On Jan. 12, 2012, at Frost Arena in Brookings, the South Dakota State men's basketball team defeated the University of South Dakota with tip-off outdoor weather of minus 11, 16 mph wind for a wind chill of 34 below.
On Thursday, the SDSU men defeated USD at Frost with game-time weather of minus 12, 10 mph wind for a wind chill of 30 below. They need to move that game to July.
Here is some other things I know:
Familiar face
The producers of the Don Meyer movie for Moonglow Films are still finalizing the financing part of the deal. "My Many Sons" is the working title. Meanwhile, one of those producers/actors who was in Aberdeen last year has a role in a Super Bowl commercial with Robin Williams. Casey Bond is one of the football players in the background of that commercial. While you won't get to see Bond's face in that commercial, you will get to see him on TV soon as he has landed a role on the show "Nashville."
SDSU record
The South Dakota State men's basketball team (18-6, 9-2 Summit) defeated Kansas City 88-57 Saturday to break a school record with 28 consecutive home wins at Frost Arena in Brookings. It is the second longest active NCAA Division I winning streak, trailing only Syracuse (35 in a row at the Carrier Dome). Kansas lost at home on Saturday to Oklahoma State, snapping its 33-game home winning streak.
SDSU men II
The Jacks drew 16,483 fans in three home games in eight days, including consecutive sellouts in wins over North Dakota State (Jan. 26) and South Dakota (Jan. 31).

Canceled events
Some high school athletic events are having to be canceled because there is no time in the calendar to fit them in as postseason play is approaching fast. For example, the Miller at Ipswich basketball doubleheader will not be made up.
Stuck
Saturday night's bad weather left the Aberdeen Roncalli boys' basketball team in Brandon for the night. Meanwhile, the NSU track team said it was stranded at the Summit corner about 8:30 p.m.
NHL leader
Former Sioux Falls Stampede star Thomas Vanek of Buffalo is among the scoring leaders in the NHL. The University of Minnesota alum and Austria native has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) after playing in seven of Buffalo's eight games this season. He had 61 points for the Sabres last season. Vanek, one of 17 former Stampede players in the NHL, scored 80 goals for Sioux Falls in the USHL from 1999-2002. Buffalo (3-4-1) will host Florida at 2 this afternoon.
NFL awards
Adrian Peterson of Minnesota won the Offensive Player of the Year award and Peyton Manning of Denver was the Comeback Player of the Year. Robert Griffin III of Washington was Offensive Rookie of the Year award and Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly won that award on defense. Now the head coach in Arizona, Bruce Arians became the first interim coach at Indianapolis to win NFL Coach of the Year honors. Houston end J.J. Watt won Defensive Player of the Year.
Verbal commitments
Brandon Valley quarterback Chase Marso will join teammate wide receiver Nate Winter in playing football at Augustana. The duo, along with NSU verbal recruit Adam Guthmiller, led the Lynx to a 12-1 record and State 11AA runner-up finish to Sioux Falls Washington last season. Guthmiller was an all-state defensive end. The 6-foot-3 Marso passed for 3,152 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2012 to lead the Lynx to the state championship game for the first time since 1998.
Meanwhile, 6-foot-4, 240-pound Mason Leiseth of Hamlin has verballed to SDSU, where he is a projected defensive end. Also planning to attend SDSU as a preferred walk-on will be Troy Hunhoff, a 6-3, 225-pound tight end and punter from Yankton.
