One thing you can count on with South Dakota high school football -- the unique.
Tuesday's first round of the playoffs were no exception:
- Herreid-Selby Area's playoff win was career victory 100 for coach Jeff Kosters.
- Kadoka scored 30 fourth-quarter points and Faith six in Faith's 52-44 win.
- Brody Boes caught three TD passes, including a 59-yard catch with 50 seconds to play, to push Gregory past two-time defending State 9AA champion Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan 36-34. After that, Boes intercepted a pass to seal the win. Teammate Jaden Bartling threw four touchdown passes, had a 79-yard TD run and had 193 rushing and 193 yards passing. With 85 seconds left, BEE's Jace Connor scored to give his team a 34-30 lead.
- Three Faulkton players had more than 100 yards of offense in their team's 56-20 win over Sully Buttes: Kurt Beidler passed for 184 yards and three TDs, Williams Edgar had 120 yards rushing and two TDs, and Darin Wieseler had 110 yards rushing. Sully Buttes got 172 yards passing from freshman Scott Senftner and 117 yards receiving from freshman Cody Nelson.
- Howard's three-headed standout rushing attack overwhelmed Elkton/Lake Benton 51-23: Luke Loudenburg (23 carries, 239 yards, two TDs), Cole Potter (nine carries, 206 yards, four TDs) and Evan Donahue (nine carries, 63 yards, one TD).
- Cody Bunger of Canistota had a hand in 208 yards total offense and five TDs in his team's 33rd straight win -- 54-0 over Hanson.
Close games
- Wilmot teammates Chase Bonson scored four TDs and Austin Hulscher was 12 for 12 passing for 238 yards and three TDs in their team's 40-34 win over Irene-Wakonda. Wilmot, which got 22 tackles from Alex Goodhart, led 32-20 after three quarters. In the final quarter, Dustin Livingston scored back-to-back TDs, the last giving IW a 34-32 lead with about five minutes left in the game. However, Wilmot retook the lead for good with a TD (50-yard pass from Hulscher to Landon Hammer) and conversion.
- Clark/Willow Lake got 185 yards rushing from Lane Hovde and 152 yards passing from Tyson Jenkins in its 41-34 win over Tri-State, which got 194 yards passing and four TDs from Dylan Lick. Torrey Kolden scored the winning TD on a 11-yard pass from Jenkins along with Jacob Weisbrod's PAT kick with 2:23 left in the game.
- Lincoln Swenson of Deuel passed and rushed for 244 yards (122 each) and had a hand in three TDs in his team's 30-23 win over Webster. Trevor Cassels scored the winning TD with 34 seconds left on a two-yard pass from Swenson with Lance Eide getting the conversion on a pass from Swenson.
- Andrew Reiff of Dakota Valley scored in overtime on a nine-yard pass from Aaron Likness as the Panthers defeated Tea 40-37. Tea tied the game at 34 with 73 seconds to play in regulation on a nine-yard TD pass from Taylor Roemen to Adam Waterman and Cooper Hansen's PAT kick. DV missed a field goal at the end of regulation, and Hansen kicked a 27-yard field goal for Tea in overtime. Dakota Valley defeated Tea 20-19 on Oct. 18 in the regular-season finale.
- Jesse Thuringer scored on a 2-yard run with about four minutes to play to give Parkston a 21-14 win over Wagner. Teammate Henry Wegehaupt then intercepted a pass to end a Wagner drive.
- Dell Rapids scored 28 points in less than eight minutes in its 57-22 win over Milbank. At that point, Dell Rapids had outscored its opponents 100-0 in the last nine quarters it had played. On Oct. 18, Dell Rapids beat Milbank 20-0.
Big numbers
- Brian Sumption of Leola-Frederick scored six TDs and rushed for 248 yards in his team's 53-6 win over Miller.
- Potter County had 557 yards of offense -- 400 rushing -- in its 54-14 win over Lemmon-McIntosh.
- Harrisburg quarterback Andrew McCuen threw for 235 yards and four TDs in his team's 63-29 win over Lennox.
- Brookings quarterback Kaleb Vig rushed for 114 yards, passed for 194 yards and had a hand in three TDs in his team's 22-6 win over Rapid City Central, which got 294 yards passing from Asher Pikula.
- Kyle Bertram of Winner rushed for 191 yards in his team's 51-6 win over Bon Homme.
- Lane Weber of Arlington rushed for 202 yards and four TDs in his team's 34-27 win over Hamlin, who got 254 yards passing from Brody Grantham.
- Sam Pond of Waverly-South Shore had a hand in six TDs in his team's 56-28 win over Dell Rapids St. Mary. Former Eureka-Bowdle quarterback Steven Hilgemann is the WSS coach.
- Jack Huether of Viborg-Hurley passed for 255 yards and had a hand in five TDs in his team's 64-14 win over Hurley.
- Brandon Kocmich of Avon rushed for 193 yards and five TDs in his team's 60-20 win over Centerville.
- Cole Chaplin of Hitchcock-Tulare rushed for 202 yards and three TDs in his team's 30-0 win over Rapid City Christian.
- Ryan Knutson of Deubook rushed for 192 yards and five TDs in his team's 55-0 win over Ipswich/Edmunds Central.
