Hanson, Young named Mr., Miss Basketball

Pierre's Zach Hanson and Mitchell's Kerri Young were named South Dakota's Mr. and Miss Basketball on Sunday.

 Hanson, a 6-foot-9 forward, is Pierre's first Mr. Basketball since Troy Schaefer was the co-winner with Luther Hippe of Sioux Falls Washington in 1983. Young, a 6-foot guard/forward, is Mitchell's first-ever Miss Basketball. Hanson and Young were both named the South Dakota Gatorade Players of the Year earlier this year.

 Hanson, a Creighton recruit, led the Governors to the State AA boys' basketball championship this season. Hanson's mother Jane (Konz) Hanson played college basketball for Northern State.

 Young, a South Dakota State recruit, led the Kernels to the State AA girls' basketball championship last season. Mitchell finished second at the state tournament this past season.

 The finalists for Mr. Basketball were: NSU recruit Tanner Heiser of Watertown, Adam Hofer of James Valley Christian, Brock Zeller of Elk Point-Jefferson, Dell Rapids teammates Bryce Koch and Cole Langer, Chase Marso of Brandon Valley, Jordan Baker of Sioux Falls Christian, Lane Severyn of Pierre, Skyler Flatten of Clark/Willow Lake, Tyler Howard of Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Wyatt Krogman of White River.

 The finalists for Miss. Basketball were: Samantha Knecht of Aberdeen Central, Northern State volleyball recruit Rachel Rogers of Warner, Summit twin sisters Logan and Presley O'Farrell, Sioux Falls Lincoln teammates Cera Ledbetter and Darby Hugunin, Allison Koehn of Brandon Valley, Chynna Stevens of Clark/Willow Lake, Emma Hanson of Sioux Falls Washington, Erica Herrold of Parkston, Kieran O'Malley of Centerville and Taylor Trohkimoinen of Newell.
