Northern State split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader in its final games of the season on Saturday.
The Wolves defeated Minnesota-Duluth 5-4 in the first game and then dropped the second game of the twin bill 11-9 at Fossum Field. Northern State built a 2-0 lead after the third inning and then went ahead 4-2 after the fourth inning. The Wolves then pushed the score to 5-2 in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but could not get another run across to knot up the score at 5-all.
Nathan Nietfeld picked up the win for Northern State. He finished with six strikeouts en route to the win. Brent Lawrence drove in three runs for the Wolves, while Trevor Sporrer and Casey Bohms both drove in a run. Cameron Lehner went 3-for-4 from the plate, while Sporrer went 2-for-2. Lehner, Robbie Rocamora, Buddy Traxler and Clayton Nutting all had doubles.
The Wolves out-hit the Bulldogs 12-8 in game two. However, Duluth scored seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to eke out the two-run win. Rocamora drove in three runs and went 2-for-5 at the plate. Derek Tymesen plated two runs. Lawrence, Nutting and Bohms also drove in a run apiece.
Northern State finishes it season 15-27 overall and 8-20 in the conference.
