Aggressive play at the net helped Aberdeen Central to a 7-2 high school boys' tennis victory over Sioux Washington on Monday.

The Golden Eagles also faced Sioux Falls Lincoln, dropping an 8-

1 decision to the Patriots.

The dual with Washington featured a lot of close matches, which the Golden Eagles were able to win. Central coach Trent Kurtz knew his team would be in for a battle against the Warriors.

"They were missing a couple of kids, but we were expecting a pretty tight dual," Kurtz said.

Joey Crompton, at number two singles, and the doubles duo of Adam Zimmerman and Alex Grandbois had matches which went to super-tiebreakers and each match went in Central's favor.

"Joey Crompton had a huge (singles) win," Kurtz said. "That kid (Elliot Hartwig) had lost twice all year. It was by far the best match Joey has played this season."

Kurtz also noted that Jesse Margolies beat two very good players on the day, Cole Benson of Washington and Matt Christopherson of Lincoln. Margolies had the lone Central win in the dual with Lincoln.

Central's strategy of being aggressive paid off well against the Warriors, Kurtz said.

"We were really good about attacking the net and finishing points off quick, and our doubles play has been getting better in the last week or two," Kurtz said.

Lincoln made short work of the Golden Eagles and Kurtz gave credit to the Patriots for having a solid squad.

"They are good, one of the teams that have a legitimate shot to win a state title," Kurtz said. "I was hoping we could pick up a couple more wins. We had a couple of chances."

Next up for Central is a visit to Watertown today to face the Arrows at 11 a.m. and Madison at 1:30 p.m.
