Ellendale, Oakes win N.D. district volleyball titles

 ELLENDALE, N.D. - Host Ellendale won the North Dakota District 5B Girls' Volleyball Tournament Monday to advance to the regional.

 The Cardinals won the title by defeating LaMoure 3-2: 25-20, 25-19, 25-27, 9-25 and 15-8. LaMoure will host the Region 3B tourney Nov. 5-8 and will advance as well as Edgeley-Kulm and Pingree/Buchanan-Kensal as the top four teams from District 5B will play the top four team from District 6B in the regional.

 In the title match, Lucinda Stoppleworth got 26 kills for Ellendale while Shayna Mertz had 9 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks. Dacey Fuller added 22 assists and 3 aces.

 Ellendale placed three players on the all-district team: Stoppleworth, Fuller and Madilyn Bommersbach.

Serving: LaMoure 6 aces (Courtney Carson 3, Megan Good 2, Andrea Watkins 1); Ellendale 9 aces (Dacey Fuller 3, Shayna Mertz 3).

Hitting: LaMoure 45 kills (Carson 17, Watkins 8, Kennedy Witt 7); Ellendale 49 kills (Lucinda Stoppleworth 26, Mertz 9).

Setting: LaMoure 45 assists (Good 41); Ellendale 46 assists (Fuller 22, Rachel Herman 22).

Blocks: Ellendale (Mertz 3, Lucinda Stoppleworth 2).
