Prep Plus: Roncalli girls climb rating ladder

The Aberdeen Roncalli girls' basketball team continues to scale new heights.

The Cavaliers are rated second in this week's Class A poll, believed to be the highest ranking ever for the squad.

"We actually like to be where we're at," said Roncalli girls' coach Derek Larson of the elite position.

He knows that ratings do not win any games, but it does garner the team some state-wide recognition.

"It's kind of a little pat on the back," Larson said. "We don't talk about it too much, if ever. We're trying to stay humble."

Larson understands that being highly rated also comes with a price.

"The thing that's not so good about that is we always have a target on our back," Larson said. "We get everyone's best basketball."

Larson also knows that while his team has recorded four lopsided victories so far this season, the Cavaliers have yet to get into the meat of their schedule.

 That is about to change.

"We have the tough part of our schedule coming up," Larson said. "The games coming up are going to be a lot more difficult."

Roncalli's next four games include Britton-Hecla (3-1), Herreid-Selby Area (4-0), Groton (3-1) and top-ranked St. Thomas More (4-0) at the Redfield Classic.

"Four good games all in a row," Larson pointed out. "We know that we're going to have to bring our best basketball to beat all those teams."

Not only that, but looming on Roncalli's schedule the rest of the sason are foes such as Redfield-Doland (already 2-0 in the Northeast Conference), Deuel (3-1), Sisseton (defending region champion), Warner (4-0 and ranked fifth in Class B), Miller (1-0), Milbank (3-0), Summit (3-0 and ranked first in Class B), Clark-Willow Lake (ranked fourth in Class A), and a quality opponent to be determined in the Hanson Classic.

Larson is not looking that far down the road, however. He wants to make sure his players focus on the first task at hand.

"We preach every day about looking one game at a time and one practice at a time," he said. "We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves."

Slow start to the season

While most teams have already played three or four games to start the season, the Miller girls' squad has played just once.

The Rustlers, whose only game took place on Dec. 4, have had back-to-back games postponed because of the weather.

"It is frustrating," said Miller coach Darin Hunter, "but I think in my 23 years of coaching this is the youngest team I've ever had. I look at it as we've had a great amount of time to practice."

Not only that, but since the Rustlers won their only game so far, that also means the young players have had a chance to gain some confidence.

"It might work to our advantage in that we don't really have any negative things right now that we have to think about," Hunter said.

The down side is that not only have the Rustlers not had a game in more than two weeks, but both of the called off games have been rescheduled for next month meaning Miller's January schedule is jam-packed with 13 games.

"That's going to cut back practice time," Hunter pointed out.

Interestingly enough, Miller is scheduled to play De Smet on Friday. It will be the Bulldogs' eighth game of the season already, a complete contrast to Miller's start of the season.

"Hopefully, we can get this game in on Friday," Hunter said, "because we don't play again until Jan. 3."

Top swimmers

Two members of the Aberdeen Swim Club took top honors in their age divisions at a recent meet.

Tucker Iwerks and Hannah Kastigar won a competition called the quadathlon at the Snowfox Candy Cane Classic in Sioux Falls on Dec. 7-8.

Iwerks won the multiple event for 15-16 boys and Kastigar finished first in the 15 & Over girls. Kastigar was also the high point swimmer in her age division at the meet. Iwerks was fifth in high points. September Iwerks of the Aberdeen club won the 11-12 girls division.

The Aberdeen Swim Club has a slight break in the action over the holidays but will return to the water Jan. 5-6 for the annual home meet at the Aberdeen Family Y pool.

Small town team with big plans

$

A small community in western South Dakota is hoping for bigger things this season.

The Dupree boys' basketball team stunned South Dakota basketball fans last season with its upset against previously undefeated Faith in the Region 8B title game. Dupree, which was not ranked at all last season, finished seventh at the State B boys' basketball tournament in Aberdeen. It was Dupree's first state tourney berth since 1984.

"We didn't get much respect I would say," Dupree coach Jim Hood said. "I was never in doubt that we couldn't do it last year."

The Tigers lost only two players from last year's 22-4 team and have their sights set on another trip to the state tourney this year. However, now the Tigers will have the target on their back - and they know that.

"What I have been trying to do is just tell them that we have got to prove our point again and get back there," Hood said. "We know that we are the targets out here. Every team is going to play their best game against us. We can't take one game lighter than the other. It is high school basketball; anything can happen."

It is early, but so far so good for the Tigers. They are currently 2-0 and are receiving votes in the latest South Dakota Sportswriters Association Class B boys' basketball poll. But it will get tougher for Dupree coming up. The Tigers play Rapid City Christian tonight. Dupree will then play North Star, N.D., next Thursday at Wachs Arena at the Northern State boys' basketball classic. North Star is currently ranked No. 1 in the North Dakota Class B boys' basketball poll. The next day, the Tigers will face Region 3B contender Herreid-Selby Area at the Rotary Classic in Mobridge.

"The kids know what they can do and what is expected of them and things are going to get better and better for us as the season goes along," Hood said.

The core of the Tigers have been staples of the program for the past few years. And that familiarity of playing basketball with each other has shown on the court. After its surprise run to state last season, Dupree carried that momentum into the off-season. The Tigers held their own at team camps in Spearfish and Rapid City.

Hood had Dupree put in the Class AA division in those camps in the Black Hills. The Tigers finished fifth out of 15 teams at the camp in Spearfish in June. Dupree won the team camp in Rapid City in July. Its division had nine Class AA schools.

"The confidence was really picked up during the summer," Hood said. "It was just a big confidence builder knowing that they can play with tougher teams."

And a group of Tigers play on a Native American traveling team during the summer named Young Nation. The Dupree members of that traveling team include: Nate and Tate Widow, Kash Deal, Trenton Pretty Weasel, Hosteen Rave and Jeffrie Shaving. Young Nation has competed at tournaments in Eagle Butte and Fort Yates, N.D., in the past. The team played at the Queen City Classic in Spearfish after last season. Members of the team played at the Native American Basketball Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., this past summer.

That makes it fun for Hood to coach players that are involved with basketball year round.

"It is just great to coach those type of players," Hood said. "They have confidence in themselves. They know the game. They get along very well. It is a great thing to have a team like that."

The Dupree fans have taken notice. Dupree, a town of about 500 people, has established a solid fan-base in the past few years for its boys' basketball team. And the Tigers not only have a solid following from Dupree, but from other surrounding communities.

"I remember when I started here it was just a few parents that would make it to the games," Hood said. "Now, we are getting a real good following. We get the regular basketball fans that are coming to our games on the road and at home. That has been a big change."

Cavaliers keep eyes on goals

BRITTON - With plenty of reason to be distracted, Aberdeen Roncalli stayed focused and remained unbeaten Thursday night.

The Cavaliers, who have a major week looming on the near horizon, took care of the present with a 70-40 Northeast Conference boys' basketball win over Britton-Hecla.

Roncalli has three games in three days next week starting with two-time defending State A champion St. Thomas More. However, the only objective Thursday was finding a way to defeat Britton-Hecla.

"Everyone knows St. Thomas More is sitting on the doorstep, but tonight our goal was Britton," said Roncalli coach Todd Neuendorf. "If we worry about St. Thomas More and lose to Britton, then we've taken a step back."

The Cavaliers came out prepared for the Braves and jumped out to a 14-1 advantage to start the game. However, that quick flurry also produced some major foul trouble.

"We got into some foul trouble with Kendal Deutsch the first two or three minutes of the ball game," Neuendorf said. "It was just bang, bang, bang. It was like when you have your hand on the stove and you can't get it off fast enough."

Deutsch was supposed to be main defender on Britton-Hecla standout Dallas Goedert. That role then went to Zach Andera and Lucas Lorenz.

Goedert still got his points, leading the Braves with 19, but no other Britton-Hecla player managed more than six.

"Again, our team defense was pretty good," Neuendorf said.

The Roncalli offense was pretty good as well, shooting 51 percent from the field while placing four players in double-figure scoring.

Kory Schwan led the victory with 19 points, Dominic King followed with 17, Brayden McNeary added 13 and Zach Andera finished with 12.

"They don't care who it is. That's the other thing," Neuendorf said of his team's unselfish play.

In addition to his defensive effort and dozen points, Andera filled up the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Roncalli, which has won at least a share of the NEC title in each of the past four seasons, improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

The Cavaliers will take on St. Thomas More at about 8 p.m. Thursday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena, then host Elk Point-Jefferson the next evening before playing Mount Vernon-Plankinton Saturday in the Parkston Classic.

First up, however, will be a little rest, relaxation and reflection.

"It's important that the kids have some time off," Neuendorf said. "They've been going hard. We want them to have a great Christmas and have fun. It's a bigger picture than basketball."

Two Aberdeen Central basketball teammates play different positions and display different personalities on the court, but they both ended up with the same college choice.

Senior guard Brynn Flakus, 18, and senior center Samantha Knecht, 17, decided to attend the University of Sioux Falls and play basketball for the Cougars. Knecht transferred to Aberdeen Central from Faulkton before her junior season so this is the second year the two have played together in high school. In addition to the last two seasons at Aberdeen Central, Flakus and Knecht played on the same Dakota Schoolers team before their junior and senior high school seasons.

Both athletes, who were also considering Augustana College, were impressed after visiting the USF campus. USF, an NCAA II school, recently joined the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

"I didn't start looking at USF until this summer," said Knecht. "I didn't even think it was an option but I went on a visit there and realized how good an option it was. It (college choice) was pretty much up to me. My mom and dad went with me on a visit and helped me with everything but they wanted me to make that decision. I have to be happy with my decision."

One of USF's needs is at center and head women's basketball coach Travis Traphagen believes that Knecht will be a good fit with her height and athleticism.

"With Sami being 6-foot-2 and having the athletic ability that she has, I really think she will be a dynamic player in the NSIC," said Traphagen, a Columbia native and Groton graduate. "We knew we needed a post player in that recruiting class. We kind of put all our eggs in that basket hoping to get her, and we sure are glad that we did."

Flakus was impressed when Traphagen showed up at a summer tournament in Minnesota.

"He was one of a few coaches that showed up at that tournament," said Flakus. "Coach Traphagen called and said that he liked how I played in that tournament and invited me to have a visit. My parents really just let me make my own decision. They were really supportive the whole time. They knew that I was kind of torn between USF and Augie and maybe USD (University of South Dakota). I want to play basketball in college and they let me do my own thing."

The Cougar coaching staff liked the intensity and the football-like approach Flakus takes to basketball.

"I can tell her dad is a football coach," said Traphagen. "Brynn reminds us of one of our players (Holli Aggen). Brynn will run through a wall for you if you ask her to. That toughness gets brought onto the court and can be very contagious. We are very excited that she chose USF. Both young ladies are character kids and will have a major impact on our program in the future."

USF will lose three players to graduation next season; two guards and a center. Flakus is projected as a guard in college and said that she has to work on her outside shot and ball handling. She is not sure if she will red shirt her freshman season.

Knecht will play center and has not decided whether or not to red shirt the first season but thinks the USF coaches would like her to play right away.

Flakus, a gritty player, and Knecht, the smiling player, are also friends off the court.

"Everybody loves playing with Sami because she never stops smiling," said Flakus. "She's one of those people who are so nice on and off the court. Coaches can get on your case about doing things wrong but Sami is the one to tell you, 'Good job,' when you do something right."

Knecht appreciates the intensity Flakus brings to the game.

"I've enjoyed playing with Brynn," she said. "She's a great player and works so hard. She gets you open and gets herself open. I'm excited for the next four years."

The two players will feel more comfortable knowing at least one of their teammates when basketball drills begin in college next fall.

"It will be comforting to know there is someone there going through the exact same thing," said Knecht. "At practice it will be good knowing that if I don't understand something, Brynn probably won't either because we're coming from the same place. We can help each other out with the transition."

Flakus is excited about the challenge of college basketball, but knows she might have an uphill battle with her blue-and-gold and maroon-and-gold family.

"I'll try to talk my family into buying purple (USF colors) stuff," she said.

PC women defeated 65-60 against Pacific Lutheran

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Presentation's women's basketball team lost a 65-60 decision against Pacific Lutheran on Thursday in the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Presentation coach Alaina Benson said it was a game of streaks, with one team making a run, then the other.

It was close right away, then we let them go on a little run and got down by 15, said Benson. With about a minute and a half to go (in the first half), we made a run to cut the lead to ten.

The Saints trailed 33-23 at the break. Benson's team came out after intermission and used its defense to get even closer and eventually trade lead with the Lutes, who are from Tacoma, Wash.

We came out in a full-court trap and put pressure on them, and kept chipping away, Benson said. It was back and forth the entire second half, we were up by a couple and they were up by a couple.

A play toward the end of the game turned momentum in Pacific Lutheran's favor. The Lutes' center, Samantha Potter, went up for a shot, and Rachel Fuhrmann got both hands on the ball, said Benson. Potter came down with the ball, and no call was made by any official. After the players stopped for a moment, waiting for a call, Potter went back up and scored an easy basket.

That kind of changed the game, Benson said. We were down by three, had a wide open shot and missed, so we had to foul.

Potter finished with a game-high 18 points for the Lutes, and collected a dozen rebounds. Pacific Lutheran had a 57-40 advantage in rebounding, including 21 on the offensive end. Rebounding was a problem for the Saints, Benson said.

They were taller than us and had a couple of big girls, Benson said. We were able to get any shot we wanted, but did not crash the boards. Most of their points in the first half came from second shots, that's what hurt us.

Fuhrmann and Hannah Phillips notched 15 points each to pace the Saints and Benson noted a contribution by Kaylee Voorhees as well, who tallied nine points on three 3-point field goals.

She stepped it up for us, it's nice to see her shoot the ball a little more, Benson said.

The Saints (4-6) face Knox College of Galesburg, Ill., today at 11 a.m. CST.

They play a little like Grinnell (Iowa), said Benson of Knox. They rotate kids every 30 seconds and shoot a ton of threes. If we can beat their press and score every time, contest every shot and crash the boards, we'll be okay.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Presentation College could not overcome a slow first half en route to an 86-82 loss against Aurora (Ill.) University on Thursday at the D3 Hoopla.

The Saints trailed 44-31 at halftime.

We did not play well in the first half, PC coach Jeremy Reigle said. We played better in the second half, but we turned the ball over too much.

PC out-scored Aurora 51-42 in the second half. PC post player Darrell Farr powered the Saints second half surge. He finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Reigle also said that Anthony Hendricks and Quincy Davis had solid offensive games for the Saints.

The guys kept on fighting, Reigle said, chipping away at the score and just doing the little things better in the second half than we did in the first half.

PC will play Northwestern (Ohio) University today at the D3 Hoopla.

They are a nice team, Reigle said. They are really, really athletic. Even more athletic than the team we played today. It is going to be a tough one for us.

Everyone knows St. Thomas More is sitting on the doorstep, but tonight our goal was Britton, said Roncalli coach Todd Neuendorf. If we worry about St. Thomas More and lose to Britton, then we've taken a step back.

The Cavaliers came out prepared for the Braves and jumped out to a 14-1 advantage to start the game. However, that quick flurry also produced some major foul trouble.

We got into some foul trouble with Kendal Deutsch the first two or three minutes of the ball game, Neuendorf said. It was just bang, bang, bang. It was like when you have your hand on the stove and you can't get it off fast enough.

Deutsch was supposed to be main defender on Britton-Hecla standout Dallas Goedert. That role then went to Zach Andera and Lucas Lorenz.

Goedert still got his points, leading the Braves with 19, but no other Britton-Hecla player managed more than six.

Again, our team defense was pretty good, Neuendorf said.

The Roncalli offense was pretty good as well, shooting 51 percent from the field while placing four players in double-figure scoring.

Kory Schwan led the victory with 19 points, Dominic King followed with 17, Brayden McNeary added 13 and Zach Andera finished with 12.

They don't care who it is. That's the other thing, Neuendorf said of his team's unselfish play.

It's important that the kids have some time off, Neuendorf said. They've been going hard. We want them to have a great Christmas and have fun. It's a bigger picture than basketball.

College football: Duluth promotes OC, names interim AD

Minnesota-Duluth offensive coordinator Curt Wiese has been appointed the Bulldogs' new head football coach, while longtime UMD athletic department staff member Karen Stromme will assume the role of interim athletic director.

Those two positions were previously held by Bob Nielson, who resigned from UMD earlier this week to take over as the head football coach at Division I Western Illinois.

Wiese, 36, who becomes just the sixth head coach in the 80-year history of Bulldog football, joined the Duluth staff on Feb. 12, 2008. During his five years as commander of UMD's offense, the Bulldogs finished near the top of the NCAA II leaderboard four times in scoring.

Stromme is in her 30th year with UMD athletics and since 2003-04 has served as its assistant athletic director and senior woman administrator. Over the course of her 21 years as head coach with the Bulldog women's basketball program, Stromme compiled a 440-184 overall record and posted 21 consecutive winning seasons.

College Basketball: Presentation women knocked by Knox

Knox College found a hot hand from three-point range in the second half to pull away for a win over Presentation College.

Knox led by seven points at 46-39 at halftime, but outscored the Saints by 31 points in the second stanza for a 106-68 non-conference win in a game played at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Knox College took a total of 43 three-point tries and shot 40 percent from the field in the second half from the three-point area. Presentation got into the three-point act by attempting 30. The two teams combined to go 27-73 from three-point range.

"It was a very fast-paced game," said PC women's coach Alaina Benson. "We knew that's what they were going to do to us. I didn't think they were going to shoot as well as they did. In the second half, they came on strong with their three-point shooting. We didn't do the best job of closing out and contesting shots and we gave them a ton of open looks."

Twelve Knox College players scored led by 24 points from Jodi Marver and 15 for Alycia Webster.

Hannah Phillips and Kelli Boekelheide tallied 21 points each to pace the Saints. Kendra Ostrom added 11 points.

"It was a seven-point game at halftime, but after that they blew it wide open. We got tired and they took advantage of that. We were missing just about everything," said Benson.

The Saints return to South Dakota today.

"Most of our players don't get out of the tri-state area," said Benson. "An opportunity to play a couple of games in Florida before the holidays is special for them."

Presentation College takes a holiday break, but returns to action on Jan. 4 in a home doubleheader at the Strode Center against Crossroads (Minn.) College. The women play at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 p.m.

High school wrestling: Pierre flattens Aberdeen Central

The defending State A champions won the last four weight classes and racked up a total of six pins for a dual win.

Pierre beat Aberdeen Central 47-20 on Friday in an Eastern South Dakota Conference wrestling dual.

"For us to beat them, we have to wrestle perfectly," said Aberdeen coach Rocky Burkett. "We have to win some matches that we might not be favored to win and get an upset or two. We can't give up bonus points. We gave up six pins and that's 18 extra points right there."

The Golden Eagles won three out of four weight classes in the middle weights to pull within five points at 25-20. Mitchell Johnson started the ball rolling with a double overime win at 145 pounds. John Frisco followed with a 13-1 major decision over Seth Scott at 152 pounds. Grayson Neuharth narrowed the gap with a 12-4 major decision at 170 pounds.

The Governors took over and did not allow a point in the final four weight classes, picking up three pins and a major decision to close out the match.

"Everyone wrestled very hard. We just can't give up bonus points. Trevor Larson (126 pounds) beat a kid that beat him last time. Mitchell had a tough win. John Frisco won by two or three points the last time, but this time he had a major decision. If we're to beat a team that good, we can't make mistakes," said Burkett.

Larson edged Aaron O'Day by a score of 3-2 and Trevor Hieb pinned his opponent in the 120-pound match for the other Central wins.

The Central wrestling team takes a holiday break and returns to action on Jan. 4-5 at the Rotary Invitational in Bismarck, N.D.

"We'll give them a little break," said Burkett. "We have to get some extra workouts in if we want to be as good as everyone else. We have to have the kids go out and get some workouts on their own."

High school boys' basketball: Knights topple Mitchell Christian

Aberdeen Christian threw off a slow start offensively in the first half and exploded for 52 points in the second half.

The Knights topped Mitchell Christian 79-51 on Friday in a non-conference boys' high school basketball game at the Aberdeen Civic Arena. Aberdeen worked for better shots in the second half.

"We were very sluggish the first half shooting the three-ball and settled for shots," said Aberdeen coach Dave Palmer. "In the second half, we went out and broke them down with penetration and getting better shots. Sam (Palmer) did a good job. He had 10 points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth. We got a lot of points driving. They were over-playing on Matt (Rohrbach) and Sam broke them down with the dribble."

The Knights, who led by just six points at halftime, made 13 of 16 two-point field goals in the second half for a shooting percentage of 81 percent. After a slow start rebounding, Aberdeen won the battle of the boards by a 35-31 margin.

"It was not settling for open looks early and getting a better shot. We shot too quickly in the first half and they got too many extra possessions by rebounding," said Palmer.

Three Mitchell Christian players scored in double figures, including Jackson Feiner with 15.

The Knights leaders were Palmer with 26 points and Rohrbach with 21. Job Niewenhuis added 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Aberdeen Christian will host Wilmot on Friday at the Aberdeen Civic Arena at 6 p.m. in a makeup game. Christian also plays Herreid-Selby Area in a Northern State Classic on Dec. 29.

"Those are two really good games for us against physical teams," said Palmer.

High school girls' basketball: Knights stumble against Mitchell Christian

Aberdeen Christian lost a 58-12 girls' basketball decision to Mitchell Christian Friday at the Civic Arena.

The visitors held the Knights scoreless for the first half the contest, building a 37-0 lead. Nine players scored for Mitchell Christian, led by Becca Glanzer's 16 points.

Aberdeen Christian coach Josh Carlson said the Knights are showing improvement in each game.

"We were rotating the ball and hadn't done that," Carlson said. "The girls are learning where to be with the ball. There are a lot of positives we took away tonight."

Sydney Wollman paced the Aberdeen Christian effort with six points and Cheyann Olson collected five rebounds.

Carlson noted that the Mitchell Christian post player was effective against the Knights, and the hosts had to switch defenses to try to stop her.

"We were playing zone the whole time and moved our guards from the perimeter to the post player," Carlson said. "You could tell a difference when we did that."

Carlson said the biggest thing Friday was the rebounding and second-chance points were what hurt Aberdeen the most.

"Our girls need to learn how to stop the second shots, a lot of their points came off those," Carlson said.

The Knights are back in action on Jan. 5, hosting Edmunds Central for a girls'/boys' doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.

 MITCHELL CHRISTIAN: Becca Glanzer 6 4-4 16, Alexa VanLaecken 4 1-2 9, Emily Reynen 4 0-1 8, Abbie Reynen 4 0-0 8, Brittany Zoss 2 1-2 5, Lindsay Thompson 2 0-1 4, Ashley Glanzer 2 0-3 4, Khiree Held 1 0-0 2, Kelsey Thompson 1 0-0 2. Totals 26 6-14 58.
