SIOUX FALLS -- Three Aberdeen Central singles players will contend for fifth place and one more will play in the consolation championship match. All of Aberdeen Roncalli's singles and doubles players were eliminated during Thursday's and Friday's competition.

The team race is still up for grabs at the state boys' tennis tournament. After play on Friday, Watertown has a slim lead with 527 points to 506 for Rapid City Stevens in second. Sioux Falls O'Gorman sits third with 489 points.

Watertown has players in championship matches at singles flights one, two and three. Plus, the Arrows have teams in the semifinals in all three flights of doubles.

Aberdeen Central is seventh with 234 points and Aberdeen Roncalli concludes the tournament with 109 points, which is currently in 16th place.

The following is a capsule look at Central's and Roncalli's matches on the second day.

  •  Flight 1 Singles: Central -- Aaron Lorenz lost 10-3 to Luke Rockne of Yankton in the consolation quarterfinals. Roncalli -- Adam Goetz lost to Jacob Cersosimo of Mitchell 10-4 in the consolation quarterfinals.
  •  Flight 2 Singles: Central -- Joey Crompton beat Ben Jensen of Yankton 10-5 in the consolation quarterfinals and Jacob Leighton of Madison 10-6 in the consolation semifinals. Crompton will play Brendan Amiotte of St. Thomas More in the consolation championship. Roncalli -- Kyle Martin lost 10-7 to Leighton in the consolation quarterfinals.
  •  Flight 3 Singles: Central -- Adam Zimmerman defeated Andrew Crawford of Brookings 10-1 in the consolation round, but lost 11-9 to John Robidoux of Rapid City Central in the consolation quarterfinals. Roncalli -- Jacob Gellhaus lost 6-2, 6-2 to Sam Heckmann of Sioux Falls O'Gorman, the number-one seed, in the quarterfinals and lost 10-2 to Kanin Nelson of Mitchell.
  •  Flight 4 Singles: Central -- Dillon Prissel lost to Brent Heflin of Sioux Falls Lincoln 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, but defeated Mitchell Hanson of Pierre to advance to the fifth-place match. Roncalli -- Alex Bellefeuille lost to Alex Cantine of Milbank 11-10 (2) in the consolation quarterfinals.
  •  Flight 5 Singles: Central -- Alex Grandbois beat Ethan Elbers of Sioux Falls Washington 10-5 to advance to the fifth-place match. Roncalli -- Keaton Deiter lost 10-1 to Blake Meyer of Huron in the consolation quarterfinals.
  •  Flight 6 Singles: Central -- Jesse Margolies beat Patrick Bollinger of Pierre 10-5 to advance to the fifth place match. Roncalli -- Isaiah Vilhauer beat Tyler Sterett of Huron 11-9 in the quarterfinals, but lost 11-9 to Michael Robidoux of Rapid City Central in a semifinal.
  •  "In the first match, he won. He was down 8 to 3 or 8 to 4 and came back," said Roncalli boys' tennis coach Jessie Daw. "In the match he lost, it was just the opposite. He was up 8 to 3 and the other kid started making shots."
  •  Flight 1 Doubles: Roncalli's Goetz and Gellhaus defeated Central's Lorenz and Crompton 11-10 (7) in the consolation quarterfinals. The Roncalli twosome lost to a Mitchell team in the consolation semifinals.
  •  Lorenz is a senior and played his last high school match.
  •  "It would have been nice to keep Aaron's career going a little bit longer," said Central boys' tennis coach Trent Kurtz. "It was close the whole time."
  •  "Adam and Jacob had lost to Central in the dual earlier this year," said Daw. "We trailed pretty much every change over, but came up with big shots when we needed them and pulled out a win."
  •  Flight 2 Doubles: Central -- Zimmerman and Grandbois lost 6-2, 6-3 to a Lincoln team. Roncalli -- Martin and Parker Monson beat at St. Thomas More squad 10-6 and a Vermillion team 10-7. The Cavaliers lost in the consolation semifinals 10-6 to a Madison team.
  •  Flight 3 Doubles: Central -- Prissel and Margolies lost to a Rapid City Stevens team 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Roncalli -- Bellefeuille and Deiter were eliminated on Thursday.

Prissel, Grandbois and Margolies of Central will all play for fifth place today in singles flights four through six, respectively. Crompton will play in the consolation championship at flight-two singles. Prissel, Grandbois and Margolies all lost a match in the championship round, but picked up a win to advance to the fifth-place match.

"We knew the matches today (Friday) were really tough," said Kurtz. "It was nice to see those three bounce back after they got beat. By winning that second match, they get a place in the awards ceremony and all-state recognition. They'll be on the podium (Saturday). If Joey wins, he'll be up there, too. When you lose at state, it's a heartbreak. It's hard to bounce back and get a win."

None of the Golden Eagle players going for fifth place have played in the championship round and all are underclassmen.

"It will be a good experience for them. This is Jesse's first state tournament. It's good pressure for them. We talked to them after their matches and told them they need to learn how to win tight matches and tight points. You can't practice that. It's a learning experience," Kurtz said.

All of the Roncalli singles and doubles players were eliminated. One of the Cavaliers' seniors, Martin, picked up two doubles wins on Friday.

"Kyle did a good job in both singles and doubles. For a senior, it's always nice to get some wins and make your way through the draw," said Daw.

The tournament will conclude today with all matches at Sioux Falls. The doubles semifinals will begin at 8 a.m. In addition to a team champion, individual champions will be crowned in six flights of singles and three of doubles.

"The season has been tough in terms of the weather," said Daw. "We came and competed hard. We have to focus on things we have control over. Jacob was still in the main draw (Friday). The Sioux Falls kid was undefeated, but Jacob hit the ball well and there were a lot of good points. Hopefully, he can use that match as a stepping stone to take his game to the next level."

Team Points after Friday's Play: Watertown 527, Rapid City Stevens 506, Sioux Falls O'Gorman 489, Sioux Falls Lincoln 444, Mitchell 359, Pierre 303, Aberdeen Central 234, Sioux Falls Washington 211, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 209, Rapid City Central 207, Brandon Valley 201, Madison 177, St. Thomas More 141, Yankton 139, Huron 129, Aberdeen Roncalli 109, Brookings 60, Milbank 45, Vermillion 22, Spearfish 8.
