Schoolers Classic.

"It's just going to be fun for the kids," Neuendorf said, "but it's going to be fun for the coaches too to be back together."

Roncalli and O'Gorman used to meet on a regular basis back in the '60s. SFO won seven of the nine meetings, but Roncalli won the final matchup back in the 1971-72 season. The contest will mark the first time Roncalli has played a Class AA foe since the final Aberdeen Central-Roncalli game in 1994-95.

Neuendorf credited Robey for a willingness to play a team in a lower class.

"He agreed to play us. He doesn't have anything to prove. He's got five championships," Neuendorf said.

Larger schools are some time reluctant to play smaller opponents. However, the Knights were open to facing their Catholic counterpart from the north.

"It's kind of a no-win situation for them," Neuendorf explained. "If they win, they don't win by enough. If they lose, they lose to an A school."

Neuendorf said it is the same thing when Roncalli plays a Class B school.

That said, Neuendorf and his players are excited about playing the defending State AA champs.

"Our goal is to get the best people on our schedule that we can," Neuendorf said.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to face SFO again two years from now in the same classic, that game-taking place in the new Sanford Pentagon, which is currently being constructed.

Neuendorf served as an assistant under Robey in both boys' and girls' basketball while at Central. To this day, the two remain good friends.

"Coach Robey and I always communicate back and forth," Neuendorf said. "After most games, he'll text me or I'll text him."

When asked about the similarities in coaching styles from the playbook to Robey's trademark piercing whistle, Neuendorf responded, "I know what he runs, but I can't whistle at all."

Family: Parents, Bruce and Jill Spindler, sisters Devin (14) and Ashley (25), brother Blake (24).

Favorite athlete: Kevin Durant.

Favorite team: Duke Blue Devils.

Other sports: Football, baseball, track.

Hobbies: Hanging out with friends, going to gym and batting cage, watching Duke basketball.

Toughest competitor:"Skyler Flatten. He started guarding me last year. He's six-five and it's hard to get shots over him."

Future plans: Play either college baseball or basketball, undecided on school.

A favorite memory:"Scoring my career high against Britton-Hecla."

Disappointed with how the night was progressing, Connor Spindler used his anger as fuel and produced a happy ending for the Webster basketball squad.

Spindler tossed in a career-high 30 points as the Bearcats defeated Britton-Hecla last Thursday, including 14 during a fourth-quarter rally. On Saturday, he followed that with a 22-point effort in a victory over Tiospa Zina.

For his efforts, Spindler is the American News Athlete of the Week.

Webster trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter against Britton-Hecla, which wasn't what Spindler wanted to see on the scoreboard.

"I was upset that we were down by so much," Spindler said. "I made a few shots in a row, and everything fell into place and the other players started to shoot (better). We got momentum and ended up taking the lead and hit free throws at the end."

His fourth-quarter output included three of his four three-pointers of the night as Webster went on a 25-9 run to overtake the Braves. Spindler has 12 three-pointers this season, and while he has relied on his long-range abilities, he has worked on adding to his arsenal.

"I used to be just a three-point specialist, but I've tried to add stuff to my game," Spindler said. "I've worked on driving to the hoop."

Three-point line or free-throw line, Spindler is equally effective. For the season, he is shooting 24 of 25 (96 percent) from the foul line. After shooting under 50 percent from the free throw line during his sophomore season, Spindler said he worked on that during the off-season.

Spindler, a 17-year-old senior, leads the Bearcats with a 16.8 points per game average, is tied for the team lead in steals and is second in rebounding.

"Connor is a very hard worker and tremendous shooter with unlimited range," said Webster coach Ken Wright. "When he is hitting from deep, he is almost impossible to guard. He also is a solid scorer off the dribble and can see the court to find open teammates. This creates all kinds of offensive opportunities for our team. Connor is a solid, hard-nosed defender as well. I can't say enough about him; he's been an absolute joy to coach."

Teams are taking a different approach with Spindler, taking into account his tendency to shoot from behind the three-point line.

"I am definitely being guarded closer. A lot of teams guard me with taller guys; it's harder to shoot over them," Spindler said. "My teammates can hit shots, so it's pretty easy to pass the ball."

Spindler feels improved shooting has helped Webster get on the right track this season.

"We hadn't shot the ball very well," Spindler said. "Against Clark-Willow Lake, we were down at the half and started shooting the ball better, and scored 46 in the second half. If we shoot the ball well, I believe we can play with anyone."

Game of the Week: Basketball showdown in Ipswich

$

Lake Region Conference boys' basketball foes will lace their sneakers extra tight to prepare for a rivalry game in Ipswich Friday.

Both teams feature good balance, with senior players such as 6-foot-4 Landon Fischbach of Northwestern and 6-foot-2 Lane Myer of Ipswich drawing plenty of attention from opponents. What gives this conference game some extra spice is that Myer played for Northwestern last season.

"Landon is consistent down low, and usually a double-double kid," Northwestern coach Chris Osborn said of Fischbach.

Ipswich coach Scott Heyne said having Myer on his squad is a plus. "He's a good player and gives us an advantage," Heyne said. "He handles the ball a lot for us, and he is the big guy, and is expected to dominate the block."

Heyne added, "(Landon) Fischbach is a big kid and a good player. They have some size, three or four guys that are six foot. They (cause) some match up problems, because after our center, we are not very big."

Good shot selection and getting out to a good start will be crucial for Ipswich to have success, Heyne noted. "We can't get into panic mode."

Osborn knows his team is in for a battle as well. He expects to see some pressure defense from Ipswich and said it will be important for his Wildcats to keep turnovers to a minimum.

"We need to control the ball and hit the shots when we do get them," Osborn said. "And when we can, we like to get into transition. And we have to convert those."

After a rough start to the season, Heyne said his Tigers are playing better game by game with everyone doing their part.

"All five starters have pretty important roles," said Heyne. "Myer has been doing well (18 points and 10 rebounds per game) at the post. Cassius Pond is another post and has been coming on as of late, especially on the boards. Brady Thares is a shooting guard, and Logan Secker is a good ball-handler. Dustin Northrop has been giving us energy this whole season."

Osborn feels his Wildcats have yet to hit full stride.

"As a coaching staff, we feel we are getting better," Osborn said. "There is still a little inconsistency and a few lapses that we are trying to clean up."

The Wildcats feature good size with Fischbach and 6-foot-4 junior Nate Palmer.

"We're not the speedy type and not overly quick, so we really have to control the other team's quickness," Osborn said. "We have to hit an outside shot to loosen up the inside a little bit."

The athletes on these teams know each other well from football and Osborn feels the schools have developed a friendly rivalry. Both coaches feel Friday's game should be fun to watch.

"We kind of stole one on their court last year," Heyne said. "There's no looking past this one. We'd like to piece together a few good games in a row and see where it takes us."

Osborn agreed that the atmosphere should be a good one with two teams eager to show what they can do.

"It should be fun," Osborn said. "We have games marked (before the season) and the kids have this one marked as one they would like to take home."

SDSU quarterback has surgery

South Dakota State quarterback Austin Sumner had surgery this week to repair the thumb on his throwing hand and will miss all of spring practice, coach John Stiegelmeier told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader newspaper.

An upcoming junior from Brandon Valley, Sumner injured his thumb late in fall camp, hitting it on the helmet of a teammate during practice. He operated at less than 100 percent the entire season, but missed only one half of the first game. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Sumner finished 209 of 372 with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his second season as a starter.

"He could play with it, but it wasn't as stable as it should have been," Stiegelmeier said. "He kind of knew that (surgery was an option)." Sumner is likely to be out four to five months, but is expected to make a full recovery and should be ready for summer training.

Upcoming sophomore Eric Kline will move into the top spot in the meantime. The former Minnesota high school player of the year appeared in six games with one start, going 4 of 11 for 32 yards.

Seven SD football classes discussed

The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors this week discussed the seven classes of football that will begin this fall, up one from the six classes.

As a result, the picture of the top two classes became more clear. It appears that Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Rapid City Central, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Rapid City Stevens, Aberdeen Central, Brandon Valley and Sioux Falls O'Gorman will fill Class 11AAA. Meanwhile, Class 11AA is shaping up to be Watertown, Yankton, Brookings, Pierre, Mitchell, Douglas, Huron, Sturgis, Harrisburg, and Spearfish.

O'Gorman could have played in Class 11AA, but the Knights petitioned to move up to 11AAA. As the smallest (based on enrollment) of the eight schools in 11AAA, Brandon Valley had the first opportunity to move down, but the Lynx wanted to stay in 11AAA.

Watertown had the next opportunity to move to 11AA, and the Arrows have indicated in the past they want to make that move down, but its school board must decide that at its meeting on Monday. After that, Watertown will need to notify the SDHSAA of its decision.

Details are still being worked out for some of the other five classes (11A, 11B and the nine-man classes of 9AA, 9A and 9B). The teams in those classes will be announced later.

Golden Eagles raise the bar again

WATERTOWN - For the third time this season, the Aberdeen Central gymnastics squad has raised the bar higher.

The Golden Eagles set a new school record in points scored at the Watertown Triangular on Thursday. Watertown won the meet with 144.00 points followed by Sioux Falls O'Gorman with 139.10 and Aberdeen with the school record of 136.75. Krisia Bramer of Watertown won the all around title with 37.55 points.

The Golden Eagles first set the school record earlier in the season at 136.175 and followed that up with a 136.25 at a home triangular last week.

"We keep breaking the school record by a couple of tenths," said Aberdeen coach Jennifer Deutsch. "We're healthy as far as flu and colds, and injury-wise, we're doing pretty good. That's a true testament to their dedication to conditioning over the summer and they've been working hard."

Aberdeen Central's top event of the day was the vault where the Golden Eagles swept the top three spots. Alexis Clark won the vault with a mark of 9.25 followed by Taylor Schweitzer with a 9.2 and Larissa Swanson at 9.15. Jenny Janish finished second and scored a 9.0 in the balance beam which was her second score of nine or higher this season. One more 9.0 mark and she automatically qualifies for the state meet in the event.

Erin Punt of Warner, who trains with the Aberdeen team, tied for fifth in the floor exercise with an 8.95.

The Golden Eagles also had a good day on the balance beam as Janish, Schweitzer, Clark and Mattison Flakus did no fall routines.

"We were pleased with the entire day. Definitely, we were much happier with beam and very happy with the floor. We nailed our vaults. We had a couple of fumbles on the bars. We could have done better on bars than we did. We clearly picked up points in other events so that helped," said Deutsch.

The Aberdeen gymnastics team returns to the mats on Saturday at the Pierre Invitational.

Christian boys' basketball team wins in double overtime

Aberdeen Christian and Summit are building a boys' basketball rivalry, one thriller at a time.

The two hooked up in another classic Thursday night, eventually decided when Job Niewenhuis scored with 15 seconds remaining to lift Christian to a 57-55 non-conference win in double overtime at the Aberdeen Civic Arena.

Summit had a chance to tie the score in the closing seconds, but missed two shots in the lane.

"Last year, both games were decided on the last play of the game and this was, too," said Christian coach Dave Palmer.

The two schools, which are among the smallest in the state, have had some memorable matchups the past few seasons.

"The last three games have been decided by two points, one point and two points," said Summit coach Nathan Bloom.

The contest was tight throughout. The Knights led by seven points twice in the first half, and once in the fourth quarter, but each time Summit battled back.

The visitors eventually took a 48-45 lead before Tanner Droog nailed a three-pointer with one minute left in regulation.

"Tanner Droog struggled and struggled all week shooting the ball and he still had the confidence to pull up and take his shot, which he needs to, and he buried that three," Palmer said. "That really was a play that gave us a chance to go to overtime and keep going."

Droog, who had not scored up until that point, credited his teammates for getting him the ball.

"I just got an open look," Droog said. "My teammates found me and one finally went in."

Droog then made two key free throws to give Christian the lead before Trecy Zirbel tied it with 34 seconds left to force the first overtime.

The Eagles then led 53-50 in the first OT before Christian rallied and eventually took a lead thanks to two more free-throws from Droog.

"I've been struggling through the year a couple games, but they went in when it counted," Droog said.

Summit regained the lead on two fouls shots from Jake Steinocker only to have Niewenhuis tie the score again on a free throw to force the second overtime.

Both teams had chances in the second extra session before Niewenhuis eventually provided the game-winner.

"The good players made plays when they had to on both ends," Bloom said, "and that's why the game ended up the way that it did."

Sam Palmer scored 18 points, Matt Rohrbach added 15 and Niewenhuis had 14 for Christian. Droog finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Steinocker had 17 points and Zirbel 16 for Summit.

The Eagles also received a big boost from their bench as Jacob Gapp had 11 points and Montel Campbell had seven points, eight rebounds and two steals.

"Those young guys have been big for us all year," Bloom said. "They're a very good guard tandem and they work well together."

Christian, 6-3, heads to Leola on Saturday to face Leola-Frederick at 6 p.m.

The Knights have already had two nail-biters this week, losing to Northwestern in the closing seconds on Monday.

"It feels good (to win tonight), because Northwestern was a rivalry and we lost to them and then we came back on our court and pulled it out in double overtime," Droog said. "It was a team effort and everyone did their part."

Fans should already mark their calendars for the next Summit-Christian matchup.

"This is good basketball," Bloom said. "Two evenly matched teams going head-to-head. You can't ask for better basketball than this. It was a lot of fun."

Pins were easy to come by on Thursday at the Aberdeen Roncalli Triangular.

The Cavaliers played host to Groton and Sisseton in their wrestling triangular at Roncalli Gym. There were 18 total pins in the triangular. The Cavaliers had six total pins in their two matches against the Tigers and the Redmen.

"That is something we work on a lot is to be pinners," Roncalli coach Justin Briese said. "We want to be aggressive."

Groton won the triangular. The Tigers defeated Sisseton 54-24 and defeated the Cavaliers 53-29. Roncalli lost to Sisseton 42-24.

"It is one of those things that it is tough to get a win tonight," Briese said. "We won more matches than we lost in the actual matches that we wrestled. It was a good night."

The Cavaliers lost several points due to open weight classes.

"It hurts not having a full squad," Roncalli junior Tyson Mitzel said, "but in our eyes, we won the duals because we won most percentage of our matches, so it was a good day in our eyes."

Mitzel picked up a pair of wins on Thursday. The junior pinned John Meland of Sisseton at the 1:02 mark of their match and won by an 18-2 technical fall win over Tyler Scott of Groton.

"He comes out and does his work," Briese said. "He knows these matches right now are important, but he is looking further ahead to getting better for regions and state."

Mitzel, the top rated wrestler at 160-pounds in Class B, improves to 18-0 on the season.

"I feel good about how I'm wrestling right now," Mitzel said. "With these couple of tournaments coming up, I should get some good competition, which is always nice to get. I like to get tougher matches throughout the season, because win or lose, it is preparing you for what is coming ahead."

Sophomore Matt Schlosser picked up a pair of pins on Thursday in the 220-pound weight class. He pinned Brandon Nigg of Sisseton and Trenton Duncan of Groton to improve to 15-4 on the season. It appeared as if Schlosser was going to get pinned against Duncan. However, Schlosser reversed his position on Duncan and pinned him at the 3:17 mark.

"I just kind of arched my back as hard as I could and rolled through," Schlosser said. "Luckily he landed in bounds and just stayed in bounds and I got the pin out of it."

Schlosser normally wrestles in the 195-pound weight class, but was bumped up to the 220-pound weight class for the triangular.

"He had a little weight advantage on me," Schlosser said about Duncan. "He got a little high I noticed. I just arched my back. He fell over on the mat. I just got the pin out of it."

Senior Zach Sumner got a pair of quick pins in the 182-pound weight class for the Cavaliers. Sumner pinned Josh Currence of Sisseton just 55 seconds into the match. He followed that up with a pin over Brandyn Anderson of Groton just 44 seconds into the match.

"He came out and wrestled real aggressive," Briese said. "He just came out and wrestled two solid matches."

Roncalli will wrestle at the Potter County Tournament this Saturday in Gettysburg.

"It is another weekend for us to see where we are at with some guys we don't usually see and get ourselves better," Briese said.
