Spencer, 37, had originally planned to compete in the Pure Stock division, but that idea took a back seat to the future.
"I had bought a Pure Stock car and stored it at a friend's house," Spencer said. "He happens to buy and sell race cars. When I went to pick mine up, I traded my Pure Stock for a Street Stock. That was probably two months before the start of the season."
Spencer, a rookie this season, has competed a couple of times at Brown County Speedway. He has definitely noticed a difference from watching in the stands to being the pilot of a race car.
"How small the race track is when you're inside the car, and how much easier it is to coach up in the stands," Spencer said.
Spencer's car bears the number 127, which carries a story behind it.
"I wanted to put 12-7, but you can't put a hyphen in the number," he said. "It's actually my mom's birthday (Dec. 7)."
His parents "absolutely and totally" supported his decision to enter auto racing and come from their home at Pickerel Lake to watch him in action.
Growing up, Spencer took in the races at Brown County Speedway and followed local drivers.
"Al Nordstrom and guys of that era, the early and mid 80s," Spencer said. "I think just being a little kid and watching them drive their cars the way they did was exciting for me."
A driver needs a lot of people he can depend on, and Spencer is no different.
"I have guys that help me pretty regularly. I can call them anytime and ask them questions," Spencer said, citing Jeromy and Casey Thorstenson and Chris Feiock. "I've known them for 35-plus years. We go way back."
Spencer also appreciates his stepbrother Tyler Smith and neighbor Ted Misslitz for their help in getting things in order.
"They help me every Friday and all through the week," he said.
Being around fellow drivers on race nights has been a highlight for Spencer, who soaks up as much information as possible.
"I have enjoyed the pit atmosphere, talking to other drivers and getting their feedback on how they set up their cars," Spencer said. "I am learning as I go and getting advice from everyone."
Though he has just a couple of races under his seat belt, Spencer has enjoyed his experiences and is looking forward to many more circuits around the oval.
"I think it's probably one of the most pure, fun events that a guy could ever do in his life," Spencer said. "There's nothing like it anywhere."
