Northern State heavyweight Matt Meuleners added another championship to his resume Saturday at the Minnesota State, Moorhead, Tournament on Saturday.

The Wolves' two-time defending national champion defeated Chad Johnson of Augsburg College 3-2 in double overtime. Johnson is the reigning Division III national champion.

"Matt had a great match," said NSU coach Pat Timm. "He has definitely had some great competition during the last month."

The tournament was divided into two divisions. The Red Division was for upper classmen while the White Division featured freshmen. Along with Meuleners in the Red Division, Anthony Bruno (125 pounds) was second and Chad Gibson (184) was fifth. In the White Division, Gavin Larson (149) was third, Cole Scheulke (Hwt.) was fourth and Sean Havlovic (157) was sixth.

"I thought we competed well as a whole, and that's pretty important," Timm said. "That is something we've been missing the past few weeks."

The Wolves will wrestle twice next week, first at Mitchell Wednesday for a dual with Dakota Wesleyan at 7 p.m. and the hosting Chadron State at Wachs Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"Overall (Saturday) was a good day and hopefully we can bring that into next week and thrive on what we did this weekend," Timm said.
