FREDERICK - While Aberdeen Roncalli was rocking on offense, it was rolling on defense.

The Cavaliers blanketed Leola-Frederick and walked away with a 62-33 non-conference boys' basketball victory Tuesday night.

Roncalli shot 66 percent in the opening half and had more than offense on the night. However, it was the defense that drew the attention of Cavaliers' coach Todd Neuendorf following the game.

"I was more ecstatic with our defense," Neuendorf said. "Our defense was really good tonight. Offense is going to come and go. You can't control that. What you can control is your defense. Tonight, we played a pretty good defensive basketball game."

At the focal point was Kendal Deutsch who drew the defensive assignment of stopping Leola-Frederick standout Brian Sumption.

"You can't say enough about Kendal Deutsch," Neuendorf said. "We told Kendal, you've got one responsibility: guard Sumption. He takes that personally."

Neuendorf pointed out that Sumption finished with 11 points, and nine of those took place when Deutsch was out of the game.

"Our whole team defense was good," Neuendorf said, "but Kendal Deutsch was really spectacular on the defensive end."

Meanwhile, Roncalli was pretty solid on offense as well. Kory Schwan made 6-of-8 shots, including three three-pointers, in the opening half for 15 points to help stake the Cavaliers to a 34-18 advantage.

"We ran some stuff for Kory and he got going for us," Neuendorf said.

While the Cavaliers eventually cooled off a bit on offense, Neuendorf said his team is getting better by the game.

"The kids executed what we wanted to and we got some good looks," he said. "We're getting there."

Schwan finished the night with 17 points to lead the Cavaliers. Zach Andera followed with 13 and Dominic King contributed 12.

Roncalli, 3-0 on the season, travels to Britton on Thursday for a Northeast Conference game against Britton-Hecla.
