An application cooperative agreement between Aberdeen Roncalli High School and Aberdeen Central High School that would combine the wrestling programs will be sent to the South Dakota High School Activities Association for approval.
The board voted 6-1 to approve going ahead with the co-op. If approved by the activities association, the school will take on current Roncalli wrestling head coach Justin Briese as an assistant coach.
"It's necessary to keep the connection," Aberdeen Central Athletic Director Gene Brownell told the board. "It just makes the future of the co-op much more viable if we have a connection with a person in the school."
Brownell noted that, unlike other sports Roncalli and Central have cooperative agreements in, the wrestling program is one fully operated by Roncalli right now.
"It's not an unusual situation when two school come together with established programs," Brownell said.
There will be no additional financial contribution from Roncalli, Brownell said.
