RAPID CITY -- Gymnastic powerhouses Rapid City Central (State AA) and Deuel (A) defended their state team titles on the first day of the state meet Friday.
Aberdeen Central finished sixth in the State AA at the 40th annual meet at the Carold Heier Gymnasium in Rapid City.
The Golden Eagles finished seventh at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet last week, but jumped ahead of three fellow ESD teams and three Greater Dakota Conference squads at the state competition.
Rapid City Central posted a winning team total of 151.700 to defend its crown followed by Watertown with 145.850 points. Aberdeen compiled a score of 135.175 which is one of its highest scores of the season at a big meet. The Golden Eagles sixth place finish matches its finish at the state meet last season.
Aberdeen scored highest in the vault and lowest in the uneven bars as a team. Taylor Schweitzer had Aberdeen's highest placing with a tie for ninth with a score of 9.325.
"We needed to fix our connections and stick our routines," said Aberdeen coach Jennifer Deutsch. "We looked good on the vault with three scores in the 9s."
Larissa Swanson (9.00), Schweitzer and Alexis Clark (9.125) produced the top three scores for the Eagles.
Next up were the uneven bars.
"We're getting sounder and sounder. I'm happy with the bars," said
Deutsch.
Swanson turned in a no-fall routine on the balance beam. Aberdeen finished up with floor exercise.
"The floor was exciting and fun. We looked good," said Deutsch. "We had scores in the mid to upper 8s. We did the best we could. We had a few falls on beam but they fought hard."
In an interesting side note Aberdeen Central was partnered with Vermillion, an A team, during the team competition. Both teams finished in sixth place.
The state meet will continue with the individual competition today at Rapid City Stevens High School. The State AA portion will start at 9:30 a.m. with awards at 2 p.m. The A portion will start at 4:30 p.m. with awards at 9 p.m.
