It was business as usual for Macy Heinz and her Ipswich teammates Monday in Webster.

The Ipswich freshman outran the field to capure the girls' individual title at the Webster Invitational cross country meet. Ipswich athletes dominated the front of the girls' field. Three of the top five runners were Tigers, as Tori Moore came in second and Taylor Locken was third. In the boys' race, Jayden Waldner of James Valley Christian crossed the finish line ahead of the pack. No team scores were kept at the event.

Aberdeen Christian and Aberdeen Roncalli were part of the field, which included schools from South and North Dakota as well as Minnesota, for a total of 157 varsity runners and nearly 300 runners overall. On the boys' side, Aberdeen Christian fared well, placing three runners in the top ten. Coach Matt Scott was pleased with how his runners performed, with Isaac Ayers placing third, Seth Lundeen seventh and Tucker Iwerks 10th.

"That is a season's best for Isaac and his best-ever time," said Scott. "He started out conservative and by the mile marker, was in the top five, and started to progress from there."

Scott noted that at one point, those three runners were all in one "nice little group." The goal is to get the rest of the Christian runners in that group as well, he said.

"We're still kind of working on packing them together as a team," Scott said.

Ellene LaCroix had a nice race for the Knights, the coach said.

"She stepped it up and had a PR by two and a half minutes," Scott said. "That was very nice for her."

The Roncalli boys were led by Daniel Holmstrom and Will Geyer, who placed 11th and 17th, respectively. Roncalli coach Mark Stone said Holmstrom had a great day, and the team as a whole improved from last week at Redfield.

"That was one of Daniel's best races ever," Stone said. "Actually, those two boys ran better today and all the rest of the guys did, too. For whatever reason, we ran better today than in Redfield."

The Cavaliers also had two girls in the top 20, Isabel Litzen (6th) and seventh-grader Jianna Gellhaus (20th). Stone said Roncalli is showing improvement as the season has gone on.

"We are working hard to raise our milage target every week," Stone said. "I was pleased again today. We are making progress each week."

Both Roncalli and Christian will compete in the Ipswich Invitational on Saturday.
