PIERRE - Four Aberdeen Central girls' golfers posted scores in the 80s to boost the Golden Eagles to a second place finish at the Pierre Invitational.

The host team from Pierre carded a 308 on Friday at Hillsview Golf Course, followed by Aberdeen Central with a 327. Rapid City Stevens was third at 344. Mobridge-Pollock finished ninth in the 11-team meet.

The medalist was Pierre's Hallie Getz who shot a school record of 68 for 18 holes. Her score was three-under par.

Four Central golfers earned medals for top 15 finishes. Amanda Tobin topped the Golden Eagles with an 80 followed by Kayla Krueger with an 81, Brianna Kuckelburg at 82 and Ashley Rook at 84. Sydney Wirebaugh turned in a score of 100 for Central.

"The girls played really well and posted some really good scores up and down the lineup," said Kurt Drube, Central girls' golf assistant coach. "Pierre has a really good squad and should be one of the favorites at state. Our girls finished second in a field with nine Double-A schools and that is a good day."

After the Eastern South Dakota Conference Meet earlier in the month, the Golden Eagles decided to shore up their short games.

"We realized our short games needed to be improved upon, our chipping and putting. The season has been so short and that touch or feel of the game is what you lost first and it takes the longest to get back. Our practices have been spent chipping and putting. A lot of them were able to save strokes today after working on the short game," said Drube.

Aberdeen Central hosts the Hub City Invitational on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. at Lee Park Golf Course. That is followed by the State AA Meet May 20-12 at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club in Yankton.

"Hillcrest is an older course and a little more difficult," said Drube. "It has big trees, narrow fairways and the grass in the rough is thick."
