BRITTON -- While Aberdeen Roncalli dropped a pair of Northeast Conference wrestling duals, the Cavaliers held their own Thursday night.
Milbank won all three of its duals and Britton-Hecla/Langford won twice on the night.
Roncalli lost to Milbank 54-22 and to Britton-Hecla/Langford 39-30, but those numbers were a bit deceiving.
"We had seven contested matches (against Milbank) and we won five of the seven," said Roncalli coach Justin Briese. "We may lose the team score, but as we look at it, we can only control what we can control."
The Cavaliers got a big boost from Brayden Hilton who scored a pin at 152 pounds. Zach Sumner also added a pin and Tyson Mitzel, Riley Johnsen and Matt Schlosser won by decision.
Mitzel, who is undefeated, scored a 9-1 win over Spencer Folk at 160 in a marquee match. Mitzel is rated number one in Class B while Folk is rated third in Class A.
Roncalli also wrestled solid against Britton-Hecla/Langford, winning two of five contested matches. One of the losses was a double overtime setback.
Including in the wins was the first-ever varsity victory for Roncalli seventh-grader Austin Cihak at 106.
"He came out and wrestled hard," Briese noted. "It was good for him to get a good start."
The two duals kicked off a wild weekend for the Cavaliers, who will wrestle three days in a row. Roncalli hosts Sioux Falls O'Gorman tonight. That match will follow the SFO vs. Warner-Northwestern match at 6 p.m. at the Roncalli Cafetorium. The Cavaliers then participate in the Lee Wolf Invitational on Saturday at Golden Eagles Arena.
