TOPEKA, Kan. -- Northern State women's soccer ushered in the 2013 season with five newcomers in the starting lineup and an immediate impact in the opening box score.

Pierre native and freshman Anna Bondy scored in the 23rd minute of the first half and the NSU defense fended off 12 total shots by the host Washburn Ichabods to claim a 1-0 win to open the season.

"It was a good win," said NSU head coach Steve Kehm. "We started five new kids and they all did their job and the kids who came in behind them did just as well."

Bondy had three of NSU's six total shots, putting two on frame. Her first career goal was an unassisted tally and came from 10 yards out, after winning the ball near midfield.

Sophomore Brittany Tietz, who spent her freshman season at Bemidji State, got the start in goal and recorded seven total saves to earn her first win as a Wolf.

"The back line did an excellent job tonight," said Kehm. "They had a couple early mistakes in the first five minutes that created some dangerous chances for Washburn, but then they buttoned it up and probably gave them two more quality chances in the last 85 minutes of the game."

NSU remains on the road to face Northwest Missouri State on Sunday in a 2 p.m. kickoff in Maryville, Mo.

First Period: 1, NSU, Anna Bondy, 22:27.

Second Period: None.

Goalies: NSU, Tietz (12 shots, 7 saves); WU, Tori Fuglister (6 shots, 2 saves).
