The Aberdeen Smittys, who were playing in their fifth game in four days, dropped a doubleheader to Mitchell.

The visitors from Mitchell won 8-2 and 8-3 on Wednesday in an American Legion doubleheader at Fossum Field. Mitchell swept a doubleheader from Aberdeen earlier in the season.

The difference between the two teams was marginal. The Smittys committed six errors in the field to five by Mitchell.

"It was just being consistent in the field a little bit," said Smittys coach Justin Downes. "We matched them pretty well. We just needed to string more hits together. When they made a mistake, we didn't capitalize on it."

Mitchell blew the first game open with three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Aberdeen managed just single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.

Michael Sadler threw a complete game and picked up the win for Mitchell. Jared Schmidt led the visitors with three hits. Jacob Rice and Matt Larson added two hits each.

Aberdeen's offense received triples from Lucas Lorenz and Dalton Cox, who both finished with two hits. Zach Schaefbauer smacked three hits for the home team.

"We didn't have much offense tonight (Wednesday)," said Downes. "Both their pitchers were pretty impressive on the mound. They threw strikes and had good command of all their pitches. That first pitcher had four solid pitches he threw for strikes."

In the nightcap, Mitchell scored runs in the first four innings and led 8-0. The Smittys scored all three of their runs in the seventh and final inning. Rice paced Mitchell with three hits.

John Frisco and Zach Lundquist supplied Aberdeen with two hits each. A pair of Aberdeen Smittys JV Legion players pitched the sixth and seventh innings in relief. Grayson Neuharth and David Sangster didn't give up any runs in the final two innings.

"Those guys have been playing well for the junior Legion team and we wanted to give them a look. It was good to have them on the bench. They had a little break in their schedule and that saves our pitchers for region games coming up," said Downes.

The Aberdeen Smittys, with a 16-20 overall record, play at Mandan, N.D., on Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader.
