A team known for its defense cranked up its offense to start the playoffs at Swisher Field Tuesday night.
Aberdeen Roncalli, which had not allowed a point at home all season, piled up points and yards in mass quantities on the way to a 64-19 win over Mobridge-Pollock during a first round Class 11B football game. The offensive barrage established a new school record for points in a game, eclipsing the old mark of 61 set in 2010.
The Cavaliers racked up 408 yards from scrimmage in the first half alone on the way to a 50-13 intermission advantage.
"The offensive line was doing a great job of coming off the ball," said Roncalli back Dalton Cox, "and doing a great job of protecting Zach (Lundquist) so he had time to throw."
The result was one touchdown after another for the Cavaliers.
The final numbers for Roncalli's starters were staggering, considering they only played for half the game:
Lucas Lorenz rushed for 115 yards on 12 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns.
Matt Swallow rushed for 51 yards and three touchdowns, and had 64 yards receiving and another TD.
Cox finished with 59 yards rushing and a touchdown, and also had 92 yards receiving and another TD.
"All you have to do is block your guy a certain way," said Roncalli offensive tackle Zach Andera. "You never know if Swallow, Lucas or Cox is going to break one."
Cox, known for his powerful running style, turned in an agile wide receiver, making several stunning catches including one where he was completely horizontal to the field.
"That layout, that was pretty. What can you say?" said Roncalli coach Terry Dosch. "It's really good to see kids give that kind of effort."
Lundquist found himself at the middle of that offensive attack and finished with 164 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns.
Roncalli also received touchdowns from reserves Anthony Andera and Greg Zens in the second half.
The Cavaliers needed a few more points than usual because their defense was unable to pitch another shutout.
Austin Borah put the Tigers on the board with a 75-yard kickoff return for a score before Cody Schaefbauer hauled in a pass from Alex Greger and ran 66 yards for another TD. Greger also found Mason Keller for a 12-yard scoring strike.
"Defensively, that was without a doubt one of our more lackluster efforts, I think," Dosch said. "We just have to play better."
Andera was around the ball all night. The junior recovered two fumbles, blocked a punt and also blocked an extra-point attempt.
"Tyson (Mitzel) forced one of the fumbles," Andera pointed out. "I just jumped on it. That's all I had to do."
When asked about his ability to get a hand on those kicks, Andera responded, "It's just getting a good jump off the ball and then taking a good angle and staying low."
Roncalli improved to 9-0 on the season and now advances to the quarterfinals.
"The first goal is to move on," Cox said, "but we definitely have some things to work out on the defensive side."
The Cavaliers will host Parkston (7-2) on Monday at Swisher Field.
"Physical football team, tough kids, hard-nosed," Dosch said of the Trojans. "We'll have our hands full, I'm sure."
Before then, Dosch said the Cavaliers have some work to do after what he saw on Tuesday night.
"We did not do some of the little things as well as what I like," Dosch said. "We just have to work hard in practice this week. We have to have great focus, great attention to detail and be ready for Monday."
