Fundamentals crucial to Central basketball girls' win

Aberdeen Central used some childhood lessons to remain undefeated on the season.

The Aberdeen girls' basketball team played well together and shared the basketball on the way to a 60-29 Eastern South Dakota Conference win over Watertown on Friday at Golden Eagles Arena. Aberdeen, which is ranked second in Class AA this week, improved to 10-0 overall and 8-0 in the ESD. Watertown dropped to 3-8 and 3-6 ESD.

"We think one of our strengths is that we play well together," said Aberdeen girls' coach Dawn Seiler. "We're willing to share the basketball. We're willing to make that extra pass. I thought we did a good job of moving the ball pretty quick. When we got up the court in a hurry, the ball got in the basket in a hurry. When we had to settle in and run our half court offense, we weren't impatient."

The Arrows suffered with turnovers and poor shooting in the first half and trailed 35-11 after the first two periods. Watertown committed 13 turnovers in the first half and shot 19 percent from the field.

"For us, it's been a struggle scoring," said Watertown coach Pat McClemans. "The turnovers and not getting opportunities to score are a big deal. I'm proud of the way our kids played because they competed. I thought there were a lot of times in the first half when we had pretty good position and Aberdeen just threw over the top of us."

Early in the game, Aberdeen Central attacked Watertown's zone with the inside duo of seniors Samantha Knecht and Sara Niederbaumer. The two bigs combined for 27 points and nine rebounds in the game. Knecht topped all scorers with 21 points as the 6-foot-2 center connected on 9 of 10 field goals in the game.

"Whether we were man or zone it didn't make any difference. They are undefeated for a reason because they have all the pieces," said McClemans.

Three Watertown players, Shayli Kirsch, Elli Stevenson and Mandy Tetzlaff, scored five points each, and Ashtin McClemans added five rebounds.

"I thought we executed well the first half," said Seiler. "We didn't always finish with the shot but we got the looks that we wanted. Any time you play Watertown you have to be prepared for everything and that was the case tonight (Friday). I thought our kids did a good job getting the shots we wanted."

Aberdeen's Brynn Flakus added 15 points and three assists. Brianna Kusler chipped in with six points and three rebounds in a reserve role.

"Coach talks about passing the ball a lot and how we need to be strong with the ball always and move it quickly," said Kusler. "I thought we worked the ball really well and we didn't get stalled. We worked the plays really well."

Central had not played a game for a week.

"We needed a week," said Seiler. "We were fatigued. We've got some nicks that you typically have this year. It was a good week. We really challenged the kids on Monday to have a great week of practice and I thought that they did that."

In the injury department, Aberdeen sophomore Maddie Goetz missed another game with an injured ankle.

Aberdeen Central takes to the court again on Tuesday hosting Pierre in an ESD contest, and Watertown entertains Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup.
