Aberdeen dropped a 7-5 decision at the Odde Ice Center against the Huron All-Stars. It was the Cougars' first game of the season.
"For the most part, we were in the flow of the game and things weren't too bad," Aberdeen coach Rob Weinmeister said about the season-opener.
Aberdeen trailed 3-2 entering the third period. The All-Stars went ahead 4-2 after Brook Tschetter scored a goal just 32 seconds into the final stanza. The Cougars responded by scoring three straight goals in a span of little over two minutes.
Madyson Ogdahl netted a goal at the four minute, 38 second mark. Mikayla Santjer dropped in a goal at the 6:46 mark and then Hailey Gould scored just 11 seconds later to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead.
Huron answered with a goal 55 seconds later to knot the score up at 5-all. Huron's Hope Goethel scored the go-ahead goal at the 8:59 mark and she added an insurance goal at the 13:33 mark.
"The girls played very hard and they played well," Weinmeister said. "I think just our youth comes out there in the sense of we have to put that whole game together of playing as a team for the whole three periods."
Goethel scored the game's first goal at the 7:35 mark of the first period. It was the first goal of a four-goal game for Goethel. Santjer netted a goal at the 13:36 mark of the first period to tie it up at 1-1. Goethel scored her second goal 50 seconds into the second period and Gould tied up the game with a goal 4½ minutes into the second period. Huron's Jordan Miller broke the tie with a goal right before the end of the second period.
The flurry of goals by both teams ensued in the third period.
"The experience of playing together as a team will overcome those little setbacks," Weinmeister said.
Aberdeen (0-1) will host Watertown next Saturday and Sunday at the Odde Ice Center. Saturday's game starts at 11 a.m., while Sunday's game begins at 1 p.m. Aberdeen and Watertown scrimmaged each other last week. The scrimmaged resulted in a 4-4 tie.
"We are going to take some of the things we learned from today and work on them this week and hopefully be ready for them next weekend," Weinmeister said.
