The 24-team North American Hockey League named 12 players its 2012-13 all-rookie teams on Wednesday.

Two were from Aberdeen. Wings forward Peter Krieger made the first team, while teammate defender Jake Horton made the second team.

NAHL players who are playing in their first year of junior hockey, or having played less than 10 NAHL regular-season games entering the season, are considered rookies.

Also making the first team were Central Division players Jay Dickman of Austin and Nate Repensky of Bismarck.

Friend of Aberdeen

The Sahli family has long been a friend to Aberdeen sports.

Dennis Sahli of Aberdeen was no exception. He died Saturday at age 67.

His longtime morning coffee buddy and Roncalli teacher-coach Terry Dosch said Dennis worked the sidelines on the football chain gang for Northern State home football games for 43 years starting in 1970.

"It was something that he loved to do," Dosch said. "He always had stories about things that happened during games. He also was a tireless volunteer who, through the years, did a great deal to support Roncalli and followed all of our teams. His type of service and personality are uncommon."

The NSU football sidelines won't be the same.

Area winner

Former James Valley Christian standout Samantha Kleinsasser earned a prestigious honor as she was named the women's NAIA national winner of the Emil S. Liston award. Based on academics and basketball, it is given to the top junior in the NAIA.

Kleinsasser led Northwestern College to the national semifinals this past season. She was an honorable-mention All-American and has a 4.0 grade-point average as a nursing and pre-medicine major at the college in Orange City, Iowa.

The NAIA web site lists Jim Kampen of Corona and Northern State as the men's winner of this award in 1962.

South Dakota scores

Here is a list of the 25 Best Pheasant Hunting Towns in America from Pheasants Forever someone sent me. This list also includes multiple quail species, prairie grouse and forest birds:

  •    1. Pierre.
  •    2. Lewistown, Mon.
  •    3. Hettinger, N.D.
  •    4. Huron.
  •    5. Valentine, Neb.
  •    13. Eureka.
  •    15. Redfield.

Number 25 is a bit of a surprise - Anchorage, Alaska. Apparently, they have good grouse hunting.
