The South Dakota Short Course State Indoor Swim Meet started Friday with a scheduled 38 boys' and girls' swimmers ages 13 and older swimming the mile at the Aberdeen Family Y pool.
For those of you counting at home, that is 66 lengths of the 25-yard, eight-lane pool, or 33 laps. The pool is part of the Northeast Regional Health and Fitness Center, which opened Nov. 19, 2005, in Aberdeen.
The state swim meet, hosted by the Aberdeen Swim Club, will continue today and Sunday. There are 488 swimmers entered. Here are the sessions:
Today: 8:45 a.m. to noon (12 & Under) and 1:45 p.m. to 7:10 p.m. (13 & Over).
Saturday: 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. (12 & Under) and 12:45 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. (13 & Over).
Here is some things I know about the high school girls' and boys' basketball tournaments:
Girls' tourneys
Class AA district champions and state qualifiers were Sioux Falls Roosevelt (16-6), Sioux Falls Washington (20-2), Aberdeen Central (20-1) and Rapid City Central (14-7).
Two more State AA qualifiers will be determined at 7 tonight in the Region 1AA tourney: Yankton (5-15) at Sioux Falls O'Gorman (13-9) and Watertown (7-15) at Sioux Falls Lincoln (13-8). For my predictions, I pick SFO and SFL.
The final two State AA qualifiers will be determined in today's Region 2AA tourney: Rapid City Stevens (8-14) at Mitchell (19-3) at 3 p.m. at the Corn Palace and Sturgis (8-14) at Pierre (11-11) at 7 p.m. For my predictions, I pick Mitchell and Pierre.
The Aberdeen Central girls will be making their 13th straight appearance in the State AA girls' basketball tourney, the longest such streak in that division.
Aberdeen Central coach Dawn Seiler is 507-202 in her 30th season as a head coach, with 15 years at Central and 15 at McIntosh.
Aberdeen Central graduate and Sioux Falls Washington girls' coach Nate Malchow is 137-52 in his eighth season with the Warriors and as a head coach. Washington, which was 13-31 in Malchow's first two seasons and did not advance to the state tourney, has now won six straight district titles to advance to six state tournaments in a row.

The District 16B Tournament championship will be at 6 tonight MST at Harding County High School in Buffalo between Faith (18-2) and Harding County (18-3).
