Yankton graduate and South Dakota State pitcher Layne Somsen was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday.

The right-handed pitcher was taken in the 22nd round by the Reds and is the 675th overall pick in the draft. The former Aberdeen resident is the first SDSU player from South Dakota to ever be taken in the draft.

Somsen was named the Summit League Pitcher of the Year this past season, going 4-5 with a 1.87 ERA and 91 strikeouts. He helped lead SDSU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance, picked up the save in its Summit League championship win over North Dakota State, and tossed seven innings of one-hit baseball against Oregon in its tournament opener.

Somsen is the second South Dakotan drafted this year. Rapid City's Sam Wolff was taken in the 6th round by the Texas Rangers on Friday. It is the third time that Wolff has been drafted. Wolff started out at the University of San Diego, transferred to College of Southern Nevada, a junior college, then played his final two years at New Mexico. The right-handed pitcher was previously picked in 2009 by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 42nd round, and the Boston Red Sox in the 47th round during the 2011 draft.

North Dakota State right-handed pitcher John Straka was drafted by the Rangers in 32nd round, while Augustana College right-handed pitcher Jordan Milbrath was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 35th round.
