The Wolves finish the season 19-23 overall and 11-13 in the conference, while the Cougars finish 15-27 on the year and 10-18 in the loop.
NSU won the first game 5-2, but lost the second game 4-3.
The game one win was awarded to NSU ace Kami Smesmo, who allowed only one earned run in seven innings of complete work for the Wolves. Smesmo struck out five in the game while giving up four Cougar hits.
The Wolves scored all five of their runs in the top of the fourth inning. Haley Covais began the Wolves assault with a single to center, quickly followed by Lindsey Hubler who was issued a walk. With runners on second and third, Eryn Yancy singled to the second baseman. Jordin Novak recorded her sixth and seventh RBIs of the year scoring Covais and Yancy off an error committed by the Sioux Falls second baseman. Recording her only hit of the day, Caitlin Moran reached on a single to the centerfielder. Kelsey Gale added to her team leading seven doubles with a shot to right, plating both Moran and Novak on the play. Morgan Schultz took a piece of the double action, connecting with a pitch to left and bringing Gale around to score.
Five Wolves recorded hits on the day for Northern, with Covais leading the attack going 2-for-2 from the plate.
A ten inning game resulted in pitching performances from both Smesmo and senior Stephanie Horkey who allowed eight hits and three earned runs in four innings of work. The Wolves plated runs in both the third and fifth innings, losing in the bottom of the tenth off a walk off home run given up by Smesmo.
Yancy singled to left in the top of the third, bringing in Robling who had reached base on a fielder's choice. Both Macey Engel and Moran connected for singles up the middle. The other two Northern runs came in the top of the fifth, started by Moran who reached first on a slap single to the third baseman. Robling smashed the teams third double of the day to right, scoring Moran. For the third run of the game for the Wolves, Engel notched her first sacrifice fly of the year, scoring the tagging Robling at third.
Northern recorded 15 team hits on the day, scoring a total of eight runs. Engel lead the team with an RBI and a .500 average from plate. Both Moran and Robling were able to notch hits in their final weekend of softball in a Wolf uniform, while Horkey recorded the last start of her career.
NSU finishes the year in 11th place in the conference standings, just one spot short of making the conference tournament for the second year straight.
